Recent Gem Cruisers, Did she ever "back in"?

No backing in. Bow first or sideways with the thrusters, but backing in leaves the bridge "blind". You do get to see where you've been!!!

Depending on the port, a ship may well "back in" to the dock. The Breakaway, for example, "backed in" to the dock in Nassau on Nov. 6. Here she is backing in to the dock, where she winds up across from the NCL Sky:

Day 5:

Nassau, Bahamas. As the ship docked that morning, we were thrilled to see they were BACKING in, which gave us Front row seats from our balcony and a fabulous view of the Island!!

Yes, the Gem most DEFINITELY backs in to Nassau, I just pulled this post from my 2012 Gem review

Since the Gem leaves NY, she will "back" into the East River, you will have a splendid view of NEW JERSEY until you get underway.

You will hear one long whistle for Vessel Underway followed by three short for I am operating astern propulsion. From your balcony if you look down you should see an Officer with a radio sticking his head out communicating with the bridge.

Gem Bow in at NYC port from the level the gang way is on.

Just backed out of the slip (88) to the right of the Carnival ship:

I'm going in 3 weeks and need to get better pictures :)

We have been on the GEM and other NCL ships where they have backed in to ports. It is nice to sit out and view the islands. One time we backed in to the front of another ship and we had a great view of their bridge  and they had a great view of us!

What in the world???

sorry to hijack...did you get photos of that?:eek::eek:

I think your spell check is having a mind of it's own...East River is really the Hudson River...back on topic, January 2013 the Gem backed into St. Maarten for us as to bunker there. As far as any of the other itineraries for the Gem depends on when they need to bunker
