alexandra cruiser Posted February 21, 2014 #1 Share Posted February 21, 2014 Often wondered who decides exactly when a port should be skipped. For safety reasons, political problems, terror threats, etc.Do they check travel warnings,do own research, what?? I ask this because I have a cruise with Isla Margarita(Venezuela) booked and heard political probs in country. Not that island specifically. So wonder what criteria is used? Had a river cruise in Egypt when travel warning posted the same day we left, but cruise went on with no cancellation. Many did NOT show up.We did,but felt a little uneasy. Now with Ukraine probs,it seems many ports to consider ...anyone know for sure?
Rare Noxequifans Posted February 21, 2014 #2 Share Posted February 21, 2014 In answer to your question ... do not know for sure. Suggest you contact the company that is to bring you to your area of concern. Also, it is clear that the situation will vary with many, many factors. No simple algorithm. Hawaiidan Posted February 21, 2014 #3 Share Posted February 21, 2014 I think that that process is a very secure process not for publication.
no fuss travel Posted February 22, 2014 #4 Share Posted February 22, 2014 On the Nautica, we were told that the ship and head office monitor the situations and the ship's captain and head office make the call. Passenger safety is the first concern of the cruise line.
Iceberg 3 Posted February 22, 2014 #5 Share Posted February 22, 2014 I think State Department travel advisories are a big factor
JimandStan Posted February 22, 2014 #6 Share Posted February 22, 2014 The concern is really threefold. A multi million dollar Asset (the ship), the reputation of the Cruise Line for the care and comfort of their passengers, and the Captain's safety record. The Head Office makes it their business to keep the Captain informed of conditions and Advisories and such, but unless the warnings are very blatant, because it is the Captain who has his career on the line, he gets the final call. alexandra cruiser Posted February 22, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted February 22, 2014 the passenger can always decide against going ashore if they feel uncomfortable. If far enough in advance, perhaps they may switch ports of call ahead of time. Are any of the current cruisers,or those in near future, concerned about Venezuela?Isla Margarita?Even Black Sea ports?
