Help for parking in Manhattan on Super Bowl Sunday

FYI - just saw this updated alert from NBC New 4 - per notices from NYC DOT

In short, avoid & go around the Times Square/Broadway core area, including SB Blvd. - Pier 88 and 90 area will be gridlocked, it seemed.

Limited access to the Lincoln Tunnel - so that probably means security checkpoints and/or road blocks, ugh !! Stay tuned & allow extra travel time. For folks on the Jersey heading into NY this Sunday, that leaves the Holland Tunnel and the GW Bridge - taking the GW across & down the Henry Hudson Pkwy south is probably easier, IMO. http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Super-Bowl-Road-Closures-NYC-Traffic-Gridlock-242248141.html

This ain't no fun - not going anywhere near those venue ourselves, so we will be in our "lockdown" mode at home - partying instead, cozy & warm. :D

mking8288 the rout looks good all the way across 125th street to west side hi way.now we need to sneek into park right at 670 west 43rd tween 11th ave and 12th ave.........would you suggest a 11th ave. drop in ...thats where it looks tight or will it all be gone by mid sunday morning

dmdrace, that 125th routing is a favorite shortcut used by Carmel drivers when we used them from Queens to Pier 88 or 90 - took just 30 minutes from Whitestone/Malba on weekend morning in light traffic, well worth that TBTA toll vs. crawling on 57th or 55th cross-town.

Please keep in mind anything & everything subject to change this Sunday, but, using this approach - keep left instead as you approach the last exit on the elevated portion of the Joe DiMaggio (new name, us "old" boys growning up then still fondly called it the West Side) Hwy for the turn onto 56th Street, bear right onto 11th Avenue going south, stay away from 12th Avenue direct to the Pier as you are heading for parking. ** Beware of & watchout for nasty potholes opening up wide with all the ice melt/rock salt used lately as temps begin to warm up a bit, was on Northern Blvd this afternoon near Steinway & almost sank into a "good" one, luckily midday traffic was cool & avoided it evasively.

Keep right as you head south on 11th Avenue once you are in the 40's for turn onto 43rd Street (UPS "depot" is on the block) for the garage entrance (that's behind/building next to the Chinese Consulate on the corner of 12th & 42nd.)

Enjoy the cruise & good luck traveling this Sunday - take care of the Breakaway as we are planning to sail her soon. Washy Washy, Happy Happy.

Just an update

It is a NIGHTMARE around the piers. Not so much the traffic but the security to get into the area. They are checking EVERY vehicle with dogs, mirrors, questions. One of my drivers is trying to deliver about 8 pallets of cheese to the Bud Light hotel commissary. He has been in the area since 6AM and is just now getting escorted for unloading. He said the traffic is jammed up big time on 11th, 12th, the cross streets, etc. All for the security checks because he sees nothing else in the way (wreck, broke down vehicle, etc.)

It may ease a little later in the week. He just told me ALL deliveries except booze HAVE to be at the piers by noon tomorrow. Whether this holds or not, who knows. IF they run out of caviar or exotic cheeses, I am sure there will be deliveries and more traffic. There are camera crews setting up all over the place because of all the celebrity action for the next 3 nights concerts..

And the construction crews with all the trucks, forklifts and cranes erecting all the stuff around the Intrepid are almost done, so a lot of that equipment will be out of the way and traffic gone.

Now the GOOD NEWS. It is not bad on the NJ side. Just sent another driver up 120/Patterson Plank Rd which runs parallel to the stadium. He had never been in the area before and was up 120 to Empire and back down to Exit 16W after loading 4 pallets in about an hour. So it is not too bad around the stadium yet. Although getting into the stadium for deliveries is a royal pain. They even brought in a magnetometer big enough to run semi trucks through (must have borrowed it from the Newark piers).

Will keep everyone updated if we see something really really weird or can help get people in and out of the piers easily. This is so bizarre-one of our customers shipped PLASTIC PLATES and CUPS all the way from Carson, CA in with their food products to NYC and the stadium. Even though these plates and cups are heavily adorned with their name, couldn't they have had the printing done cheaper on the East Coast when you add in the freight cost??? I appreciate the business but you have to wonder about the excess money. They paid the same to ship those plastic plates and cups (which should have gone in a DRY trailer, NOT a refrigerated trailer which costs considerably more) as they did to ship their cream cheese filling for cheese cake and other bakery goods that will be on display at the Super Bowl. Sometimes you have to wonder what they are teaching these kids at school.

I can't imagine how horrible the NJ Turnpike is going to be on Sunday. Super Bowl Blvd had Route 80 screwed up worse then usual all week.

If there is any way you can manage to get past Giant's stadium before Sunday I'd do that.

Another option that you may want to consider is taking the outerbridge & driving through Staten Island. It's probably longer but may keep you out of game traffic.

Driving thru/into midtown Manhattan to the piers - last minute update as announced:

Super Bowl Sunday delays:

  • Ninth Avenue between West 34th and 65th Streets
  • Westbound 42nd Street, 49th Street, 53rd Street and 57th Street, river to river
  • Also on Game Day, there will be limited access to the Lincoln Tunnel

Notes:

Ninth Avenue runs southbound, uptown to downtown - one of the approach to Lincoln Tunnel out to NJ (the Meadowlands via Rt. 3 where SB is played) - probably running checkpoints & screening vehicles before allowing them to go into the tunnel, backing up traffic.

To get across mid-town, go across on 23rd. Street or 14th Street, then, go up on 10th Avenue (West Side Hwy/12th Avenue could be slow too) or from uptown, go thru Central Park (via 66th Street - east to west) to West End Avenue, turn left & south - it change name to 11th Avenue, for the pier or parking nearby, etc.

Tune to & listen to AM News Radio 880 and/or 1010 for updated traffic alerts. Good luck to all & enjoy the cruise.

hooka? You inhale some smoke. not marijuana. :D

I'm glad so far, so good. Getting across Manhattan, that is from the East River where you will start at, to the Hudson River (West side) is painful any day. Just leave early in the morning is my advice to you. Good Luck! and Bon Voyage. If you have time when you get on the ship let us know how you make out.
