Are you really insured for cruise?

CRUISENSNOOZE

I have posted on this subject on a different thread some time ago.

We are with Prudential and having received the "heads up" about cruise travel we found that they do not automatically cover you and there is an extra charge. There is nothing in the small print that mentions this but they say you are expected to ask!!!!

Always double check with your insurer just to be sure.

We use Insure & Go and I have checked with them that they cover cruises and repatriation, everything. We have 3 medical conditions between us.

We also use Insure and Go because they cover cruises and do not load up the policy for my DH's heart condition.

We have free travel insurance with Nationwide bank, I have checked and we are insured for cruising but thank you I am glad I checked

Just be wary of other exclusions with packaged bank account insurance. Also ensure the policy you have is up to date. Santander changed the free policy, but in a number of cases failed to tell customers, leaving some potentially uninsured. Santander are no longer offering travel insurance with package accounts, they can see mis selling issues ahead.

I phoned the bank after reading this thread and she told me we were covered for up to 10 million, that included being airlifted from sea, only in Europe though.

I have heard abouts things going wrong before, like being covered for an outward flight but not the home journey, you can't be too careful.

Thankfully I have only ever had to use travel insurance once 26 years ago when my dad died when we were on holiday, that experience made me realise I would never travel without it.

I'm glad I resurrected this older post, so thanks for the comments.

I've done a lot of research on this in the last few days and can see that while there is huge medical expenses cover, some policy actualy exclude air rescue.

I found insure and go to be extremely helpful. Their policy wording was not specific about being airlifted so they actually confirmed to me in writing that this was the case. Their extra premium for pre existing condition was just a few pounds.

Interestingly the P&O cover was very clear, but the extra medical cover premium was far too high.

I asked the same question to out travel agent about their own cover. They were very quick to explain that they had air ambulance cover, however she has so far spent 3 days trying to find it in the policy wording!

Hi

I renew our annual policy yesterday, and after reading this thread re asked

the question on cruising, yes we are covered and for any medical expenses

arising, as also penned the question on air lift from ship, yes covered under

medical expenses.:)

The company is Atlas Direct underwriiten by AXA and has a list of 30 plus

exsisting conditions they cover with no additional charge, ie Chloresterol

just paid £78 worldwide inc usa and caribbean for 2 persons under 52.

We had been using a company for around seven years, read all the small print no mention of not covering cruising. Decided to have a look on one of the compare an insurance sites around renewal as they had said that they only covered to a certain age. One of the questions asked was will you be cruising. Made me enquire with my insurance company and they said they did not cover cruises  sure glad we didn't need airlifting on one of our cruises. Now check every time that cruising is covered. Luckily we are with one of the banks which cover it.:)

I'm very surprised Rocket Ron, that you got such an outrageous quote from All Clear. I've used them for several years, now, and always found them to be very reasonable and competitive, especially as they offer specialist cruise policies. I have high blood pressure, kids have serious allergy, and once we insured my mother, who has colostomy, thyroid, high blood pressure, and has had heart valve replacement, and it was still only a couple of hundred quid for the 5 of us (hubby is in perfect health, thank the Lord). Maybe a phone call rather using the online quote system?

I am now LIVID!

My travel agent who told me that P&O now insisted that passengers had adequate cover to be airlifted from a ship if necessary, and then went on to sell me their own insurance, now tells me that it DOES NOT COVER being airlifted after I enquired where it was in the policy wording.

This is clear mis-selling and I am really angry. I'm cooling off on here before I decide how to reply to the agent.

I'm very tempted to name and shame them. They are a large independent agent on the south coast who pride themselves as being cruise specialists. They have a very good local reputation.

Apart from going as high as I can in their organisation to complain I wonder if ABTA or an agents ombudsman would be worth it? I'm probably banging my head against a brick wall.
