Just back from the getaway....

A little background....We're in our 60's and this was our 54th cruise (39 Carnival, 6 Celebrity, 1 Holland America and 9 NCL). We'd been on the Epic in Nov.and neither I nor my husband liked that ship....it was too closed in with none of the outside decks we're used to. I went on the Breakaway with a friend in Dec and loved it so was sure we'd like the Getaway. Like is a gross understatement!

If we hadn't already been veering away from Carnival to NCL this cruise would have done the trick....it was nothing short of amazing....from the excellent staff to the layout to the options available to the "waterfront".

We went to the Illusionarium on the first night (it's 20% off the first nite and we'd booked it before the cruise so they credited a percentage back to our sign & sail card). I liked the show and my husband stated it was the best ship show we'd ever gone to. The dinner was good....steak in some kind of gravy, really delicious shrimp in some kind of sauce, potato wedges, broccoli, rolls and dessert. Be sure to get there at least 15 or 20 minutes before your dining time for seats closest to the stage.

Dining on the "waterfront" is a nice treat and we managed to do that one night when we went to La Cusina.

My favorite hang-out spot for sun bathing was Spice H2O by the waterfall at the back of the ship....really loved that area!

For some reason this ship never felt crowded like the Epic did....you'd almost think it was nowhere near fully booked. I was always able to find lounge chairs, there were no long lines to get off or on the ship and none of the venues seemed crowded.

We went up on the waterfront on deck 8 and had comfy chairs to watch the fireworks.

Since we spent most evenings in the casino "donating" we didn't go to any of the shows so I can't comment on them.

If you're thinking of the Getaway you won't be disappointed!

How wonderful, so glad you had a great cruise on the Getaway. And glad you felt the same about the Epic. (too big and too crowded, so there's hope for us yet, LOL.)

Glad you had a good time...

Happy cruising... ;)

Hello, the waterfall on the Breakaway was my favorite spot as well:

I see you are from the NE also; would you say it is worth flying to Miami for the Getaway vs. being able to get to the breakaway via bus/train/driving etc.

I was going to book the Getaway in the fall, but opted to repeat the Breakaway due to logistics.

I realize 4-5 of the Entertainment shows are different and look fantastic, but I'd rather just take the bus to NYC rather than fly to Miami.

Also, among the Breakaway/Getaway/Epic did you have a preference?

Thank you for your review. It just makes me that more excited for my own cruise on the Getaway next month. We have a group of 18 celebrating my sisters 60th birthday. We are all looking forward to this trip.

I'm actually about to book an April cruise on the Breakaway. For me, they were very much alike and I loved them both. The flights to Florida and a night's hotel stay make us look to NY as often as possible.

I'd just stay totally away from the Epic....for us, there weren't many redeeming features.

You may have just made up our minds for us. We are getting a little disappointed in Carnival of late, although we loved the Breeze so much we sailed her twice last year. We need something to WOW us again.

I felt the same way about the Breeze....and if you loved the Breeze, you'll be thrilled with either the Breakaway or Getaway.

Carnival had begun to feel alot like "the same ol' same ol'"

Thanks for your review. We loved the Breakaway and can't wait til we sail the Getaway. It's really hard to go back to the Carnival experience once you enjoy everything these awesome NCL ships have to offer.

Thanks OP, if we hadn't booked Getaway cruise already last week for late April, we'd now. We didn't like Epic either but since the recent reviews about Getaway have been quite good, we thought that we could give her a chance too.

I have a strange question. One of the things I loved on Epic was getting a crepe in the evening at the Garden Café.

Did you ever notice if they were serving them on Getaway?

To my understanding crepes are available in buffet on all NCL ships - at least I haven't been on one that didn't have a crepe station there.

Think a port side cabin could see the fireworks on deck 8? Most the cabin there are more forward. I'm in a M6 right before they cut off to regular balconies so my balcony should extend out a little more.

It sounds like you had a wonderful cruise. We are happy for you so much! Our cruise is in September. We are in a BD cabin deck 10 starboard. I hope we can see the fireworks form our balcony. Anyone have any feedback on this?

The fireworks were off the aft area on the port side so I'd think you should go to Spice H2O if you don't mind crowds or deck 8 on the "waterfront"
