Smoking In Room?

Hi all! We will be taking our first cruise in May 2014. It will be myself, my husband, and our two children. We are also taking my mother, who will have her own stateroom. My mother is a smoker, and we have inside rooms. I was talking to her the other day and she informed me that she still planned on smoking in the room, and that she would just "turn the vent on, and spray some room spray". I am very upset by this, because we are paying for the rooms with our credit cards. I told her there is a $250 fee if you do this and she seems to think she will be able to just get away with it!!!! We are going on the Sunshine and will be on the 8th floor. Are there any outside smoking areas near there? Also, is there a way to change our credit card information for her room to her own credit card? Thanks!

I would make it clear that I was not paying for it!

 

I do know that people smoke in the cabins still as on my last cruise I could smell it coming through the vent at night.

The smell of smoke woke me up several nights and I checked to see if it was coming under the door.

I talked to the steward and he said that it comes through the vent and he could not do anything about it.

 

Perhaps other smokers could tell you if they were charged.

Maybe a hefty tip to the steward and he could bring in the ozone de-stink machine on the last day or something.

 

You can change the credit cards at the purser's desk.

I usually do it right when I get on, but you could do it later in the evening.

Oh Boy...get ready to pay the $250. You can change the Sail & Sign Credit card to your Mom's and that way she will be charged the fine. Your Mom can go down one deck to 7 and go to the outside deck at the front of the ship or up go up one deck to Lido. You may want to see if you can change to deck 7 close to the front. Good luck and have a great trip.

And let her know that there is a fine involved as well. I think the going rate is $250. I'm sure someone will correct me if I have the amount wrong. I don't smoke so never been fined.

The smell will surely seep into the halls, as the gap at the bottom of the floor in the door is pretty wide.

 

Tell her to brinbg cash or a credit card, as she will be fined $250 a day in cleaning charges.

Also I would not worry about her being fined, If Carnival were to enforce that rule the smokers would jump ship. Carnival cant enforce their own rule .

You read countless posts from people who have gotten away with smuggling.... very few from those caught because of the embarrassment.

 

Same with smoking. People will be very hesitant to admit they knowingly violated the rules.

I would also look at the option of her upgrading her room to a balcony so that she could have her own personal smoking area. I can't believe people like that. It doesn't matter what the rules are or if other people in adjoining cabins are affected. I hope that there is no one with asthma or other respiratory illness in the cabins next door. If it were me, I would tell her that she needs to put the room on her credit card and I would get it and go online and change it myself.

I smoke....I have been on 3 cruises since the new policy went in to play and have NEVER ONCE broke the rules. I always pay more for my balcony and use it as such.

 

Your Mom and anyone else that breaks policy should be fined.

 

Like anything in life....a few bad apples will spoil it for the rest of us.

 

I do believe that MOST smokers are not the Pariah's that we are made out to be:rolleyes:.

No point in smokers bragging, their not smuggling their smokes on board.

If I was in the room next to your Mother I would complain until she stopped smoking and faced several fines . I am asthmatic and I stopped booking balcony rooms because of smokers so there is no way I would put up with it in a non smoking area .

It would be cheaper for her to upgrade to a balcony than keep paying the multiple fines she is going to get.

I find her attitude appalling, since you are paying and run the risk of being charged a fine, she's a bit cavalier about the whole thing. Do require her to add her own credit card for expenses because you will be charged. I smoke and always get a balcony, I would never think of smoking inside. If my balcony neighbors complain, I adjust accordingly and do not smoke when they are outside.

Once I had neighbors that had asked me day one to refrain from smoking. I put out my cigarette and explained that I would still be smoking, just not when they were outside. Several times heard them say "she's outside again" from in their cabin and run outside. Several times I put it out and went about my business only to hear them go back in giggling as soon as I did. The last time I heard the remark and they ran out, I put out my cigarette and lit my DH's cigar. Yes, I was giggling!!!

I'm pretty sure that $250 would at least come close if not completely covering the cost toupgrade to balcony room. Then she'd have a place to smoke AND enjoy the balcony too.

When I still smoked I thought things like room spray, opening vents, mints for my breath etc. actually made a difference! Its because my sense of smell was basically gone.

 

I would make it really clear to mom that she will be paying the charges.

I suppose that I am just a mean person but I'd cancel the cruise for her if she cannot abide by the no smoking in room rule!! IF you cannot afford a balcony for her or she won't pay for the upgrade then just let her stay home!!

No offense to you, but your mom REALLY ticks me off! As someone who gets horrible headaches being around cigarette smoke, if I had to be in a room next to her or stay in the room after her I would be sick the entire cruise. She needs to just go to a designated smoking area or change to a balcony.
