How far from land do the ships sail when headed to Canada?

Due to the recent cruise fires I got to thinking how far do the ships sail when headed to Portland, St John, Halifax and Sydney? In other words how far from land are you in case of a emergency?

Not as close as Costa Concordia. Seriously you will never be more than a few miles from shore. Maybe 70 miles at the most in the Gulf of St. Lawrence

Most of the time we couldn't see land between ports or if we could it was a speck onthe horizon, i'd say 25-50miles off.

One of the wits in our roll call has a quote in his signature about "no matter where you sail, you're never more than seven miles from land." When questioned about it, he said the ocean is no more than seven miles deep.;)

Well, there's being close to land and being too close to land . . .

 

In all honesty, this is one of the better routes to sail if something happens given that you are relatively close to land should something happen. Imagine if you were on a transatlantic or on your way to/from Hawaii; help would be far away.
