Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

I can tell you that wouldn't fly with me. There's no reason that people with outside cabins couldn't go to their cabin last night if they had a flashlight with them (many people pack those, it's pretty common sense. Keeping people hostage on the top deck overnight when there is no good reason for it is a terrible violation of basic human rights. They should have allowed people to go to their cabins where they'd have some privacy, comfort, and far more hygienic facilities.

I thought this, too, although it would be creepy walking around the dark halls, even with a flashlight. But then I thought, how do people get into their cabin if there is no power, since the doors are electronic. ??

I never said the coast guard was lying. The poster was saying I was lying about me saying my father said that there was no toilets available for use. I was simply stating what he said - I would believe him over what Carnival issues in their press release. Just because they say they have some toilets available doesn't mean that passengers can use them. I did not have a chance to tell him that Carnival said they were operational - the other ship must have left and he lost service as I haven't gotten any more messages in a little while. I do not have to prove myself to you or anyone else, I was just trying to help people who also have family aboard since Carnival doesn't seem to be giving up to date DETAILED information. I have no idea how to post a screenshot and choose not to do so.

Please continue posting. Our daughter-in-law is on the ship and we haven't heard anything from her.

They did say all onboard purchases would be refunded other than gift shops and casinos (both of which make sense - except duty free purchases that hadn't been delivered might need to be credited back). Minibars would count, once they can get to cabins. Contents would be warm of course.

I wonder if Carnival is allowing the passengers to freely raid their cabin's mini bar like they did on the Splendor?

I looked up the definition of Triumph on the internet.

tri·umph

/noun

1.

the act, fact, or condition of being victorious or triumphant; victory; conquest. (Hmm, victorious over modern propulsion?)

2.

a significant success or noteworthy achievement; instance or occasion of victory. (Getting everyone eating at the buffet!)

3.

exultation resulting from victory; joy over success. (Joy when the cruisers receive their checks)

5.

a public pageant, spectacle, or the like.

(Well Carnival sure got this one right – what a spectacle!)

Maybe after this ship get repaired Carnival can do another name change thingy. I’m thinking:

Carnival Destiny to Go Hungry

Carnival Bad Dream

Carnival Black Magic

Carnival Fortitude to Stand in Line

Carnival Pride of 1800

Carnival Miracle – Boy We Need One

:D

Does anyone know if the stabilizers are working? I'd be so seasick if not.

Stabilizers are only used when the ship is in motion. Fortunately the Gulf is relatively calm for this time of year. The forecast in that area is 4 to 6 foot seas and about 10-15 kt winds. So it would depend on what gets someone seasick. It is likely just a light sway to the ship. I've seen 10 foot seas common when a front is in an area but none are going to be coming through.

According to Carnival my cruise still leaves in 42 days on the Triumph. I'll make the best of any situation myself unless I was stranded in the water w/ sharks:( but then the upside situation to that is I would be able to number 1 or 2.

As far as the food goes who would want to eat much anyway in this situation, it's got to go somewhere.

Majority of the people on the ship are probably doing much better than most of some posters think they are.

Carnival said they restored the use of toiloets, did not say how many toilets.

Correct.

yes they do - it is called public relations spin

No they don't. Soon enough passengers will be back on shore and I have no doubt there will be confirmation that some toilets were quickly put back in service. You know there will be an army of reporters waiting to meet passengers when they return. And almost as many lawyers handing out business cards reading Call Me!

There's no reason to think that both parties would be right. First of all, we know when the message was received, but not when it was sent. I've had texts get delayed before, and that wasn't when an extra 4,000 people were trying to send messages to family back home.

And when the toilets were working, how did they communicate this? With an intercom system that runs on power? If he was at the other end of the ship from the working toilets, I imagine it would take a while to get the message across. And considering the open decks aren't nearly large enough for that many people, it's probably not easy to get to the other end of the ship and check.

As for Carnival lying, why would they? This is information that would be extremely easy for passengers to call them out on once they got off the ship. No way are the PR people dumb enough to issue a blatant lie like that. The resulting effect would be much worse for them once everyone got off the ship and told the truth, rather than just saying they're still not working right now.

It's entirely plausible for everyone to be right at the moment.

Thanks for sharing the facts from someone actually on board. Sorry you had to be flamed by all the Carnival can do no wrong defenders

Just to clarify, since you seem to be badly mistaken, I am NOT in any way a Carnival defender. Never have been. Nor have I "flamed" anyone.

However, I do not for one minute believe that the statements Carnival has put out regarding restoring some power and getting some of the toilets back to working condition is a lie. Certainly that poster's father may not have a working toilet in his cabin. This does not mean that there are no working toilets on board.

I 100% believe you that your Dad said exactly what he did. He has no reason to lie either, but it is possible that some toilets have been repaired and he has not been told. According to the midday update, teams were supposed to be working on the aft sewage system so hopefully should not be long before toilets become more widely available.

Thanks again for posting.

My wife and 3 of her girlfriends are on the Triumph for a daughters bachorlorette party sailing. My wife was able to call me Sunday night for a few minutes while the Elation was alongside via the Elations cell service.

My wife (Kelli) told me that it was pretty scary during the fire evacuation. A fire on a ship is serious. She said that they were allowed back down into the cabins after a while, but it is so hot that you cannot sleep down there. So they had set up a makeshift tent over deck loungers to sleep in. At the time I spoke to her, there was no toilets. They were using little red bags. And no running water, no lights, except emergency lighting.

She said that it was already pretty miserable. No hot food, and no alocohol being served. There was still ice being served in soft drinks. I guess not melted away yet.None of the shops were open. They were in good spirits, but very pissed off about being held hostage on a broken down cruise ship. They were all supposed to return to work on Tuesday, now that will be impossible. So I guess they will have to use vacation days or go unpaid.

In my opinion, a fire and total loss of power on a ship carrying 4000 people is unexcuseable.

Hey there Willie! Hope things get up and running soon! My office Mgr. at one of my stores was on a Carnival ship last week and met a lady in a hot tub that was on the Triumph a few weeks ago and missed multiple ports due to propultion problems and couldnt keep up to speed. I'm wondering if all engines werent operating properly for a while.......if I remember correctly arent there 4 engines with generators? One engine having an issue shouldnt disable a ship!

No minibars on Triumph. Only suites have a fridge.

Actually, in this case not necessarily correct.

This incident is way too similar to the Splendor. The ships share similar designs, maintenance procedures and presumably operating equipment. At least from outward appearances the root cause of the incident was the same, a fire in the engine area knocking out power distribution (as I noted earlier the odds of all 4 generators failing are fairly high, making the must likely point of failure the distribution system - this is born out by them being able to restore power partially, if all generators were offline this would not be possible.).

Given that two similar instances have now occurred on the same line, it is reasonable to assume there are systemic contributing factors and that this type of incident is more likely to happen on a Carnival ship.

Yikes! 4 to 6 feet is pretty rough for me as I get seasick easily. But then again I am talking about experience on a family yacht. Triumph is much much bigger so I hope it's not too bad for the cruisers on board.

Oh my gosh!:( I'm so sorry.

To the negative posters: Do you see that for some, this information from other CC members with family onboard is the only information they are getting for their loved ones? So, just chill out. Not everything needs to be a debate. Think of others for once.

Lynn, I hope you (or someone in the family) hears from her soon. She could possibly be one of the people who has a dead fone and is waiting to charge it.

I bet the first order of business was to remove alcohol. Not knowing what would need to be done at any given moment during this initial emergency immediately says, no more alcohol for anyone. We need people with it and sober.

Assuming the cutter is on site, its common procedure to put officers on board the ship being rescued to coordinate communications and efforts between the bridge crews of both ships. Additional personnel may also be brought on board to assist with practical operations, medical services, and technical assistance.

Why would the USCG have to board the ship???

Apparently minibars were not an issue (I was responding to that question) - That said, I am certain that's why the bars are probably closed.

Someone posted an account from onboard that pax were allowed back into cabins, so I suspect they've found a way around that.
