Hi, everyone. My DH, 16 yo DS , 14 yo DD, and I are spending 4 nights in Barcelona post cruise next Aug. Any recommendations out of Barcelona for day trips for quaint villages, authentic food, possibly lovely beaches for the kids who will have had their fill of history and landmarks? Even night trips is doable. We would probably be flying out of Barcelona to return home.

I highly recommend a day trip to Figueres to see the Dali Museum and Theatre (and the Dali Jewels museum). It's an easy trip by train to Figueres where you can see the museums and stop for lunch before taking the train back. I wasn't a Dali fan by any means when I went, but it was so spectacular and unusual, I was floored and so very pleased I made the trip. Here are some of my photos http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=14694571@N00&q=dali, and here's the official website http://www.salvador-dali.org/museus/figueres/en_index.html Of course, if you'd rather take a tour bus there, there are many to choose from, but I enjoyed the very European experience of taking the train.

I did an overnight trip to Bilbao, and I wish I'd spent more time there, but it is a very long train trip and so not for everyone.

The coastal area north of Barcelona is called the 'Costa Brava' - roughly translated as the rugged coast - and it is very scenic with many small sandy bays, quaint villages and larger holiday resorts such as Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar. There are regular bus and train services that serve the area. The sand is a bit grainy and the sea shelves quickly to deep water but these are fairly minor details. I think you would find plenty to keep both adults and kids happy.

You can go to Montserrat monastery for a day trip. Beautiful place! A 40 Euro combo ticket will buy you two way metro+train+cablecar ticket, entrance to the museum with a great collection, unlimited use of two funiculars and a lunch that include wine. The combo tickets can be purchased at tourist information kiosks in Barcelona. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187497-c79251/Barcelona:Spain:Day.Trip.To.Montserrat.html
