Sleeping on the plane

I travel a great deal and long since have learned to sleep on planes. I can get to sleep because I always have my own eye shades and ear plugs, a shawl to use to keep warm (which is also a clothing item for my whole trip) and I go easy on food and alcohol.

Although my Kindle is tempting, I shut it off and just sleep.

Oh boy, do I agree. IMO, one of the best things for a comfortable flight is a good set of noise cancelling earphones. Most people do not realize how much difference it makes to remove that constant background drone. My last long flight was 11+ hours (Frankfurt to San Francisco). I was sleeping two ours out of Frankfurt and woke up one hour out of SFO.

The noise canceling headset plus a mask to completely block light together work wonders -- when you have no outside stimulation , and have a light blanket (unless the place is very hot) your chances of grabbing a couple of hours sleep are a lot better.

Folks, this is one of the most effective air travel suggestions out there. It is surprising how few people do this.

Thanks for this suggestion.

One other suggestion: I don't care how silly I look, on a long haul flight I wear pajamas or other comfortable clothes. No jeans, no trousers, no button shirts, no collars, no bulky shoes. I just wear flip flops and then when I'm on the plane I take them off and put socks on. If I go to the bathroom I put them back on of course.
