Alamo Car Rental Vancouver Canada Place

Recommended Posts

Just been looking at some alternatives to sitting at Vancouver Airport for a 5PM flight after our Alaska Cruise in 2013. Alamo offers an "on site" car rental for departing cruise ship passengers only - does anyone have any experience with this?

We might want to drive to Seattle and pick up an evening flight just to do something other than sitting around an airport all daylong.

Any info much appreciated!

Yes, I have rented cars and driven Vancouver/Seattle many times, including again this year. You do have to allow at least 4 hours for the drive, as Vancouver is slow, all stop and go driving, and border lines can be significant.

I have rented from Alamo, National, Budget and Avis one way rentals, there is also Hertz. I go with the cheapest, which was Avis this year.

We have used Alamo/Avis/Hertz for one way rentals between Vancouver-Seattle many many times. Its a beautiful 3-4 hour drive depending on border delays.

During Alaska season they are always shuttling cars between the 2 cities.

We have never paid a drop charge and its always been very reasonable.

But we have always set it up ahead of time to avoid the drop fee which can be hefty. ;)

Depending on the time there is also buses that leave from the train terminal that will take you to downtown Seattle. Get out of that station walk around the block and catch the train to the airport when you are ready. Check the Amtrak site for information on times. Much cheaper than a car rental and more relaxing too.

The actual drive time from Vancouver to Seattle is a full 3 hrs and as SEATAC is at the southbound of Seattle you can add a bit to that time. Then you can spend 1 to 2 hours waiting at the border southbound depending upon the day of the week and the time of day. Weekday mornings (other than holiday Mondays) are the fastest....but there is no way that it can be done in 3 hours, plan at least 4 and maybe even 5 hours.
