For those who tip extra ontop of auto tips.

Thought it would be fun and informative to start a thread for those who leave the auto tips but also tip extra to exchange ideas.

I always have a pocket full of singles for pier workers and bar staff. Like to give them a few bucks for their service.

My Steward I like to fold money up into animals and things that I leave on my bed with a note before going to dinner.

Waitstaff, I usually put their extra cash in an envelope with a note that last evening.

What do you do?

Guess I'm kind of boring, I just hand the money to anyone that has gone above for service. MDR staff on the last night.

Same for us. Usually tip the room steward on the first day. Does it make a difference? I believe so. We travel with our best friends who do not tip extra and they are always remarking that we seem to get better service from the steward than they do. We always have balcony cabins next to each other so we also have the same steward.

I always hand extra cash for great service, but may do something fun too. once we discovered Our room steward Collects foreign currency, so We brought some from Tunisia for him Which we visited on that cruise, as well as a bit from Egypt I had in my wallet, he was Over the moon.

I love the idea of folding tips into fun shapes! I am going to borrow that idea;). We do tip our steward the first day and I do think it makes a difference. If they are great (and they usually are) we tip the last day as well. We always give a big tip to the bartender at the bar we think we will be using most (usually casino) eearly on which has allowed us to enjoy very efficient service:). Last cruise we had a ton of heavy bags and my DH tipped the young woman who delivered them all- she was so surprised!

Even though it's a cute idea I sure hope this doesn't catch on. I can just imagine the poor room stewards spending hours on their limited free time unfolding dollar bills just to buy some stuff from the ship store or deposit them into the bank. ;)

Now if those cute origami animals were made from $50 dollar bills that might be a different story!:D

Imagine if your boss paid you in Oragami bills. I swear some think these people are pets. Or worse.

Have 2 handwritten notes from stewards thanking me for taking the time to make their days better. One has come and spent time in our home. We have plans to visit them in their home country as well.

Pets, no.....friends....yes.

My wife wore stripes on Royal, so we have some inside knowledge of how things are on a ship for the employees.

BTW, I take offense to your comment about anyone treating the staff like pets. Having that thought cross your mind is scary enough. Why would you come to that conclusion? When they leave a towel animal wearing my wife's sunglasses and my tie, are they treating me like a pet? No, they are trying to get a smile out of a customer. Just as I do when I leave them a note with a 10 spot folded into a ship. It is a way to break up the redundancy of opening up a cabin and cleaning it 7 days a week 6 months a year. I am sorry that you do not understand that. I am certainly glad I do it because it has help start a relationship. Some have bloomed into something that I enjoy.

Sorry that the first thought that comes to your mind is that someone is treating the staff like pets. Sad.

If we ask for anything extra....more pillows, more ice,etc we always tip in cash to the one that fulfilled this request.

But I will say that in our younger years we didn't know any better and on our first ever cruise we spent to much money and didn't budget correctly for tips. We felt very bad that we couldn't leave the requested amount in the envelopes but we did leave something. Anyone who has worked in Customer Service knows this is going to happen from time to time.

It made it so much easier for us when they started adding them on.

I also carry a lot of 1's to tip drink servers and others. We often leave smiley notes to our steward with a small bag of M&M's. On the last night we always put an extra tip in an envelope for each of our servers and room steward.

Sometimes when at a port I'll pick them each up a small trinket/key-chain of some sort. It's not in lieu of their pre-paid or extra tips, and it doesn't matter if they throw or give it away, what matters is they see passengers thinking and caring about them.

I like the Origami idea, but I doubt I can learn it well enough to do by next week.

Trinkets,,,,,,watch out, some on here will attack you for that!

Several cruises ago my wife was wearing Disney earrings (Tinkerbell I think) in the dining room. The assistant waitress remarked how cute they were and how her daughter loves Tinkerbell. Before leaving my wife offered them to the assistant. She reluctantly took them. 4 months later posted on my wife's Facebook was a picture of her daughter wearing the earrings.

As far as folding the money, I don't do anything real crazy and do it pre-cruise. Lots of websites on how to make them. I just stick to the easy ones as I do not want it to be difficult to unfold.

Folding money into strange shapes seems kind of silly to me.

One could say the same about folded towels.

To each their own. It is what makes the world a colorful place. Couldn't imagine living in a place where everyone did exactly what everyone else does.

I like the origami thing once in a while. It is neat. And the candy idea is neat too. I love candy, and I'm guessing other people love candy. Plus it doesn't take up a ton of room in their quarters. So Yeah that would be cool :) Who doesn't love getting a sweet treat that you don't normally get or getting a cute little present like a 10 folded as a ship? that is pretty cool

Do what you want I do not exactly care, but folding towels is part of their jobs.

Giving busy people money that has to be folded flat to be put away is making more work for them.

Now giving them say 10 singles in a pile with the top one folded in a cute way would make sense to me.

Hand written letters I have received state otherwise. I just unfolded a bill I had sitting on my dresser. At normal speed, it took me to the count of 11 Mississippi.

You crack me up tho! Thanks for the laugh.

We give our steward a tip at the beginning and at the end. We tip room service with singles. Our waitstaff and maitre d get their tips in envelopes. My DDs drew pictures on the envelopes that were special to that person who go the tip. That is on top of the auto tip.

I think the orgami idea is cute, but I'm not talented in that way.;)
