cruisingberger Posted July 2, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 2, 2013 On Friday last week we received a note in our cabin from HAL. We were on the Westerdam sailing Alaska. The note stated that our cruise ship had not been in Alaskan waters for 72 or more hours and that we would be given $19.50 credit per room for overpaid taxes. I was taken aback because I thought we had been in Alaskan waters for a significant amount of time, certainly more then 72 hours. I wondered where we had been and laughed a little because it occurred to me I had no idea where I was most of the time and couldn't have cared any less.:D
jtl513 Posted July 2, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 2, 2013 Anytime the casino is open that means you are at least 12 miles off shore, and in international waters, not AK waters. Still, I wonder how you didn't come within 12 miles of AK shore for 3 days! Part of it could have been in Canadian waters.

Someone mixed up two stock letters? Another thing: HAL normally says how much credit per person, not per cabin.
Krazy Kruizers Posted July 2, 2013 #4 Share Posted July 2, 2013 That was interesting. Wonder were you where?? Can you scan the letter so that we can read it?
shrimp56 Posted July 2, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 2, 2013 This post title wins the internet today. Stopped to make me think, though. On a cruise I seldom look at the map, preferring to be in a happy limbo until the next port.
PathfinderEss Posted July 2, 2013 #6 Share Posted July 2, 2013 That sounds strange to me that in 3 days you had not been in Alaskan waters. Oh well, enjoy the extra money.:D

It just means that you did not spend at least a total of 72 hours in Alaskan Waters. You could have been in Candian Waters or Intl. Either way, it means that those taxes are refunded to you. I think it happens rather frequently on those 7 day voyages.

The way I read it was that the ship had not been in AK waters for 72 continuous hours. ;)
