Splendor Out of NYC 1/20/14....Am I crazy?

Wow, so many negative comments about the cold, the choppy seas, itinerary, etc.

If I could get off of work during the school year, I would definitely go on this cruise!

Anyone who has ever sailed from NYC knows it's an incredible price.

We pay over $3000. for 3 of us every summer, so this would be a nice break for the bank account.

Too cold? I would rather be cold, standing on the balcony of a cruise ship, sailing out of the harbor than being cold, scraping ice off my car to go to work.

Rough seas? I would sleep like a baby! The more the ship rocks, the more I like it. I always hope for at least one bad weather sea day on our summer cruises.

Not great itinerary? Much better than staying home! And not everyone cruises for the ports anyway. Personally I wouldn't care if the ship went out to sea and just went in circles for 8 days before taking us back.

I do have my favorite ports, but I wouldn't pass this up just because of the ports.

As far as everything being crowded inside and nowhere to sit to eat.....I wonder if that poster went above the buffet to the rotisserie area?

We cruised in June, full ship and it was never busy up there. Plus the chicken and corn on the cob was delicious!

Limoguy, watch for the Quest in the funtimes. It's a late night "show" for adults only. FUNNY doesn't quite cover it! LOL

Before I booked options were either 1/12 or 1/20, I booked 1/12 only because DS has to be back in school 1/27. I notice that of all the January sailings, ours on 1/12 is the most active by a landslide. Someone arranged an hour cocktail party (11.50 pp, 6 under 21) unlimited drinks, aall included. Had to be prepaid but almost 100 folks are going that a paid. Several other events are planned. Why the lack of interest on the other sailings? Just curious.

Yes we did go to the upstairs Rotisserie and it was packed too. We did enjoy sail away, yes it was cold but not -36 like it is here today. I too enjoy the waves and can sleep like a baby with 12 ft. Waves but 20ft. is a different story. When the ship is shaking and sounding like it is breaking apart you can't sleep unless you wear ear plugs. My point is that I would rather spend a bit extra or go at a different time of year and I know now for the future. If I had been aware prior to booking I would have taken a different vacation. Why is it that when someone gives an honest opinion they get blasted. The OP asked for info, if what we experienced doesn't bother them then by all means go. Are we only supposed to post positives on here regardless of our experience?

We have the ability to cruise several times each year and we look for the best combination that works for us.

That is cruise in the winter out of Florida and go to port we enjoy.

That is our opinion and will stick to it and you should do what works for you.

I wasn't blasting you or anyone else.

I was giving MY opinion!

Bad day at work? Maybe you need a cruise! :D

Another "NOT A SPLENDOR FAN" here....:p

I was on her on 9/20/2013 out of NYC.

I was even given a FREE inside cabin for 2 on the upcoming 1/20/2014 Splendor sailing and turned it down....

This ship and my experiences made this an easy choice for me as it was just not a ship that I wanted to go on again, it was not for me.

However, I will say, it was my first Premier Casino cruise and they really do take good care of you with the perks.

I do not want to hijack the thread, but there are quite a few posters that just do not like the Splendor for whatever reason and are all entitled to our opinions.

OP, I hope that you enjoy your cruise and have an awesome time :)

I'll be on the Splendor Jan 28, 2014 with 3 other ladies. It can't be much colder than it is here in the capital district of NY and after a day or two at sea, I'm sure it wil feel balmy to us. I've been looking at reports and it apears that that the Bud Light hotel will be parked right next to where the Splendor comes in on the 28th. Hopefully the Super Bowl hoopla doesn't hinder our boarding Etc. We hired a car to drop us off at the port. Looking forward to several days of relaxation, fun, and warm weather which to this northerner, warm is 60's, 70's and 80's.

we were on the 1/4 sailing... and let's just say it was a 'unique cruising experience'.

they said it was 9 degrees in nyc when we left, with what, 8" of snow on the ground? and it was so windy the cold was biting during sail away, and they even had some of the open deck areas blocked off (not all).

it was kind of peculiar seeing fellow cruisers and crew alike walking around in winter jackets, or even the bartenders on deck during port stops, etc.

it did warm up a bit by about the time we hit south carolina, but it never was exactly 'warm' on the way to PC. PC too was rather chilly.

nassau was a bit warmer, probably low-mid 70s i'd guess? freeport maybe high 60s-low 70s i'd guess. i didn't exactly track the specific temperatures, but i can tell you it was a bit chilly for snorkeling (but we did anyway) :)

the other thing that was surprising was the movement of the ship, which was drastic at times, and NEVER stopped. i can understand on the way down, and back and have experienced the same (or worse) on carnival pride a few years ago... but splendor, even between pc -> nassau -> freeport, it NEVER stopped. the ship was constantly moving and creaking to the point that i wondered if they had deployed the stabalizers, or if they were functioning.

for the first time, i was still rocking for i guess 5 days after the cruise, the whole mal de debarquement syndrome sort of thing where you still feel you're on the ship.

for those cruising soon, i hope you have better luck with the weather! i did read the other day though, that they are expecting a return of that dreaded polar vortex, you can read about it here:

http://www.nj.com/weather-guy/index.ssf/2014/01/the_polar_vortex_will_return_to_nj_this_week_this_time_for_the_long_haul.html

it was also incredibly foggy on the 2 days back - mostly the last sea day, fog horn every 2 minutes! (although that did not really affect the cruise per se, with exception of not being able to even see the ocean 50' past the balcony lol)

onboard, they never did open the dome over the mid lido pool (good thing!). the hot tubs there were mostly open since they're indoors on deck 10. the hot tubs aft weren't open the first few days but were afterward. i don't think they ever opened that aft pool. the mid lido pool was also closed intermittently at times but eventually would open - sometimes they had to close it when the motion made it slosh up and down. i didn't go in myself but was told by family it was always pretty chilly.

i / we made the best of it, and i'm more an inside guy anyway. made lots of new friends and we all pretty much hung out indoors most of the time. we did make use of our balconies often, albeit many times with our winter coats or sweaters on. not sure i'd do an early january cruise out of new york again though, due to the cold and motion.

The cruise is what you make of it. I could care less about Port Canaveral, Nassau and Freeport and probably wouldn't even get off the ship. I was on the Miracle that left NY 10-28-12 right before the hurricane and if I can do that then there isn't much more to complain about. Never saw or was on a ship in wind or waves like that before and even though there were a couple of "moments", it really wasn't all that bad.

Like a few others said, just getting away from work, my computer, my cell phone for 8 days would be enough to make me have a very relaxing and enjoyable trip. It's January, it's Winter, it's supposed to be cold. I don't see how anyone that booked these Winter cruises for the low, low prices and then are going to complain that Carnival didn't give them tropical temperatures the moment they boarded in NY or it wasn't warm enough during the cruise. It sure beats being home and having to work.
