Passengers with an illeostomy

The disposable 'blue pads' that hospitals use are quite helpful - just put one on top of the bottom sheet @ bedtime. Your room steward will be happy to supply you with plastic bags that you can use for their sanitary disposal.

Does he "leak" from the ileostomy at home? If he doesn't, there really shouldn't be a problem on the cruise, but the disposable pads are really a good idea.

Does he or you do his ileostomy care at home and do you or him change ileostomy? Or do you have someone come in and do it? If he leaks at home, as a nurse I would have an ostomy specialist review his products and re-evaluate them to see if they are still appropriate. Ideallly, he should have no leakage around the stoma as that could impair the skin integrity around the stoma.

My mother has had an ileostomy bag for 40 years. She handles all the care herself and only ever has a leakage problem if she has a gastric upset or has eaten something she should not have. Although she does not travel anymore (she is 91) she had no issues in the past.

I hope you and your husband enjoy the cruise.

Many thanks for all your replies. My hubby was a colostomist for 36 years with no problems ever, then as he puts it was promoted to an ileostomy. He deals with changing and hygiene himself. He has the occasional 'accident' at home, hence the enquiry. He's tried several options of pouches and has settled on one that suits. The enquiry is just 'an in case' he doesn't want to embarrass the steward.

He's contacting the stoma nurse re the blue pads for the bed.

On behalf of hubby, once again thank you for the advice.

I hope you both have a wonderful cruise! Glad to hear that he has what he needs!
