ummmmm

no deep water port or cruise terminal????

A city that wants to host cruise ships needs to accept a significant capital ($) investment and that ASSUMES the geography supports a deep draft ship already ... and even then there is no gar'tee of success because the terminal must be easily accessible .. in other words reachable easily ... by air especially.

case in point:

Mobile Alabama invested in a cruise ship terminal downtown and managed to latch a Carnival ship for a time .... they already had deep channels .... but today who sails from Mobile? It was and still is not an easy place to fly in to, so ..... in the total picture a poor port

Found this online.

"The Biloxi Port channel has a depth of 3.7 meters (12 feet). The average depth at berth in Biloxi Port is from 2.4 to 3.7 meters (8 to 12 feet). The largest vessel that Biloxi Port can accommodate is 52.4 meters (172 feet)."

Plus, you need separation from other cruise ports. Really, Miami and Fort Lauderdale are the only two close ports. San Diego, LA and SF are also close but hours of drive apart and each has good local population base, other attractions and airports to support cruises.

Lets think about what makes a cruise port. First you need an adequate deep water port with enough shelter to properly berth large ships. Biloxi does not have that. And then you need a decent airport within a reasonable distance to serve cruise ship passengers...and Biloxi does not have that. So all Biloxi needs to do is dredge out a large port, build several large piers, build a cruise terminal building, build a new airport and get some airlines, etc. Does not sound too reasonable :)
