The only sure thing is that you'll have fun on the cruise. You'll probably have at least two transfers . Layovers can be from 1.5 to 6 hrs depending on the flights.

We are on the same cruise.

Once you get your flight arrangements you have the option of rejecting them and booking on your own with a credit for the air not taken.

You can also have your TA talk to Oceania and find out if there are alternative routes. (Do your homework first so you know what you could book on your own.) They will either reject or accept your suggestion/request or quote a price difference.

We usually book on our own as we like to go in a day or two early to make sure we are on the ship and not delayed in flight by weather, etc.

If you have a good TA they should be used to doing this.

Why dont you ask for a deviation and get what you want??

Just be aware that the deviation fee is $150 per person, and once the air itinerary has been accepted and booked, that is non-refundable.

That being said, it gives great piece of mind to arrive at least one day ahead of time. Spending a night in Athens would give you some rest and let you enjoy your cruise. This in itself can justify the deviation fee, which then lets you choose your flights. We recently did this, and chose Premium economy flights on British Airways for a modest $600 upgrade fee.

We've done the Black Sea route, and it is wonderful. Do try to plan some extra days in Istanbul post-cruise--a truly enchanting city. This would be another excuse to justify that deviation fee (you can plan your entire flight itinerary, both ways, for one fee.)
