Using OBC

It sounds like your entire "system" revolves around hoping that the Oceania Accounting system and/or data input staff will be as incompetent as some others which you experienced last year, on a different Cruise Line.

That was the case until the post earlier today that stated that they are able to get money from the casino from their OBC's which confirmed my thoughts so obviously by your words Oceania's system is as incompetent as some others.

While any such quixotic scheme might have some spasmodic degree of success, it seems fruitless, if not heartless to recommend such a course of action here, knowing full well that the stated policies of Oceania are designed to prevent such activity.

Very simply, O writes and oftentimes changes their policies to their benefit which is what one would expect. Is it too much to expect customers to do the same and use policies that benefit the customer to their advantage?? And, other than your comment, there is no way to know Oceania's policy and if that hole is in their system, perhaps they are aware of it and don't mind use of the OBC with the 5% surcharge??

Unlike that other Cruise Line which you mentioned, Oceania treats its' passengers with the respect and dignity which I hope that we have earned as responsible adults. Their liberal liquor importing policies and unsupervised lending Library stand in stark contrast to the Big Brother style micromanaging required to keep those mass market passengers in check, and I for one would like to keep it that way.

Completely off topic and not applicable to this discussion

We must ask ourselves, then, if the need to wrest every last cent from Oceania is so great that doing so is worth openly flouting their regulations here and sneaking around (what else is hoping for a book-keeping error?) on the ship.

No flouting their regulations or sneaking around; doing everything in the open and simply flowing what they will allow. Oceania tries to wrest every last cent from their customers which is what most businesses do and it is the customer's duty to get the best bang for the buck as well. It's a two way street and seems your duty on this board is to support Oceania completely and that they can do no wrong.

Responses above and there is absolutely nothing wrong with using loopholes in a policy to one's benefit. The purpose of CC is to inform people of what can be done on cruises and that include the good and the bad and informing people how they can best use their hard earned dollars and that's exactly what I am doing.

I've made my points and provided information that people can or won't follow and you have made yours. Now it is up to the people to decide their approach on their own and not be bullied in either direction. Nothing more need be said on this subject. People will decide on their own what is best for them.

For the record, in my prior post I was truly just trying to understand if Oceania's computer system is indeed designed to do something that no other cruise line's, that I'm aware of, is designed to do. I only anticipate $100 in onboard credit for my upcoming O cruise so for me it's a moot point. Really just trying to understand their system.

That said, I understand your post above, but honestly wonder based on my previous example given, how many people would go to guest relations at the end of the cruise and say, "I don't think my OBC should have been applied toward my casino purchase, so you should to correct my statement so that my credit card gets charged more." I think most would say, "Gee look at that, I guess they DO let it apply" and walk off happily owing less when the Amex bill arrives.

In fact, I agree with you 100% that most passengers would prefer it if all types of On-board Credits or "OBC's" could be used towards getting cash in the Casino.

In fact, if we lived in a World where those same passengers could be counted on to actually GAMBLE with those On-board Credits, then I have a hunch that most Cruise Lines would not have any objections to our doing so.

Unfortunately, and this is one of MANY reasons why the rules must always be dictated by the lowest common denominator, there are those among us who will invariably demand the full amount in cash from the front desk at the earliest possible moment and then insist that they got a better "deal" than everyone else because they were clever enough to look at the OBC as a bonus rebate on their Cruise Fare.

From the Cruise Lines point of view, such actions cheapen the value of their product and diminish a sales incentive which was intended to add an additional note of largess to an otherwise elegant experience.
