H2Otstr Posted December 8, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 8, 2013 We have been in Nuremberg since Friday afternoon, four of us traveling together. The hotel called the ship for us to confirm the docking area and also arranged for a taxi to take us to the port. The taxi ride was about 20 minutes and cost about 20 €. Upon arrival to the ship The staff greeted us, took our luggage and escorted us to the reception desk. Our passports were taken, information put in the computer and our photos were taken for ID purposes. We then went to the lounge for lunch. There were two kinds of lasagna, soup, sandwiches, salads and desserts offered. Coffee , tea (hot and cold), wine, beer and soft drinks were all available. Then at 2 pm we were given our room keys and escorted to our rooms. Our luggage was already in the room and we were given an explanation about our room, where to store the luggage (under the bed), where the safe was located, and how to use the room key. One end of the key opens the door and the other end has a UPC which we will scan at the reception desk every time we leave or come back to the ship. This procedure is new for us; other ships all had paper boarding cards that we had to get before leaving. At 3:15 till 5:00 pm tea was served in the lounge. Again, there was tea, coffee, pastries, and small sandwiches. Tonight we will have a safety talk at 6:00 pm, followed by a port talk at 6:45 pm and dinner at 7:00 pm. If anyone has any specific question I will try to provide an answer. Looking forward to cruising and visiting all the Cristmas markets.

bobalink Posted December 9, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 9, 2013 Thanks for taking us along with your "live" reports. Is this your first time on Uniworld? What other river cruise lines have you traveled with? How does Uniworld compare? Have a wonderful vacation!
H2Otstr Posted December 9, 2013 Author #7 Share Posted December 9, 2013 Thanks for the update H2O. We are planning on the Danube holiday markets market cruise for 2014 on the Beatrice. Post photos if you can and enjoy! Won't be able to upload photos until I get home 😔. Internet is too slow and spotty here. We were told last night that only so many people can get on their electronic devices at one time and if we were not actively using our device to turn OFF the WiFi on our devices. suspaul Posted December 9, 2013 #8 Share Posted December 9, 2013 Sounds like a busy day in Nuremberg Sharon. Hope the crowds have subsided from the weekend, it should be much more enjoyable. Are you going to visit the documentation center? Enjoy your last day, this trip, in Nuremberg. Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app Left the ship thus morning at about 9:15 for a drive-around tour and we departed the bus at the Nuremberg Castle. We had some time to look around outside and then we had a 45 minute walk down to town. For those who decided they did not want to tackle the steep, slippery cobble stones on the walk down the bus took those people to the markets. We did not get out to visit any of the sites; an optional WWII tour was offered from 1:30 to 5:30. Markets were still very crowded today. The weather has been rainy all day, from light sprinkles to heavy downpours. Shuttle busses were running every hour, with the last pick up being at 5:00 pm. Tonight is the Captain's Welcome Reception in about 10 minutes.

Rare steamboats Posted December 10, 2013 #13 Share Posted December 10, 2013 Sharon, I just read about an accident in the Nuremberg lock at 10:30 pm yesterday night. It says 140 passengers and next port Bamberg. So I hope it´s not the River Queen. According to the news account the pilot house hasn´t been retracted enough and there´s at least a damage of 100,000 Euros. No injuries reported. It happened when the ship was about to leave the lock. The pilot house hit the lock gate. steamboats

I didn't even know that anything happened until this morning at breakfast. The CD held a meeting at 8:30 and we were told that there was some damage to the ship, we would not sail, and would be bussed to Bamberg. The bus ride took about an hour and everyone was given money for lunch. We had the whole day to tour, shop and enjoy the city and the markets. We just got back a little while ago and will set sail at 5:30 this evening. Thanks for the updated information 😄😄😄.

H2Otstr Posted December 12, 2013 Author #18 Share Posted December 12, 2013 We are now back on schedule, docked a few minutes ago in Wurzburg. Our schedule was slightly altered because of the accident with the wheel house when we were just outside Nuremberg. Yesterday we had a 1.5 hour bus ride to Rothenberg. We had a guided tour and then had the rest of the day on our own. The total time we were in Rothenberg was about 5 hours, which was plenty of time to shop, eat and look around. We were also given a coupon for 3% off any purchase at Katherine Wolfhart stores, which there are three in Rothenburg. Rothenberg is a beautiful city. We then had an hour bus ride back to the boat. Uniworld has gone out of their way to accommodate us. There have been a couple of meetings to explain to us what is going on and how our schedule has been altered. Most of all, the attitude of the cruisers has been great. Everyone that I have observed us just going with the flow. I have not heard any grumbling at all. The weather has been cold, but no rain. I brought way too many warm weather clothes (long underwear) and not enough clothes that could be layered. Many people are wearing hats and ear coverings, scarves, gloves and boots. I have New Balance walking shoes and they are good enough. There are plenty of places selling shoes, hats and scarves, gloves , etc. if one needs to purchase anything. H2Otstr Posted December 14, 2013 Author #20 Share Posted December 14, 2013 Today we are in Frankfurt and it is our last day of the trip;we leave tomorrow morning. We had a 1.5 hour walking tour and then we went off on our own. The Christmas Markets here are huge. Today has been a very cold, rainy, snowy day. We were going to stay in town, but the rain was coming down too hard and the markets were getting more crowded, so we walked back to the ship to have lunch and rest a little before we have to start packing. Our flight leaves tomorrow at 9:45. We have to have our luggage outside our door at 5:30 and we will depart at 6:30 am. We were told that it is about a 20 minute ride to the airport. H2Otstr Posted December 17, 2013 Author #22 Share Posted December 17, 2013 (edited) Uniworld's River Queen. We were in Room 311. Luggage was stored under each side of the bed, enough room for 2 suitcases on each side. Bathroom was quite small. Shower was very tiny. There was a large bottle of shampoo and creamy body wash mounted on the wall in the shower. Water was very hot, pressure was just OK. There was a large bottle of hand wash and body lotion in the bathroom. Uniworld has "Gone Green" so there are no longer small bottles of shampoo or body lotion. There was also a couple nail files and shower caps in the bathroom. The hairdryer was very powerful. Not a lot of room between the chairs and the bed. We used the chairs to hang our coats. The drawers in the vanity were quite small. Because Uniworld has Gone Green, there are no plastic water bottles anymore. We were provided two metal water bottles for our excursions and we could take them home with us. There was also a large glass bottle of drinking water in the room. As you can see, the closet area is divided in four quadrants. There is no place to hang anything long (I like to hand my slacks, not double them over on the hangar). My husband's clothes were too long to clear the bottom. There were a couple shelves and the safe on the right side. LOTS of hangars, though :) . orchestrapal Posted December 17, 2013 #25 Share Posted December 17, 2013 Wow! Scary small! Just booked a cruise on this ship...now having second thoughts. Wow scary small is an understatement. We could never do this for one night let alone a whole cruise. Why do they put that ugly wallpaper up which makes the tiny room even more claustrifobic????
