Entertainment on the Radiance

Recommended Posts

Planning an Alaska trip for 2015. Children 9 and 10 at the time of the cruise so we were planning on Disney. However, we have decided to take more time with a one way cruise and DIY land tour. Thinking about the Radiance. Concerned about entertainment for the kids, specifically:

1. I know there is an outdoor movie screen but wonder if the movies are family friendly. Heard one of the ships had "The Notebook" playing at night. Anywhere I can find a list of what they play each night?

2. Are any of the after dinner entertainment options kid-friendly?

3. Worst case scenario, if we're tired we can hang with the kids in the stateroom. What's on the stateroom TV?

I understand that Alaska is about the ports, bu there are a few cruising days and evenings to think about. Thanks for any info.

Hi there. We've been researching Radiance for our family cruise to Alaska in 2015 as well. We'll have three kids with us ages 6, 7 & 10. From everything I've read in reviews, it sounds like they have a fabulous kids club. Our kids were onboard the Celebrity Infinity back in 2010 with only 18 kids on board & they LOVED the kids zone. Couldn't get enough of it. They had a great cruise.

From what I hear about Radiance, it has a lot more to offer my kids than Infinity did. There's a Cinema on the ship as well as the outdoor big screen. Mini golf, rock climbing, heck a waterslide if we hit good weather. Production shows & musical acts are always good with kids. There's a lot to do regardless of how they define 'fun'. Something they'll each enjoy. I think they'll do just fine. :)

Enjoy your cruise!

Thank you.

I want to do a google search for the on-board activity schedule for that trip. What are they called on RCCL? I know they are called Navigators on Disney...

Cruise Compass.

Thanks! I did find a number of Cruise Compasses around the internet. At first it looks like an overwhelming number of activities, but on further inspection a number are sales pitches or shopping related. Some of the hings my kids would enjoy, like the top 40 DJ. I'm wondering how many of these venues are Adult only? I assume the casino, but how about the other bars?

I see the Cinema listed, which seems quite small on the deck plans. Not sure that the Movies are "first run" as advertised, but it does seem to change from day to day...

The movies, while not quite "first run", are usually the ones currently being shown on the airlines or on cable networks, like HBO or Showtime. Last week on Freedom, they showed the second film in the Hunger Games trilogy and "Man of Steel" among their other films. They also showed the Academy Awards program both on the large screen and on in-room TVs.. The Cinema isn't huge but it has stadium seating and movies are shown two or three times each day. :)

Our grandkids are 14 and 12 respectively and really enjoyed the Adventure Ocean program and its age-appropriate activities.

Thank you. Were your kids able to go with you to any of the production shows or any of the dance parties? Are the kids allowed in any of the clubs/lounges? Is there a Adventure Ocean "schedule" for a typical day posted anywhere?

I've heard of a family night in the disco.

Do a search on children's cruise compass'. You may not find one for Radiance, but I'm sure I've seen a few of her sister ships' floating around these boards.

The movie theater isn't huge. I traveled on the Serenade which is the same class as the Radiance. But it was never full or even close to it. They also showed some of the same movies on TV. I enjoyed have the theatre on board and saw a few movies.

Just off the Radiance, last week. The Radiance movie theatre seats only 48 people. Rotating movies were shown at both the movie theatre and the pool several times each day. And on at least one day of our cruise a movie was shown in the Colony Club. The movies which will be shown on your cruise will be different, but there should be a range in age appropriateness and genre.

Movies they showed on our 17 night Radiance cruise included:

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs II

Monsters University

Skyfall

Valentine's Day

White House Down

Man of Steel

50 First Dates

The Lone Ranger

Lee Daniels: The Butler

The Hunger Games (I)

Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Sound of Music Live

SuperBuddies

Red2

The Artist

We have also just booked Radiance for Alaska in 2015 with our two kids 10 and 11 years. We have sailed on Radiance twice in Australia and the kids loved it both times. So much so they would only let me book an Alaskan adventure if they were on Radiance and no other ship or cruise line!

The in room TV had a selection of kids movies which were great for 'chill out' time. Only two I can remember were 'Tangled' and 'Toy Story 3' but there were probably some others. Kids (and me!!) also enjoyed the documentaries they had on the TV about the building of the various mega ships.

The big pool screen had a mix of grown up and kids movies. Cloudy with Chance of Meatballs 2 was a huge hit whilst kicking back in the pool/spa. One thing though - the pool screen needed a bit of repair work when we were on it in January 2014. A couple of sections had funny colours and it was not 'full screen' but had a border down one side and across the top from memory. I think it may have had some dud pixels around the edge so they shrank the image! Still OK to watch though.

The kids also enjoyed a couple of the singing/dancing type shows. One comedian though said some things not really suitable for youngsters despite it being the early show but probably went over their heads. In future I might go to those type of shows first before suggesting it to the kids. The kids club was hit and miss for our children - they had great fun sometimes but not others depending on who was there and what was planned which was fine as plenty of other things to do. And they went there if we told them they had to because mum and dad were going to dinner!

We kept the Adventure Ocean planners if you want me to post some of the activities but they have things listed like 'Rattle Snake', 'Bomb Squads' and 'CannonBall Run' which probably don't mean much to us adults!

I would suggest to try and keep the young ones away from the arcade unless you want a big bill! If you do have to go the best value game is the air hockey table as the game actually lasts longer then the 30 seconds or so some of the video games do when you don't know what you are doing! We used arcade credits as a reward for polite behaviour etc and it worked a treat.

ckelly14, you couldn't choose a much more perfect ship than a Radiance class ship. We have sailed on the Radiance twice, and cruised Alaska on her sister ship, the Serenade. You are sure to appreciate the three acres of glass, providing views everywhere- even glass elevators!

Regarding activities, I just wanted to mention that your children can pack their bathing suits, as the Solarium (adults-only) pool will typically be open for children at certain times during an Alaska cruise. It was nice and toasty in there on the Serenade.

The kids will likely have fun with the mini-golf course as well.

I also wanted to mention Royal Caribbean's My Family Time Dining, here is a link for info: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruise/experiencetypes/product.do?pagename=onboard_prod_my_family_time_dining.

Cruise Compass.

If you search back about 5-6 days there was a thread..a review of the Radiance in Alaska from 2013 with copies of the Cruise Compass. That may be a place to begin as it lists activities for the day including movies, shows, etc.

I'll try to find it and bump it closer to the front here. I found the copies of the compass interesting. It's been 7 years since we were on the Radiance. Going back this summer to celebrate our anniversary....married onboard in Juneau.

The compasses are very helpful. Pretty convinced I'm going with Royal, but still considering Princess. Was surprised that Celebrity was actually slightly cheaper for the same itinerary, but pretty limited entertainment for the kids.

Anyone want to recommend a deck on the Radiance. I'm thinking deck 8....
