Hi Guys.

Normally cruise with NCL. I have been looking at doing the 12 Night Grand Mediterrean Cruise aboard the Silouhette from Rome to Venice. I am nearly convinced to jump ship to Celebrity. Wondering if there is anyone out there that can convince me to change. Is it a great itinerary and is the ship and food as great as I am reading.

Would be looking at a Balcony Stateroom midships and would you be able to recommend one. New to Celbrity and want to try them out. The ship looks absolutely georgeous.

Cheers Bob & Chris ( Downunder ).:):):)

Our first cruise ever was on NCL, and since then we have tried other lines, and frankly would never go back to NCL. Celebrity is our line of choice now. There is just no comparison between the two lines in terms of food, atmosphere and service. That being said NCL is a very casual line, and Celebrity more elegant, so if you don't like dressing for dinner (smart casual most nights and formal wear for the 2 or 3 formal evenings you'll have) you may not like that aspect of the cruise.

You dont have to do formal, you can eat in speciality restaurants, or in room, buffet, many options. Celebrity is fabulous, I would say try it and make your own mind up! :)

True, but NCL is VERY casual. We often saw shorts and flip-flops in the MDR at dinner. That type of casual wouldn't fly on Celebrity at dinner, except in the buffet.

I have not been on the Silhouette yet (will be in Jan 2014). However, from what I have read on these boards, there is a smoking area on deck 5 port side. Therefore, if there is a possibility that you are bothered by the smoke, then book a cabin starboard.

The only other advise I can give is to choose a cabin with cabins above and below it - more likely will be quiet.

DH and I love Celebrity and I suspect you will too.

Hi Bob and Chris,

We were on the Celebrity Silouhette 3 weeks ago to the Adriatic from Venice to Rome and had a fabulous time. The ship and food were excellent. We usually book with Princess, but we do prefer Celebrity now. We were in cabin 6158, which was a midship obstructed balcony, but even though the lifeboats were directly below us, looking out straight was not obstructed at all. Our friends were in cabin 6156 and these 2 cabins were hump cabins, but cabin 6156 had a larger balcony and would book either of these cabins in a heartbeat again. Very quiet and close to the elevator. You can't go wrong on the Silhouette.

As far as formal nights, our husbands wore sport jackets with and without a tie, and there was no problem at all.

The itinerary was intense, but so worth it. Loved every minute of it.

Ellen:)

I was fortunate enough to do a B2B on the Silhouette. The first leg was the 15 night trans-atlantic and the second leg was the 12 night cruise that you are looking at, Rome to Venice. The ship is incredible, very beautiful, easy to get around, lots to offer and an amazing crew. I am sure you will not be dissappointed with the change to Celebrity. They are our line of choice, we have cruised with Royal, Princess and Carnival as well and even though they were all great cruises you can't beat what Celebrity has to offer. I was on the ship for 27 nights and was never bored or looking for things to do, I wish I could have done 27 more! Enjoy your holiday no matter what you choose!

I have sailed on Celebrity, Princess, RCL, Carnival and NCL. Celebrity is my favorite. In my opinion there is not comparison between Celebrity and NCL. Only sailed on NCL once and that was enough for me. The food was horrible and the staff mostly unfriendly. I have seen some great deals on NCL but not even that can tempt me. I think once you try Celebrity you will love it.

We have sailed NCL, Princess, Carnival & Celebrity and I don't think you can even compare NCL to Celebrity. NCL is very casual and we really felt that the quality was not there. While we did have fun and enjoyed the NCL cruises Celebrity's service, food & atmosphere were just far superior to us. We did not find the food horrible, it was good, just not the same quality as some of the other cruise lines.

To me, NCL is fine when we are taking the kids to the Bahamas (coming out of NY it is convenient and affordable for us) but when we want something a step above and are traveling just the 2 of us it is Celebrity or Princess all the way. I also have to say we were much more impressed with Carnival than we expected to be the few times we sailed with them.

Everybody has a different experience and things that are important to them when cruising but I don't think you will be disappointed with Celebrity.

Thanks all posters. We really appreciate your feedback. Sounds like Celebrity ticks all our boxes and will book our Med cruise now.

Thanks Ellen for the advice on the cabins. Appreciate that.

NCL can not compare with Celebrity. We have been on the Solstice, Silhouette, and the Eclipse in the S class Celebrity ships. In four weeks we will be on the Reflection. We have done extensive reviews with loads of pictures on all of them. You can find the Silhouette under our Venice to Venice cruise at www.thepreismans.com. Enjoy.

We are frequent NCL cruisers and took our first Celebrity cruise on Silhouette last year. We sail Silhouette again in a week. We found the Celebrity cruising experience to be more elegant without feeling stuffy. When we sail NCL, we only sail in suites because we appreciate the additional perks/attention. We sailed Concierge Class on Celebrity and we felt just as special as we do on NCL in a suite. We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the Silhouette and would highly recommend the ship.

I haven't been able to figure out what the benefits of a suite on Celebrity, but everyone seems to have the same opinion as you. What makes it so special?

Mate,

we LOVE the Silhouette. Cruised her a few times.

Top ship, top staff, top service, super Captain on the first cruise, many quirky decorative items around the ship.

The only negative thing (but it easily avoided) are the rediculous prices for spa treatments. (but then again, we are used to the prices in SE-Asia).

Enjoy the cruise and start putting money away for the next one. :)

For us its the size of the suites, the decor, the amenities (link below), but most importantly the butler. The service he provides, the attention to details, is superb. Getting a table in a sold out restaurant, laying the breakfast table in the cabin. He takes care of everything so you don't have to worry about anything...

I agree with everyone! The ship is beautiful, the staff are exceptional, the shows and performers are excellent and the captain is unbelievable. We have never experienced such a personable gentleman before from humorous skits to his "Ask the Captain Questions" session! Enjoy!:)

It's likely that the age demographic is much older on Celebrity, and the entertainment probably duller.

In evenings on Celebrity people wear smart dress (no shorts/ flip-flops in the evening - not even in buffet).

The port of calls on the itinerary are wonderful, meaning busy tiring port days.

Food good, staff and service great. Almost zero cigarette smoke. Wonderfully clean.

Understated smart minimalist contemporary ship styling.

Hi all,

I am VERY new to this forum and truly have NO where to start. My daughter (who will be almost 22 when we go next summer) and I are looking to book a cruise to see Italy. We did some research, but it's SOOO confusing. We looked at Celebrity and so far that seems to be the best value and best itinerary. Any suggestions, opinions, helpful hints would be GREATLY appreciated.

I love Silhouette and NCL does not compare to Celebrity for a number of reasons. One of the areas that Celebrity is catching up to NCL is the suites in the Haven area. Probably one reason why Celebrity is instituting a restaurant for suites.

Food definitely goes to Celebrity both MDR and Specialties. Entertainment goes to NCL. For me the smoking policy is one reason to stay with Celebrity, no indoor smoking especially in Casino. On NCL the casino seemed like a smokestack.
