Rgrgirl0307 Posted January 13, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 13, 2014 We are sailing the Fantasy March 8, I just read a review they said they received free champagne at sail away, but they were not sure if this was standard practice or if it was special because it was Christmas time. I've cruised before, but never been on the lido at sail away so was wondering your thoughts/experiences! Thanks!
Kato27 Posted January 13, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 13, 2014 If u buy it, you can drink whatever u want on the Lido on sail away:)

It is not typical to have FREE champagne at sail away.
gapearl Posted January 13, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 13, 2014 That definitely must have been special for Christmas. I've never seen free champagne served at sailaway.

Rgrgirl0307 Posted January 13, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted January 13, 2014 I did not think so either, but was just wondering and I knew that I could get an answer here. Thanks!
Thommy_Boy Posted January 13, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 13, 2014 The only time I have seen the free champagne was on my Christmas Cruise for 2012. I think it is only for the special sailings not an cruise occurance.
JRock59 Posted January 13, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 13, 2014 I've seen it at Christmas, heard they do it for New Year's and also witnessed it on the revised Elation sailing back in October. So it is a "special" event.
TwinPrincessMermaids Posted January 13, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 13, 2014 New Cruisers: Many times I have walked on board, heard my CHIME of my SnS card, and wala! A waiter hands me a pretty fruity drink. It would appear to be a "welcome aboard!" to new cruisers. Don't drink it unless you want to buy it, because its NOT free. As soon as they would hand it to me, they would say "Give me your Sail and Sign card", and whenever they ask for that YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT. So don't fall for this unless a DOD of the first thing you are ready to pay for when you board.

Other than a special occasion like Christmas or New Year's, the only free beverages available at sail-away are water, coffee, tea, milk, or lemonade from the buffet area. Colorado Kat Posted January 13, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 13, 2014 At sailaway, there are waiters all over carrying trays of drinks. But nothing is free! It's a bit misleading.
michelle1836 Posted January 13, 2014 #12 Share Posted January 13, 2014 it was my cruise and it was definitely free. we sailed on 12/26-12/31. im guessing it was for the holiday. never saw it on any other cruises
ibcruiseing Posted January 13, 2014 #13 Share Posted January 13, 2014 When we did the cruise for Christmas week, it was free when we boarded had never had it on any other cruise we have taken, not offered on the Thanksgiving cruise this year. Think it must be Christmas and New Years weeks (for the prices they charge for this prime time) LOL

MicksMom Posted January 14, 2014 #15 Share Posted January 14, 2014 We were on The Triumph Dec 26-30th. Champagne was free flowing from about noon til sail away. Lido buffet, Lido deck & all around the casino & shops. We each had at least 6 glasses. If they didn't see a drink in your hand, they were handing you one. We joked that everyone received champagne since it was our Platimun cruise. :D
DebJ14 Posted January 14, 2014 #16 Share Posted January 14, 2014 Back in the old days (80's and early 90's) Carnival served everyone a glass of Champagne on formal nights at dinner and they did a formal toast. They haven't done this in probably 20 years. This was either a special holiday event or the people bought champagne. On our Princess cruise in December our steward came to the room with 2 small bottles of Champagne and flutes on a silver tray shortly after we boarded. Turns out is was a suite perk we were not expecting. Nice touch and decent champagne too!
jetskier Posted January 14, 2014 #17 Share Posted January 14, 2014 We had it on the Oct 5th......changed to Oct 7th sailing of the Elation which then became a cruise to nowhere. But then they made a lot of folks mad. 1) No Cheers program (suppose to be offered on 3-night or longer sailings) 2) No Past Guest party (this cruise was originally a 5-nighter that was shortened due to TS Karen) Dave

On the Glory last month, we got champagne for a toast on both elegant nights as part of the new American Feast dining. It was nice to see the return of the champagne toast! Colorado Kat Posted January 14, 2014 #19 Share Posted January 14, 2014 Last week on the Dream, we all got a glass of champagne for dinner one night. Can't recall if it was an Elegant night. Assumed it was because we missed 2 ports.
Terri0305 Posted January 16, 2014 #20 Share Posted January 16, 2014 I went on the Magic New Years Day 2012 with my aunt, uncle and cousin and we received free champagne on the Lido and later on that night in Vibes nite club and to me it wasn't all that great but everyone has different tastes. They did have a lot of drink specials my guesses were because of the holiday, my fiancé and I are sailing 9-14-2014 on the exact same cruise and we're both occasional drinkers and with him being a newbie we're splurging a bit not that much! LoL. We're not big soda drinkers either so the water, tea and lemonade suits us just fine

The prices are crazy high but it is the only time we can go. This year we are doing the NY eve cruise!
grantbob Posted January 16, 2014 #22 Share Posted January 16, 2014 Our 5-day Elation cruise this past October was shortened to 3 days due to tropical storm Karen closing the port. We had free champagne on embarkation.
Lerin Posted January 17, 2014 #23 Share Posted January 17, 2014 Free drinks upon embarkation or sail away are petty common on most all cruise lines...except Carnival.

Fun cruise, our first time on a 4 day from Galveston and worth the cost.
