Payment of shipboard account

We like to register a card for our cruise and then later pay an amount off in cash leaving little to pay at the end of our trip...(its just our way) but did notice that their are time limits to pay your last bill that i have not noticed before.

I you want to change the card that you registered first on the cruise you must do it so Cunard can check the cards authorisation...it says 2..3 days. Payment by cash only up to a time the day before disembarcation 11.00am-12.00am.

If your paying by card in full no problem.. If your paying some cash there is a time limit.

Can you buy "On board Credit (OBC)" before you cruise ? Also can you pre-pay your gratuities as well ? If you can buy OBC's you can estimate what expect to spend and buy that amount.

Under no circumstances should you buy OBC With Cunard. If for whatever reason you don't spend it all they confiscate it. Don't do it.

You can add cash to your account while on board though, and this will be returned if you don't use it all. Why anyone would want to I don't know, the system is set up for credit card payments, anything else is hard work.

I learned the hard way on the QE maiden voyage in October, 2010 to be sure and notify your credit card company you are going to be out of the country as I failed to do so and had my credit card declined after 2 days onboard.

Fortunately, I had some cash which I applied to my onboard account so could "buy things".

Don't bother trying to call your credit card company from a pay phone in Funchal (LOL)!

but on board last July I cashed up my casino chips at the end of the last night on board & put the $ on my account at the pursers desk, at say, around midnight. They duly accepted them, amended my account balance to reflect the cash, & I received a new statement overnight with the amount they were now going to charge my card.

I also know you can add cash amounts to your on board account throughout a trip & I've always been given a receipt & an upto date new statement when I've done this. I'm only talking the odd few hundred $ casino winnings now & again - but as other posters have pointed out, stay under your account balance because you won't get it back in either cash or credit card return.

Hi soc1965

As a matter of interest we have been on a couple of ships where accounts can be viewed on the cabin TV, down to detail if each transaction, it was updated virtually as soon as a transaction is made any where on ship obviously linked to the accounts computor system. Does the QM 2 have this facility?

Regards

Norm

  • 2 weeks later...

There are some good tips in this thread. i.e. notify your credit card company you will be traveling. Mine is Chase and they decline the charge each and every time if not notified. I agree with the person who said partially paying your charge card while on board is a lot of work unless maybe some people don't do online banking etc (and they will be traveling a long time) which may not be reliable from distant countries. The lines I saw forming at the purser's desk on the QM2 starting with the day before disembarkation would make me think twice.
