Villefranche. What to do?

Missed out on a ship tour to Monaco and Monte Carlo. It's not available any,ore. Any suggestions?

Villefranche is a nice place to walk around but it won't take you all day. You could walk to the train station and take the train to Nice or Monaco. Another ship tour possibility is one that goes to Eze or St. Paul.

Have you read any of the pages on this board? there is a LOT of info here that may be of help to you as to what you can do for the day DYI or maybe hiring a driver. You can check your roll call.Do check on board as some people on the tour you want may cancel.You have lots of choice here...really.

Yep. very pleasant place for a stroll or a drink or two. But nowhere near enough to fill your day. It's very easy to take the coastal train to Monaco or half a dozen other places - stacks of your fellow-cruisers will be doing the same thing. Trains are way different to those in the US. Station is a ten minute walk from the tender jetty, trains every 30 mins or so, journey time to Monaco about 15 mins, costs pennies.

Take a bus or taxi up to the palace / museum area, great views from there too. Or it's a stiff uphill walk of 20 - 30 mins to that area.

You can get a road-train from there which does a 40-minute tour of Monaco - Grand Prix circuit, harbour, casino etc. Or just walk those places from the rail station

I agree with Hank- The bus journey to Monaco is lovely as it goes all along the coast road providing spectacular views- and yes, for just one euro.

We have been to Nice and Monaco many times, so we tend to explore the small port of Villefranche and then find our way to the local beach and swim in the beautiful ocean. The times we've been there there's also been a very tiny market selling local crafts and lavender goods.

Whatever you decide, it's a beautiful area.

Agree with the previous post and personally do prefer the bus over the train because of the views and frequency of the #100 bus. The TER (regional buses) are one of the best bargains in all of France and MC.... Only 1 Euro! and the buses are very nice and clean.

The cost of a bus ride on the Cote d'Azur has increased from EUR1 to EUR1.50.

 

Although the bus trip between Nice - Villefranche - Monte Carlo is very scenic, be prepared to have to stand as the buses can be really overcrowded especially when a cruise ship is there.

 

Instead of going to Monte Carlo I would recommend going to Nice instead as it is much more interesting. Or take the train to Antibes?

OMG! Say it isn't so. At 1 Euro those regional buses were one of the best bargains in the EU. Now, it is still one of the best bargains in the EU.
