New Orleans dinner

If you can, stay out of the tourist traps and go on Frenchman Street, (which is just outside of the French Quarter) and try one of the small funky places that serves great New Orleans food and has live music...my favorite is Snug Harbor....but they are all good,....try to get there early around 7 pm before the crowds come out and just walk around and find a place you are comfortable with....check with the bell man at your hotel for suggestions, tell him you want to eat, where he would take his best friend from out of town...

House of Blues has a great Sunday Jazz/Gospel Brunch and not that far from the cruise terminal

You can`t go wrong with the Copper Monkey. A small bar in the French Quarter where the locals go for food. It's not a big place but a small bar that holds about 75 people.

I can't say enough about this place.

New Orleans is our favorite city!

*Commander's Palace is in the Garden District; if you can get in, that is my suggestion -- but they fill up months ahead of time, so...

Other ideas -- all require a reservation:

French Quarter:

-NOLA

-Red Fish Grill

-Bayonna

-Galatoire's (no reservation needed for downstairs; but you will wait)

-Acme Oyster House

Business District:

-Couchon

-Emeril's

-Mulate's (no reservation needed; fun Cajun place)

If cost is no consideration, make reservations now for Commander's........ that being said, if the food matters more to you than the reputation or atmosphere, hard to beat Dragos.

AND if you go to Dragos, MAKE yourself do the charbroiled oysters.

There are TONS of 'wannabe' versions, but can't beat Dragos.

(And I don't even LIKE oysters)

In any case, enjoy your trip and your cruise

I'm not going to make a recommendation; I just want to give you some background on the recommendations you are getting.

They are all over the place as to type of venue to style of food. They all have advantages and positives, but they are very different in atmosphere and cuisine.

Some of the recommendations are fine dining and of a style only to be found in New Orleans. Some are "joints" - casual local and tourist favorites. A couple are oyster specialists. Some are rather funky but good. One is really funky; the restroom is an adventure.

Some of the most popular have not been mentioned.

What kind of restaurant are you looking for? What kind of food are you hoping to sample? Is there an area in New Orleans you would like to dine in?

We ate at Acme Oyster House when we were there last Wednesday ... we really liked it, I'm pretty sure the pecan cobbler is illegal in at least 25 states.

I especially loved walking the block & 1/2 back to our hotel in broad daylight and having to pass the naked male & female strippers standing outside a club drumming up business. My son (16) and I thought it was hilarious, however my daughter (17) was super-embarrassed. My husband had no comment, surprisingly enough.
