We sail 6/8/13 Our passports Expire 12/1/13. I thought I read were passports are invalid for travel 6 months before experation. Is that true?

Thanks in advance

Keith

some countries-not the US- require passports to have six months left upon admission...but if you a traveling a route where birth certificates and picture id alone are ok then a passport with less than six months left is ok too..

It is correct about the 6 months expiration and also that you can use a BC. The only way this would be a problem is if you needed to use the passport. I assume you got your passport before for peace of mind (if you always used it for cruising) so I would assume you would want to renew for that same peace of mind. Just my opinion.

It is not true for any places you will visit on your Liberty cruise in June.

No one will even want to see your passport except:

When you check in to board at the beginning of your cruise.

When you return to the US.

Assuming you hold a US passport--

Look on the State Deptartment website for entry requirements

for the countries you will be traveling to

http://travel.state.gov/travel/travel_1744.html

When DD travels in groups there always seems to be one that has problems. First time a 17yo gal's passport didn't have the 6mos remaining. The gal only had 3 mos remaining. She had to get a passport at the Fed building then fly out the next day. She lost two days of her trip and had to fly to Ecuador by herself. She handled herself better than most adults.

Last trip several people had passport issues and one was denied onto the flight because of a visa issue.

As long as you are doing a closed route itinerary where the ship leaves and returns to the same U.S. port you will be fine as long as you have 1 day left on the passport.

If you are flying to another country you'd more than likely need at least 6 months left on your passport .

We are traveling in April, and our passports expire four months after that. I had read on here that passports are required to have a 6 month validity after the end of the cruise, so I e-mailed Carnival to ask. Basically they told me that I needed to check with each of the countries we will be visiting to see what their individual requirements are. I did this and found that only two of the countries we are visiting have requirements that are lomnger than the length of the visit. Curacau, and Aruba both require 3 months after the end of the visit... so we are good to go.

The following is a copy of the response from Carnival

Hello ********,

Thank you for contacting us. We appreciate the opportunity to be of assistance.

We're very excited that you're going to be sailing with us. We are sure that you're going to experience a fun and memorable cruise. The 6 month validity is a recommendation by Carnival and not a requirement by the Department of Homeland Security. Guests will not be denied boarding if they do not meet this recommendation.

Keep in mind that this is applies only for U.S. Citizens.

You are advised to check with the appropriate government authority to determine the necessary travel documents. Carnival assumes no responsibility for advising guests of Immigration requirements. Guests without proper identification may be refused boarding or entry into the United States.

Thank you for choosing Carnival.

Sincerely,

The passport is needed to get back in the U.S. not to get into other countries so I don't know why a different country would make a difference. As far as ID to get on the ship it would not make a differene to Carnival and you would have no problem using it. The only time a problem might become apparent is if you needed it to get back into the U.S. It seems so many people think it is needed to get into a country. No just to get back into yours if you are a U.S. citizen and have to fly back.

this is just not accurate. most countries except for the carribe mexico and a few others require all non-citizens to have a current valid passport. some require a minimum time of six months before it expires some require visa-normally attached to your passport and some require a certain number of blank continous pages in your passport

if going there for a stay of 24-48 hours then you are correct.

For closed loop cruises pax are considered in transit and the passport is not needed until you get back to the U.S.

Keep in mind that when your driver license expires states are now saying "passport please"...either that or a long form birth certificate...so why not renew.

Not sure i understand your post? When my drivers license expires who is saying passport please, and why?

Here is the Dept. of State travel site:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_4965.html#A. Click on the country and then click on the "Entry/Exit Requirements for US Citizens". If there is a 'months remaining' requirement for the passport, it will say here. I know for Mexico, there is no requirement for amount of time left on the passport before expiration.

From what I've read, it isn't necessary, but suggested, that you renew your passport within the last year of it's expiration.

"But I paid for 10 years of coverage with my passport!" Big deal. Live with the fact that you might as well renew within your tenth year. I know that a passport isn't cheap, but, it sure makes life better if you happen to need to leave a foreign country in a pinch.

Just MHO, of course!;)

as long as you have time on your passport you can leave in a pinch.

The reason some countries want 6 months on your passport is if something unforseen happens and you can't leave right away you have enough time left on your passport.

they don't want you to be stuck there so if you need to leave in a pinch they'll be glad to let you go.:)

We had to confirm our passport expiration dates but this is probably because we are flying to the US from Scotland but I think it will differ if you are travelling only within the US and there is no requirement to have a passport to travel

Hi Keith,

you didn't say to which countries you are travelling. You will not have any issues with the US entering or leaving as long as your passport has yet to expire, however some countries require your passport to have 6 months remaining before allowing entry, some require 3 months, some require 7 days, etc...it is based upon the country(ies) you may be visiting.

As someone else pointed out, as a cruise passenger most countries consider you "in transit" and don't require a passport while there. For example, cruisers going round trip in the Carribean are often allowed to go with just a Birth Certificate.

If you are seriously concerned visit the state department at http://travel.state.gov/travel/travel_1744.html

On this page, choose the country(ies) you are visiting, click "go" then on the next page select "Entry/Exit Requirements for U.S. Citizens".

If you are this concerned then why would you ask some stranger on the internet? If you are smart enough to post a question here, you are smart enough to go read on the state department website. ;) Go check with the STATE DEPARTMENT and rest easy, mon! :)

That said, the state dept recommends that you renew your passport 9 months before expiration. I remember there was a year where they were so backed up that it was taking up to 6 months to get passports renewed, but usually it takes about 6-8 weeks max. (Oh and don't forget there is the possible govt shutdown coming this 2013 so why take chances? Get it done before the sequester takes effect!)
