sail7seas Posted January 15, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 15, 2013 I have noticed a few ladies carrying a raffia or high quality very soft, pliant straw hobo sort of handbag on cruises. It is woven tightly, is natural in color but it likely exists in black and other colors....... It's bucket shaped and the woven top of the bag sits comfortably on the shoulder. I wish I could describe it better but really hope someone can figure out what I'm talking about. :o I'd love one of those bags but in high quality. The ones I've noticed have no weight or bulk and would pack a dream, perfectly flat. Any think they can help? TIA.......
Armchairtravelwoman Posted January 15, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 15, 2013 Something like this? http://www.normthompson.com/jump.jsp?itemID=29996&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C7%2C1593%2C1654&iProductID=29996 Or more colorful: http://www.travelsmith.com/the-sak-gypsy-crochet-multi-stripe-bag/lu ggage-bags/bags-wallets/22165?defattrib=&defattribvalue=&listIndex=42[/url] I've purchased cheaper ones at WalMart and at TJMaxx. They hold up pretty well until they start unravelling, so maybe the higher quality ones would help. These are a go-to summer bag for me and also on beach vacations. They do pack like a dream. SeminoleFan Posted January 15, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 15, 2013 Eric Javits makes beautiful, high-end handbags like what you're describing. sail7seas Posted January 15, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted January 15, 2013 Thank you so much. I really appreciate your help. I lilke the body of the 'totes' but am hoping to find the style with the straw sling top that slips over of the shoulder. It's a bucket style/hobo and is continuously woven/knit with decreasing width to make for it to slip over the shoulder. I can't even find a photo of it.... if I could find a photo, I would have found the bag I want. :D Eric Javits was the name I could not think of. Neiman's sells his bags and they are wonderful. If I don't find the one I really want, I will definitely buy the squishee clip...... That's a great, very light weight bag. Thank you for sharing Eric Javits. It was annoying me I couldn't remember his name. Still hunting for my 'perfect' summer travel handbag. :)
jacksmom09 Posted January 16, 2013 #6 Share Posted January 16, 2013 I bought a really cute small cross body type or long shoulder type bag in a natural raffia with colorful beads at Belk last year that was great for cruising!
Armchairtravelwoman Posted January 16, 2013 #7 Share Posted January 16, 2013 Oh, I see what you mean. How about this one? Saw it in a catalog I received yesterday. http://www.garnethill.com/flora-bella-ibiza-raffia-handbag/242717?listIndex=1&searchTerm=26987&listId=SEARCHRESULTS
sail7seas Posted January 16, 2013 Author #8 Share Posted January 16, 2013 That's way closer than the other bags. I like that one but would prefer plain without the woven design. I am book marking that page and if I don't find a plain one, I might seriously consider choosing between that bag and an Eric Javits. THANK you so much for going to the trouble to help me find the perfect (for me :) ) raffia handbag.
SeminoleFan Posted January 16, 2013 #9 Share Posted January 16, 2013 Hi sail7seas-- When you do find and purchase the perfect raffia handbag, please update us! Would love to know what you eventually decide on.
sail7seas Posted January 18, 2013 Author #10 Share Posted January 18, 2013 I found one I like at Hats.com but I don't think it's the high quality I'm looking for. It looks like the raffia might be stiff. http://www.hats.com/search_results.aspx I saw a few Prada bags that look great but are not the style I really want and the prices are steep. Still looking....... :D
Anita Latte Posted January 18, 2013 #11 Share Posted January 18, 2013 I don't know how crafty you are...but I have seen bags like these in person and they are amazing: http://www.myrecycledbags.com/2007/05/18/recycled-plastic-grocery-tote-bag/ Made from grocery store bags, depending on the bags you use, you get a bag that is colored like the bags. I saw one made from Kroger bags which are brown with blue lettering in my area. There are many patterns available online. Making the "plarn" is actually pretty easy. If you are looking for a summer bag that you would be lightweight, this would really work and have that look that you seem to be going for. binkysmom Posted January 18, 2013 #12 Share Posted January 18, 2013 did you see these Eric Javits at Neiman Marcus? http://www.neimanmarcus.com/category.jsp?itemId=cat43381173
royalcruz Posted January 18, 2013 #13 Share Posted January 18, 2013 This one has a leather strap but is otherwise similar to what you are describing, with no pattern in the weave. http://www.tommybahama.com/TBG/Women/Accessories/Totes_and_Handbags/PRD_THW7103/Aptos+Raffia+and+Leather+Tote.jsp
5326jan Posted January 18, 2013 #14 Share Posted January 18, 2013 Have you looked at "The Sak" bags? They have some cute crocheted bags. Not sure that they're rafia, but I've found some rafia/straw bags to be scratchy to carry. The Sak is a much softer material. http://www.thesak.com/view-all-crochet/_/showAll/1/

They were sturdy but lightweight but I'm really looking for the raffia look this time. Thanks for the suggestion. :) I don't know how crafty you are...but I have seen bags like these in person and they are amazing: http://www.myrecycledbags.com/2007/05/18/recycled-plastic-grocery-tote-bag/ Made from grocery store bags, depending on the bags you use, you get a bag that is colored like the bags. That's a great bag. I've seen that one being carried and it's very smooth and soft. No roughness to that raffia. It's pricey but I suspect it's good for a great many summers. That isn't a handbag I'd tire of. Those Eric Javits bags are nice!! Thank you. :) This one has a leather strap but is otherwise similar to what you are describing, with no pattern in the weave.http://www.tommybahama.com/TBG/Women/Accessories/Totes_and_Handbags/PRD_THW7103/Aptos+Raffia+and+Leather+Tote.jsp Good looking bag and I like the body. That's nice summer bag IMO Thanks. :)
