Cruising in the rain?

I made the mistake of looking at extended forecasts...always a bad thing, they are never right and then you end up worrying unnecessarily. We are arriving in New Orleans on the 13th and they are showing rain rain and more rain for that weekend. Fingers crossed that the weather man continues to be completely wrong! :-)

it really depends on if it is a day at port or sea. We were on a Carnival cruise a couple of years ago and pulled into Key West... As it turned out, it was the day they had the highest rainfall in a 24-hour period. Not much going on in the ship when in port, but most people got off anyway. So in port, there were a few things to do on the ship but it was a very peaceful day. If at sea, there are always events happening indoors.

I suspect that if it rains during a sea day that my DH and I will be doing a pub crawl! The kids (teenagers) will probably find a quiet corner and read.

I think as the "planner" of this vacation I feel pressure to ensure everyone has a great time and everything is perfect. This is the kids Xmas gift this year so I'm really hoping the weather cooperates. I'm a bit of a control freak which is why weather can be so frustrating, it's completely out of my control! :)

The weather man is often wrong here in the South as our weather can always be unpredictable. This morning I woke up to temp of 70 when it is supposed to be in the mid to upper 40's at this time of year. And most of the year they always throw in a chance of showers. I would wait until the day before and look at the weather again to see if it is a front moving through. If so then it could possibly rain all day. Just get some of those cheap ponchos and don't miss the sights in New Orleans.

Thanks Donna, I will. I'm really looking forward to showing the kids New Orleans. Both my husband and I have been there separately on business but never together, and never with the kids. Bring on the Beignets!

If it is raining too hard to go to the regular Café Du Monde just go to the Riverwalk Mall which is next to the cruise terminal, lots of interesting shops there. There is a Café du Monde in there where you can get Beignets and Café Au Lait.

Oh perfect, thank you! I have two teenage daughters, they will never complain about going to a mall!;)

It only rained a lil on us in Jamaica. We did tubing. A lil chilly at first for like 5 seconds. Then it was great! Once we were done tubing the rain slowed and sun came out. Now one thing I did notice that when ot rains the seas seem to be a bit choppier? Maybe thats just

what happened to me who knows... happy cruising! !

Our last cruise out of Tampa (a few years ago) and it rained the whole day on our last sea day. We were late pulling into the Port of Tampa because of fog. We did things that they had going on around the ship. Trivia, bingo, etc, etc. We also used some of the time to pack our luggage and get it ready for the next day. You are on a cruise - you will find something to do - even if it is napping!!! Have a great time.

We had rain and wind on our July 2012 cruise out of Galveston and since we aren't pool people it didn't really bother us that much. Just had to spend more time in the casino which I'm sure raised Carnival's profit margin. :D

They should be all set then. We can't go to New Orleans without going into the mall, my teenage daughter loves it. Depending on what day you are there, if there is a cruise leaving you can see the ship docked there and watch them load supplies/luggage from the food court area. I forgot, pretty good food in that food court as well, some fairly good seafood. http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2013/10/riverwalk_developers_announce.html

Recently back from a Western Caribbean cruise rom the week of 11/23-11/30. It poured for our Roatan port. We still went on a tour, and were in a vehicle so rather well protected from most of the weather. The guide told us the next few months is their rainy season (last year the same time the weather was beautiful so we were pretty lucky then).

We had wind gusts that were well over 65mph with avg winds probably around 25-35mph. In the outdoor market, the wind caught one of the ceiling fans and tore the blades off and it went sailing. The upper levels of the ship was closed off due to high winds on our way over to Costa Maya. The stabilizers were put to good use - though most of the wind was from the front.

Hit your local walmart and grab some of those pocket ponchos you can find in the camping section. Can't hurt to keep a few on hand, and they won't take up much room. Keep in mind your pants and shoes will get wet even though the rest of you will keep fairly dry. We still had a blast.

Last year our downpour port was Cozumel. We did a cooking excursion and stayed under a huge canopy the whole time anyway. This time - we still got some pictures of the country side - just half of those pictures are through raindrops on the windows. It did stop raining after a while, which is pretty much when the wind really kicked into gear.

Make your trip fun though, no matter what the weather turns out to be. It's still an amazing opportunity. :)

Was in NOLA over Halloween. The mall is closed due to renovations.

I've never been on a cruise before and our family is booked on the Sunshine on December 15th. I'd love to hear what everyone does on a cruise when faced with rainy weather. I'm hoping that we get the typically beautiful weather that the Caribbean often has, but one must be prepared! So how do you spend your rainy days?

Still lots to do. Some ships have a covered pool. Part of almost all of the pool decks are covered as well. TONS of places to eat and drink and play cards and read and shop and plenty of other things to do inside.

Enjoy your cruise!:D
