The definitive Cheers program Thread

Just off the dream and we had the cheers program. To us it was worth it just knowing our final bill and not worrying about trying a different drink we may not like. Here are a couple notes.

1. We bought ours as soon as we boarded at the atrium bar.

2. It was 42 plus the gratuities.

3. Tax was not charged to the total amount. We paid 44 cents tax on the few drinks each we got while still in port Canaveral.

4. We only needed 6 to 7 frozen drinks or coctails a piece per day to break even!

5. We took it very easy with drinking.

6. Saved all the receipts and added up at the end. We DID break even plus more!

7. You can take your receipts for classic coctails to the casino for $5 match play on the tables. We had about 20 classic coctails.

8. Bar tendera didnt cheat us on alcohol content. I watched them make our drinks.

9. They would let you know when you were coming close to the 15 drink limit.

10. If you were at say 13 drinks. You could buy a drink over 10 $ or a bucket of beer to keep yourself from being cut off after 15 drinks.

11. If you get cut off. Other people could buy you drinks with their sail and sign. Just pay them back.

If Anyone has any questions just ask!

My sister and I were on Glory April 28-May 5 and after having our first Margarita at the Atrium bar we decided to get the Cheers program. They did credit the drink we just ordered in order to put it under the program.

I am 95% sure we paid tax on the program. It was $691? for the 2 of us for 7 night cruise which makes it $49 each per day.

We did not find it worth it for us. If we had no ports of call, maybe. But when you are in port for 3/4 of the day you do not drink nearly as much. I knew going into it that we may not break even and I was fine with that. This was our first cruise and I did not want to be surprised with a massive bar bill at the end.

I loved that I could try different drinks without worrying about wasting money because I did not like something. It was great for that!!!

1 bar would let me get a drink for my sister who waved when I was ordering, but at the Ebony bar they would not, even though they had just done the same thing for the person 2 people ahead of us! I was not impressed. She was sitting 20 feet away waving but he refused to even start her drink unless she was there right then. Again- They did it for somebody else.

Overall I was happy with the program, even though I did not come out ahead.

Cheers ;)

No, you paid a 15% gratuity on top, not taxes.

I really wish people would stop saying this.

Ok what is considered a classic cocktail for the $5 casino play?

They are in their own section of the menu.

2 I can think of are Long Island Ice Tea and Mai Ti.

Correct...and the other four are Sex on the Beach, The Cruiser, Mojito and Ultimate Margarita. Sex on the Beach has OJ and cranberry juice mixed with vodka and peach schnapps. Add coconut rum and pineapple juice to it and you have the Cruiser. They all run 8.75 plus 15% tip, unless the price has gone up recently. They are under 10, so they qualify for Cheers and they qualify for redeeming your free drink coupon at lunch or brunch.

Can you get buckets of beer on the Cheers Program?

No. Someone said they got a bucket from a bartender, and they got a beer every five minutes to make their own bucket of beer.

This wouldn't work if you consume a beer in under five minutes. :)

Some people have said you are cut off after 15 drinks, and then not able to buy any more drinks at all (paid for seperately outside of the program).

If this is the policy, why does Carnival not cut ALL consumers off after 15 drinks?

It doesn't make sense that only Cheers passengers have a limit.

The program is optional and you have to abide by Carnival's rules of being cut off at 15 drinks if you wish to participate in the program. RCI and Celebrity have similar programs with two different levels and their programs are unlimited and Celebrity's Premium package includes many other drink options that are not included with the Cheers package.

It's all part of the buying decision as to which cruise line you wish to sail on. If you are set on Carnival and you want a drink package, then you're cut off at 15. If you can take the blinders off and see what other options are available as a savvy consumer, then Carnival Platinum cruisers like myself will choose one of those other options. Just like I have done with my next two cruises.

Trying to see if this will have value for us ahead of booking (as if going to do cheers we will be better off booking 2 cabins).

I have 2 cocktails (3 at a push on a sea day) per day and we also usually share a bottle of wine between us with diner - My husband may manage 4 drinks max (beer or wiskey) as well as his half share of a bottle of wine in a day. On our last cruise we bought the middle wine package and found that the wine on it was fine for us. - However, we didn't fancy many wines from the basic pack. - I think our bar bill was $300 for the 7 nights for all of us 2 adults and included bottemless bubbles for our youngest dd and several non alco cocktails drinks for our eldest dd and the middle wine pack. However, if free we would have drunk a little more- (we would probably have managed 1 extra alco cocktail and one non alco cocktail/coffee each per day)

Our eldest will be 21 next cruise but is diabetic so can't drink more than 3 alco drinks in a day - So if we do cheers will will get a second room for the girls- this would then be cheeper than us all in one room and the 3 of us on the cheers.

What sort of wine is available through cheers?

Do you think cheers would be worth it for us

Any wine (up to $10 per glass) is included with Cheers.

As far as whether or not it's worth it, if your bar bill was $300 in the past - probably not. For a 7 day cruise, even if you buy Cheers on day 2, you're looking at $593 for 2 adults ($49.40 per day with gratuity x 2 adults x 6 days); $692 if you buy all 7 days.

I'm considering Cheers for our upcoming cruise, but our typical bar bill is in the $500-$750 range. We'll probably about break even, but it would be convenient to know the exact amount I'll spend, plus we may be more likely to try different drinks than I otherwise might if I were paying $7+ each for them.

Note that Bottomless Bubbles (and nonalcoholic fruity drinks) is included with Cheers, but you'll have to buy them separately for any kids.

No, it doesn't- not in the scenario I outlined. People are saying after their 15 drinks they are not able to purchase more drinks, for additional money.

So they are turning away money on drinks.

I see perfect sense in a 15 drink limit under the program, rather than a true unlimited. But if other passengers can purchase more than 15, why can cheers passengers not purchase, for an additional per drink fee, more drinks?

Yes, I would like to know the answer to this too. It just doesn't make financial sense to me. Maybe I'm wrong

My guess is to discourage people from giving some of their 15 drinks to other people. If you know you are going to want all 15, you wouldn't want to give any away if you will be cut off at 15. Although once you hit the limit, someone else can buy you a drink...it's not like they send you to your cabin and lock the door until the next morning.

NO, it's not even close. Your last cruise's tab was only 300, even if you doubled it to 600, you're still not at the Cheers break even point, which is just under 700. Book whichever cabin configuration makes the most sense for you and just consume your normal amount of drinks on a pay as you go basis. Happy cruising.

You can work the program even if not big drinkers. We went with another couple who brought their kids. One adult was booked with the kids and bought the drink package. We all had drinks of the program (3-4 a day each) to the max of 15/day. Most waiters had no problem bringing a couple at a time with a small tip. I think sometime they did not ring them through because we went over 15/day with no extra charges.
