slidergirl Posted January 5, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 5, 2014 An inaccuracy: Not all arrive at the bottom and take the funiculars or hike to the top. You CAN drive up the road to the town. There is a large public parking lot right where the funicular lets off at the top. I will go along with the comments on the Duomo - you gotta get up close to see all the intricate work. -Lew- Posted January 5, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted January 5, 2014 An inaccuracy: Not all arrive at the bottom and take the funiculars or hike to the top. You CAN drive up the road to the town. He didn't write that... He wrote: Visitors can then drive or take an elevator or escalator to the medieval upper town. But my preferred mode is joining the locals to climb the town's natural fortress hill on the slick funicular, which deposits riders about a 10-minute walk from the heart of town. Everyone does initially arrive at the bottom, whether they arrive by train, car or other mode of transportation. Lew
slidergirl Posted January 6, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 6, 2014 I never felt like I arrived at a "bottom" anywhere in Orvieto. I got off the A1 at the Orvieto exit, onto the SS205 road and up to the top of the tufa. I went through a town at the bottom, but followed the "Orvieto" signs to the top… Let's just say it wasn't the best written piece: " All travelers start at the bottom, where train passengers disembark and drivers can leave their cars for free. Visitors can then drive or take an elevator or escalator to the medieval upper town. But my preferred mode is joining the locals to climb the town's natural fortress hill on the slick funicular, which deposits riders about a 10-minute walk from the heart of town."
