lovebrits Posted July 21, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 21, 2013 We will be in Edinburgh for the Tattoo this August. Can anyone recommend a nice restaurant in walking distance (typical Scottish fare). Thanks!
calmac Posted July 21, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 21, 2013 My first suggestion would be Dubh Prais on the Royal Mile http://www.dubhpraisrestaurant.com/ Also Angels with Bagpipes, also on the Royal Mile (going here for our 20th anniversary meal) http://www.angelswithbagpipes.co.uk/ Another option is The Witchery (went here for our first date) http://www.thewitchery.com/
tartanexile81 Posted July 22, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 22, 2013 How much were you expecting to pay in UKP? There's a great choice of restaurants in Edinburgh but prices do vary a great deal.
Rare uktog Posted July 22, 2013 #4 Share Posted July 22, 2013 Good suggestions from Calmac. Another good option a short distance from the Royal Mile is The Tower at the National Museum of Scotland
tartanexile81 Posted July 22, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 22, 2013 Good suggestions from Calmac. Another good option a short distance from the Royal Mile is The Tower at the National Museum of Scotland Yes agree they're good suggestions, and the only thing I thought was that if they were on their way to the tattoo, they might want something fairly casual or I'd have suggested Castle Terrace which we think is the best food in Edinburgh just now. Not sure the food at the Tower is very Scottish ... if I remember rightly. The Cellar Door Scottish restaurant on George IV Bridge gets VG reviews on TA, and it's on our list to go some time. WVBill Posted July 23, 2013 #6 Share Posted July 23, 2013 Thank you for this. We will be going to the Tattoo next August. I was looking at the web sites for the restaurants suggested by calmac and all look fantastic, majestic, elegant. But - If we're dressed for a long coach ride from Glasgow and for an evening outside at the Tattoo - will we be dressed appropriately for one of these restaurants? cnd crsr Posted July 23, 2013 #7 Share Posted July 23, 2013 We enjoyed a casual meal at The World's End on High Street (the Royal Mile). The seafood chowder was delicious.

tartanexile81 Posted July 24, 2013 #9 Share Posted July 24, 2013 We enjoyed a casual meal at The World's End on High Street (the Royal Mile). The seafood chowder was delicious. If you're looking for something Scottish not sure whether seafood chowder is right but the World's End is certainly very casual. This is the restaurant I mentioned and it's not grand and you could easily go dressed for the tattoo http://thecellardooredinburgh.com/ or this one http://www.whiskibar.co.uk/index.html. Both get good reviews on TripAdvisor, specialise in Scottish food and drink and are only 5 minutes walk from the castle. If you decide on one of them, I would just recommend emailing them to book a table on a tattoo evening as they are both popular.
spmurdock Posted July 25, 2013 #10 Share Posted July 25, 2013 Thanks for information about restaurants in Edinburgh. We will be there for the Royal Military Tattoo on Monday, 8/12 and thought we would make a reservation for the Whiski Bar on the Royal Mile (based on your recommendation). What time would you recommend we make a reservation? I read that people start lining up for the Tattoo early, but, didn't know what time we need to get in line? What do you recommend for a reservation time?
tartanexile81 Posted July 25, 2013 #11 Share Posted July 25, 2013 I wouldn't bother joining a long queue to get into the arena for the tattoo. You will have a reserved seat and if it's a rainy evening you don't want to be sitting getting wet anyway :(. The last time we were there unfortunately we had heavy rain for about an hour but it all went on as planned. I think I'd probably book a table for 7.00 (assuming you're going to the weekday show that starts at 9:00). That should give you enough time, but what do other locals think? calmac Posted August 3, 2013 #12 Share Posted August 3, 2013 OK, this evening we went to Angels with Bagpipes. The Royal Mile was jam packed with people as the Festival Fringe has started. Dress Code - jeans, T-shirts, casual, dressy - anything seemed to be accepted. Availability - we had booked in advance and had a table near the entrance. We were there for about 2.5 hours from 6pm and during that time many people walked in. At first, tables were available from about 9.30pm but soon they became fully booked. My advice - choose where you want to eat and BOOK a table in advance (if possible). Don't worry about what you wear - not relevant when the festival / tattoo is on. cruzin lady Posted September 9, 2013 #13 Share Posted September 9, 2013 We just returned from Edinburgh, and we ate one night at a casual restaurant City Restaurant. They have a huge variety of food. Three of us ate 3 different main courses, all good and reasonably priced. Cruzin Lady
