Silver Sweethearts Posted October 26, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 26, 2012 We were just informed at noon today while docked here in Boston that our itinerary is going to be changed because of Hurricane Sandy. We will not be going to Oak Bluff (Martha's Vineyard) or Charleston, South Carolina. Instead, we will be going east out into the Atlantic to try and go around and avoid the storm. Hopefully, we will be able to dock in Hamilton, Bermuda. That means we may well be at sea for the next several days at least depending on the direction the storm takes. We topped off our fuel tanks this afternoon, and we will be leaving Boston on schedule.
Steve007NY Posted October 26, 2012 #2 Share Posted October 26, 2012 Thanks for the posting, and sorry your itinerary was jumbled. At least on Seabourn, the on board experience is SO wonderful one can enjoy oneself even if one never hit a port! We are scheduled on the Sojourn from FLL on the 1st. Let's hope all is resolved by then, for you and for us!
JaneBP Posted October 26, 2012 #3 Share Posted October 26, 2012 SilverSweethearts, this is OT but I am spending Christmas in Maui. Could I ask you some questions upon your return? No rush. Thanks! janepondatprodigydotnet

marchanxiety Posted October 27, 2012 #6 Share Posted October 27, 2012 We got off the Soujourn a week ago. As the DC area prepares (hysterically) for Sandy, we've been wondering what's going on with the ship. Good luck--hope it's not too rough.
JaneBP Posted October 27, 2012 #7 Share Posted October 27, 2012 Aloha JaneBP: Ask away please!! - Silver Sweethearts Thank you. However, all my questions will be off topic and will no doubt anger the other readers. If you will email me, i can respond off line and ask. Cruisers have been crucified for less on this board. Thank you.

KirkNC Posted October 27, 2012 #9 Share Posted October 27, 2012 Yikes, it is one big storm so hard to get around.
Silver Sweethearts Posted October 27, 2012 Author #10 Share Posted October 27, 2012 We are a few hundred miles out from the eastern seaboard under fair skies and air temperature of 66 degrees. Our speed is 17.5 knots and the apparent wind speed is 44 mph. The Captain expects the seas to increase (it really isn't that rough at all at the moment) as we chug toward Bermuda. Winds in Bermuda are reported to be about 50 mph, and we probably will not land there. We won't be there until tomorrow evening at the earliest. It is supposed to rain tonight too. Crew have told us that about twenty passengers chose to disembark in Boston rather than going on. We are expected to reach Florida on schedule. cwn Posted October 28, 2012 #13 Share Posted October 28, 2012 The Sojourn is having a time with the storms this year...too big storms that circled back toward Scotland caused a change in our Viking crossing and very rough seas in Sept. Hope you are having a good cruise inspite of the weather.
Roxburgh Posted October 28, 2012 #14 Share Posted October 28, 2012 We are sitting in our beach house in Massachusetts waiting for Sandy to arrive. Would have loved to see you come through Buzzards Bay and into the hurricane shelter in New Bedford / Fairhaven :D
Chairsin Posted October 28, 2012 #15 Share Posted October 28, 2012 At least you are on one of the big sisters -- but still I'm sure that is not much consolation. Will be anxious about you until the ship safely reaches Bermuda.
oregon50 Posted October 28, 2012 #16 Share Posted October 28, 2012 At noon, twenty miles from Bermuda and that seems to be about as close as we will get on this trip.
Roxburgh Posted October 28, 2012 #17 Share Posted October 28, 2012 At noon, twenty miles from Bermuda and that seems to be about as close as we will get on this trip. There are some nasty reefs around Bermuda. Probably don't want to get too close in bad weather. And stay out of the triangle :eek:
Silver Sweethearts Posted October 29, 2012 Author #18 Share Posted October 29, 2012 Bermuda was too windy, so we came around the island and are now headed south toward Hispanola. We'll hang a right before there and are due to reach Fort Lauderdale on time Thursday morning. Swells are up to 25 feet, and we are rocking and rolling out here. We may not get any calmer seas for quite a while. Some people are out and about, but it is hard to get around. Rather ironic, but the Rock The Boat party is tonight (inside - not on deck). philipb Posted October 29, 2012 #19 Share Posted October 29, 2012 Thank you for the post Silver Sweethearts. I enjoy sea-days, but preferably in reasonably calm waters! I hope you are enjoying the cruise nevertheless. Many thanks for predicting an on-time arrival in FLL.
Silver Sweethearts Posted October 29, 2012 Author #20 Share Posted October 29, 2012 The Captain just announced that the weather will be decent and the seas may decrease a bit (hooray!!). We are still experiencing fairly good swells and many passengers and crew seem to feel them adversely. Still in all, a good mood prevails and the staff could not be better. Five sea days in a row with these swells is like a mini TA, and not for everyone.
Chairsin Posted October 30, 2012 #21 Share Posted October 30, 2012 As bad as it has been( and its clear you have had a rough time of it) just be glad you were not on the Disney Fantasy which took a beating ! I am sure that Fort Lauderdale will look really good to you by Thursday.
Silver Sweethearts Posted October 30, 2012 Author #22 Share Posted October 30, 2012 We finally turned west toward Fort Lauderdale, and we will be going through the Providence Channel around the Bahamas by tomorrow morning. We had to go as low as 25 degrees to get away from the high swells and wind. Today is much better and it should improve more by tomorrow. Swells do remain but are more intermittent. ailmarsh Posted October 31, 2012 #23 Share Posted October 31, 2012 So glad things are improving for you & all on board Sojourn. We are boarding in Ft L on Thurs. I'm sure those staying on for the next leg will have a few tales to tell! Thanks for the updates. Enjoy the rest of your trip :-) Kind regards Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
dalliowner Posted October 31, 2012 #24 Share Posted October 31, 2012 I am sure the captain and crew will look forward to calmer seas after the last couple of months.
charlielou Posted October 31, 2012 #25 Share Posted October 31, 2012 You are so right, our daughter works in the Spa on the Sojourn and after experiencing a horrendous trip across to Iceland from the UK, and then these last few days, the crew are definitely looking forward to calmer seas when they sail through the Panama Canal and then down the west coast of South America.
