Any chance of single cabins on HAL?

Recommended Posts

HAL like other service companies does respond to input and backlash, that's why they have a PR department and they are always sending us surveys.

I think it's reasonable to submit a formal request to HAL HQ saying, Hey please consider putting 20 solo cabin's on the new ship and if it works consider adding solo's to the Vista/Signature class ships.

So you're saying the calculation is made by numbers of cabins and not square footage? Why? How would two small cabins work out ( at 60% the floor space?) would 90 or 100 square foot cabin be practical?

I think you are missing Bruce Muzz's point...It has nothing to do with square footage ..It's all about construction costs..

IMO he is saying that two small singles (at 60%) floor space with bath/shower can cost almost double the costs to build as one larger cabin for two psgrs. to build..

It sounds like it's basically the same in home /condo construction.. When we were looking to purchase a condo, a 1200 Sq Ft condo (60%) was close to the same amount as 2,000 Sq ft. condo's in the same area & built at the same time.. Of course in condo's they also take the amenities into consideration..

A Friend told us, the cost of construction was almost the same.. Therefore, two 1200 Sq ft. condo's could cost almost double what one 2,000 sq foot condo would cost to build..

Looks like the cruise lines must get the maximum benefit out of the costs of building a ship..

Understand your delima..If I was a single I too would be upset, but this seems to be a fact of life that will not change in the immediate future..;)

Cheers...:)Betty

A friend joined us for our December cruise. She had not been on a cruise in many years, so she was prepared to spend money on whatever she wanted to do. She ended up taking several shore excursions compared to our one. I'm sure HAL made money on her cruise in spite of her being up in the casino a few hundred dollars.

What about the cabin steward who loses out on a cruise worth of tips for every single traveler. I don't think it takes any longer to make up a single room then it does a room with two passengers. However the CS only gets half the amount of tips. On a seven day cruise 10 singleton rooms earns him $35 per room @ $5 per day for $350, 10 double rooms he gets $700. If you were a cabin steward which one would you choose?

The cruise line s/b making the cabin steward whole because they charge us double. Also, pretty much every cruise I leave an extra tip on top of the hsc.

One thing I do find funny is people that start threads on removing the hsc because they want to tip people "directly". I've never seen one of those threads started by a single. It's funny since some posters think all singles are cheap.

It sounds like you and I are very much alike. I've had similar experiences. I once had a "suite couple" at my dining table. They also were letting people know the hsc can be removed:rolleyes:. They removed theirs because they were upset about an excursion.

Count me in with you. Would rather take a ship excursion, than be stuck with a small private all day one with a lady and her stuffed elephant mascot. Happened to one of the solos I was with on the NCL Epic.

My cabin stewart when I sailed on the Epic in a studio, used to be up in the Haven(private suite area, with a butler, special restaurant, conceirge etc).

He said it was an easier job with the studios and the solos appreciated him more. I take this might mean they left a little extra for him.

Interesting. Thx for the info.

Please explain where I was griping about it? Also which cruise line do you work for that you have the inside information.

I never said YOU were griping, I quoted you because you said HAL was "pretending" that you don't spend as much as two people. They aren't pretending, they base their decisions on statistics. Statistics may be the third type of lie, as Mark Twain said, but businesses still use them to make pricing decisions.

I don't work for a cruise line, but knowing that businesses use statistics to make decisions is hardly "inside information".
