Has anyone ever actually missed the boat in port?

Really .... ? Heckling? I hope this behavior isn't typical of Carnival guests ... if so, we should christen Carnival with a new nickname ... rather than 'The Everyday Man's Cruise Line' ... maybe we should re-name it 'The Pubescent People's Cruise Line"?

Don't be late and you won't be heckled.

Now there is a big difference between the pier runners who have balloon hats, boas and plastic neon yard glasses and the couple who had the broken leg.

That being said, one of the great joys of cruising is watching people run, stumble and make fools of themselves, because they can't tell time.

I love it in Cozumel when the ship starts blasting their horn after they're missing a few people past boarding time and watch people in Senor Frogs (or whatever that open air bar is) at the end of the pier wake the hell up and start scrambling out running for dear life with their balloon sombreros and drinks in their hands.

I've heard about a lot of these stories... But, I've always wondered, what happens when those who get left behind have their young kids in the kid's club???

Indeed! I did this in one of my Costa Maya visit. I left my DS who was 5 at the time. We hired a cab to visit the pyramid at Chachoben (sp). I realized it was really gutsy for us to take that trip because it was FAR from the pier. I was worried that we can get stuck in the middle of nowhere if our car broke down. We were very lucky that all went well, and we were able to get back on the ship with plenty of time to do a beach massage....DS had a ball while in camp so I didnt feel so guilty anymore :) I think lots of people take risks, unfortunately, we cant predict everything. I guess it is worth paying the excursiin through carnival if you plan on taking an excursion that is far away.

Despite what you read on this website, passengers missing the ship is pretty rare.

People will tell stories but in actuality they are few and fare between. I would bet more people pass away on ships.

Most of the ones who miss are not always on some excursion far off, but usually do to not having the correct ship time set on their watch.

One review was from a couple who sat in port eating ice cream watching the ship leave, they didnt' think it was their ship because they had another hour. So they thought.

Also the ships will wait as long as they can, especially if someone is in contact with them about the status of your location. It does not have to be a "ship sponsered excursion" for them to do that.

But at some point the ship has to leave.

Every legit vender knows the worst thing that could happen to the business is letting a passenger miss a ship.

If you leave your passport in your cabin safe, carry a photocopy of it with you when you go ashore. Also, you can scan a color image of your passport and ship's boarding passes, and send it to yourself via email (hotmail, gmail, etc) prior to your trip. That way, you have an accessible copy if the original gets stolen. That makes it much easier when trying to get everything sorted out with the authorities.

Really? What port did you present a color copy or black and white for that matter, and it actually made it so much easier?

From experience -- copies are so easily forged they are useless in getting documentation to travel home or across a border. The authorities will simply trash the copy or give it back to you and then start the questions that will lead to your ability to obtain the documentation needed to get you where you want to go.

The copy may be helpful when purchasing something in a port but that is about it.

It is amazing how many people that have never been in this situation post this myth as if it is the gospel.

Trust me, when you're one of the peeps on board being delayed from leaving because some moron didn't pay attention to the time and holds up the ship's departure, you will join the hecklers. :)

One time we were in Coz and there was a ship on each side of the pier. This family finally showed up over an hour late and came running down the 'alley' and folks at the railing of both ships burst into applause and yelling. :D

If you're on an excursion you purchased through the cruise line and the group has some problems getting back on time the ship will wait on them. That's their biggest selling point.

As far as missing the boat, if you're concerned about it, by all means take the ship's excursions. The ship always waits for them to return.

The ship will wait as long as possible for passengers on ship-sponsored excursions. But the tide waits for no man, and eventually they must depart. At that point the cruise line bears the cost of getting those folks to the next port or home. But don't fool yourself that they won't ever leave you behind, because they might.

It would seem reasonable to say that at least having your passport number will put you ahead in getting an emergency replacement. That is why I keep a copy of mine. It assures me that I have the exact number. Hopefully I will never know the particulars on getting myself an emergency replacement.

This has to be one of the most ridiculous reasons people use to justify being jerks to folks that are late getting back to the ship. "oh you held up our departure", what difference does it make? are you trying to beat rush hour traffic? do you think they won't start the buffet on time? Who cares what time the ship actually leaves port.

It really is sad that so many people get so much pleasure out of others misfortune. And then justify that behavior by saying "oh they held up our departure and we couldn't enjoy our cruise because of it".

I truly hope those that enjoy making fun of folks being late back to the ship don't ever have an unforeseen problem that causes them to be late......because karma really does come back to bite you.

We were in St Thomas one time downtown and there was a really nasty fight in the street between some really drunk guy and an owner of one of the jewelry stores (OLD guy) and his "crew" and my husband wanted to be the hero and help out. I knew we were already pushing it getting back to the ship in time. We weren't late (still back before the posted time) but we were close to being late.

It was the most nerve wracking thing for me and we were both shaky over it all night. My husband STILL brings that fight up every time we go to STT.

I was actually thinking about getting a passport card in addition to my passport. That way I could take my passport with me in case for some reason I did miss the ship I would have it. Then if it got stolen, I would have my passport card in my safe which would get me back into the country via ship. Now if I got robbed, AND missed the ship I would still be out of luck.

But I haven't done it yet. I always use my passport and bring a drivers license off the ship for ID. Guess I could do the same with a passport card too. Just don't know if I want to spend the money on it. Any opinions?

whoops...you are talking about my all-time favorite port activity. I think they should list it in the daily newsletter. Grab a drink and head up top and watch the hilarity ensue. There is even an etiquette to it - cheer the runners and boo the walkers, and heaven help those who saunter.

And I have to hand it to the Carnival crowd - best pier-runners by far in all my many viewings!

Yep. I felt the same way when I went out and left my kids on board. We only went to shop for an hour at the straw market in Nassau with the ship in sight the entire time and I still felt nervous... But I'm just wondering what they do when the parents don't make it back onboard. Do they bring them to their rooms and have a sitter stay with them? That seems most logical. But what about when they get back to the home port. Do they hand the kids over to customs???

Chill dude. :) See you only have 19 posts. Have you ever experienced the 'heckling' in person? If not, then don't really see how you can say anything. And I personally have never heard or seen anything mean spirited in the "heckling". Its always just worth a good laugh.

Sounds like my kind of fun! LOL I'll make sure I'm up on the Lido to observe. I saw the youtube video of a completely WASTED NCL passenger who could not walk back to the ship and had to be tied to a wheelchair and wheeled back on the ship. SMH Enjoy yourself but don't become so inebriated that you can't walk back onboard and are doing a pretty funny impression of a dead fish.

This happened to a couple I knew. They were 20 minutes late. The ship TURNED AROUND and head back to port to pick up late passengers. They boarded a Harbor Pilot boat and were transported to the ship. Passengers were then transfered while at sea. Why? They were the parents of a child who had been left on board the ship. Captains don't like having unescorted minors in their custody.

We sailed in Dec. 2012 and a couple with a baby carriage were late getting back to the ship. I heard from some friends of ours that the woman was pleading for the passengers to get someone to stop the ship. My friend was very upset watching this sobbing woman. I watched the whole thing go down, and kept wondering how in the hell, you could have a small child with you and NOT GET BACK TO THE SHIP ON TIME!!! the ship stresses to you over and over again, to go by ship time not local time, or your cell phone time. we are so fearful of getting back that we head back 2 hours early in case our time is messed up. At least they were all together as a family. It would of been so upsetting to learn they had other children on board and the ship did not wait on them. It is one thing to make fun of people that are casual and seem flip about expecting a ship to wait on them, it is another when it is a mother and father with a small child. I am sure the parents had good resons and we will never know what caused their mistake in time.

With that said. we did do the behind the fun tour and the captain told us the couple and their child were able to get on the Pride and had a nice ride back to Baltimore instead of Galveston. The ship provided clothing for them and by the time they departed Baltimore, their passports and clothing would be there for them.

Captain explained that they have a schedule to keep and can't wait on people who do not keep track of their time, He assured us they were taken care of?

I got it in writing that they would not leave without us before we went on the belize full day trip - carnival sponsered trip (legend cruise). My dd needs essential meds (that have to be kept cool) that we had to leave on the ship.- Thus I got them to guarantee they would not leave without us.

We ALMOST got left behind in Mexico....this was the one time I was so thankful we had booked a Ship Sponsored Excursion.

Our excursion was pretty far from port so there was not much time for problems. Well, our van driver spotted one of his buddies headed back to port at the same time as us so he started doing a little racing to see who could get back faster. This involved some darting in and out of lanes to try and to get in front of each other. Well after about 10 minutes of this our driver clipped another car so we had to stop so he could exchange info ect. Well the women he clipped was not happy so within a few minutes numerous Mexican police officers arrived. Now we were starting to get nervous about getting back to port. The police would not let our driver leave to get us back to port. Our 2 escorts were doing their best to explain the situation to the officers and get us out of there. All we could think about was our passports being on the ship.

After about 30 minutes a motorcycle officer escorted our van back to the port...but even then they would not let the driver or van into the secure area of the port. So we all, about 10 passengers, had to high-tail it from the main road to the ship. I would estimate it was about a 3/4 mile stretch to security. The ship waited about 20 minutes past the normal sail time.

Even with this happening I have planned several non-ship excursions!

And I can guarantee there's a limit to how long they would have waited for you. After which you would have found your daughter's meds in an ice chest with the port agent, and your ship long gone. And then they would have made transportation arrangements for you.
