Ok, 90 miles NORTH. That makes much more sense on many levels.

CARNIVAL TRIUMPH

STATEMENT FROM GERRY CAHILL, PRESIDENT & CEO, CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES

February 12, 2013, 8:30pm ET

The Carnival Triumph, while on a four-day cruise that departed Galveston last Thursday, experienced an engine room fire on Sunday morning and has been without propulsion in the Gulf of Mexico since that time. The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was successfully extinguished. Fortunately, there were no injuries to guests or crew members.

Earlier this evening, the first of two tugboats arrived and is tied up to the ship with the second expected in the early hours of Tuesday morning. We had originally planned to tow the ship to Progreso, Mexico, the closest port to the ship’s location early Sunday. Since that time, the ship has drifted about 90 miles north due to strong currents. This now puts the ship nearly equidistant to Mobile, Alabama and given the strength of the currents, it is preferable to head north to Mobile, rather than attempt to tow against them. We now expect to arrive in Mobile sometime on Thursday, roughly the same time the ship would have arrived in Progreso given the distance the ship has traveled. From there, we will provide the necessary transportation to get our guests home. Mobile also provides simpler re-entry, particularly for the 900 guests onboard traveling without passports.

We have maintained constant contact with the ship’s officers. All of our guests are safe, and we’re doing everything we can to make them as comfortable as possible. The ship has maintained emergency generator power since the fire occurred and the technical team on board has been successful in gradually restoring auxiliary power to operate some basic hotel functions. Currently, public and cabin toilets are operational in certain sections of the ship, power has been restored to a limited number of elevators, and some power in the Lido dining area is providing for hot coffee and limited hot food service.

All guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund for the cruise, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges.

We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience, discomfort, and frustration our guests are feeling. We know they expected a fantastic vacation, and clearly that is not what they received. Our shipboard and shoreside teams are working around the clock to care for our guests and get them home safely.

Current AP article: http://bigstory.ap.org/article/tug-boats-reach-disabled-cruise-ship-monday as of 25 mins still Mexico. One of the tugs is coming from Mobile, which may be a point of confusion

Thanks for posting this. This article has the statements from Brent Nutt, who heard from his wife onboard, that was quoted by several other sites and reposted here a few times.

When another Carnival cruise ship, the Legend, rendezvoused with the stranded vessel Monday, supplying Triumph passengers with food and supplies, Texas resident Brent Nutt was able to briefly chat with his wife, Bethany, who could draw a cellphone signal from the visiting cruise line.

Without power, the ship's stabilizers are apparently not working, Nutt told The Associated Press, and the massive liner had been leaning to one side Sunday. By Monday afternoon, the ship seemed more upright, he said.

"She sounded a whole lot better today than she did yesterday," Nutt said about two hours after chatting with his 32-year-old wife.

Passengers were also given food, Nutt said, and some of the bathrooms are working. But the ship is dirty, Nutt said his wife told him.

"There's water and feces all over the floor," Nutt relayed. "It's not the best conditions. You would think Carnival would have something in place to get these people off the ship."

Passengers also are getting sick and throwing up, he said, adding that his wife told him: "The whole boat stinks extremely bad."

Melinda Ramos, meanwhile, said her father was laughing when she briefly spoke to him on Sunday.

"He might be completely joking, but he said they're sleeping in tents outside," the 19-year-old daughter of Mary and Matt Ramos told The Houston Chronicle.

Just joined this site, after reading it extensively trying to find info about the situation on this ship. My wife is aboard for her very first cruise. She and her best friend have a cabin just forward of the centerline of the ship.

She has reported to me through texts, and 2 phone calls she managed to get out while the other ships were moving supplies aboard. She tells me she has not heard of or seen any functioning restrooms/etc. She said she not not seen anyone fighting for food, but she had seen that people waiting in very long lines were pileing up the food and (hoarding) taking it to their cabins as if there would be no more. She said the crew was assuring all that there was plenty of food, but many pax were ignoring this advice. At 16:29 CST she said that 1 of the tug boats was in site. And they they had been advised that they may not be into port until friday.

Has it been confirmed that they are now underway via the tugs?

They're saying Thursday now, but a least that extra time will get them directly to US. I hope it's not friday for those poor people. They have to be like "get me *&^% off here and outta here!" by now.

...One note to those booking travel on the Triumph when she returns to service - avoid the ice buckets.

That was sage advice proffered by someone on the Splendor fire thread years ago.....

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww  I miss my vomiting smiley that's on my old PC hard drive. I could have used it well here!

Thanks for the update, I guess it is much better for the passengers to get off in Mobile. It is horrible that they have to stay in ship all the way until thursday, I feel really bad for them. Hopefully Carnival is doing all they can to ease up the situation.

That will save Carnival a ton of money!!

Yup, and put them within range of several shipyards capable of repairs to large diesels and open-frame generators.

I can only imagine how much work has to be done to test/repair/replace the relay and signalling circuitry and controls, as well as chasing grounds and shorts.

Seems like if it drifted that far north, they would just go ahead and tow it to Galveston. How much farther could Galveston be than Mobile?

Fair question. On my map, equidistant between Mobile and Merida is almost as close to Galveston as it is to Mobile.

Maybe their tug arrangement is to tow to the closest port... plus the fact that one tug was reported as being from Mobile may also be a factor.

Cool! If I were on board, I would just want to get off that $$%# ship as soon as possible. Progreso or Mobile, who cares!
