Will I be okay on Lido deck?

I've yet to take my first cruise (a 3 day Disney from Port Canaveral in August) but I also have 2 others booked with Princess, a 5 day Caribbean in January and an Alaskan cruise tour in May. I booked each of them 'blind' knowing nothing about cruise ships or cruise critic forums!

The cabin I am most bothered about is the one on Lido deck on the 5-day Caribbean. Am I likely to feel a lot more motion so high? The cost has gone up since I booked, but I am still thinking about making a change.

Anyone here like the higher decks? Might it be okay given that I don't have a good record sailing rough waters?

I'm still quite new here so apologies if this sort of question is asked all the time.

We just took our 13th cruise, all with Princess and all on the Lido Deck. It's our favorite location, but I'm sure most will tell you that it's a good location to susceptible to motion sickness. I've had one day where I felt that kind of sickness, and I'm not sure my cabin location would have made a difference, honestly. Felt the motion wherever I was.

Anyway, if it's a possible concern to you, I would consider re- booking lower/middle of the ship if you feel you might have any real motion issues.

We book the majority of our cruises on the Lido deck. the Lido deck has it's advantages especially on the Caribbean Princess. One flight up is the gym, make sure your room isn't directly under the treadmills. Some folks claim they hear nothing, but others report noise from the treadmill above their heads. You will also feel more movement the higher up in the ship you go and more movement towards the very front or back of the ship. Having said that we have never felt uneasy on the Lido deck with movement.

Bonus for Lido Deck rooms include just a short walk for pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs and the pools, just beyond that is the buffet. Also you are a quick elevator ride to the Casino, theater and piazza which includes the International Cafe. I would check it out if you are not under the treadmills, but that's just one cruisers opinion.

Thanks for your response and pleased to hear that it's your favourite location. It appealed to me because it's close to outdoor areas (even though we've booked a balcony) and great views. I'm hoping that because we're headed to the Caribbean, and it's not hurricane season, that I may be okay.

That's a good tip about the treadmills and if I don't change, I will check that. Thanks.

Ken brought up a good point as well, make sure your cabin isn't beneath the gym. You can and do get a bit of noise from the Lido for what is above you. If the gym is right above you, you might want to see if you can move forward/back a bit to avoid being right beneath the equipment.

He also mentioned the positives, which is why we book the Lido to begin with. It suits us perfectly.

Always a bit of noise anyway. We were on the Royal a couple of weeks ago, beneath the Sanctuary, and you could still hear them setting up lounge chairs over our heads at 7am, but we were up anyway, and that rarely bothers us. Have heard them running sweepers overhead early as well. Not enough to run us to another location though. :D

The Lido deck is a great location on the ship, but if you have a tendency toward motionsickness it is one of the worst locations. I have no issues with seasickness, but my niece does, and so I do sympathize with those who suffer. If you find you have issues, your best location is going to be as close to midship as you can get and as close to the water line as possible, i.e. a much lower deck. On the Caribbean Princess, for a balcony situation that would be Dolphin Deck for a mid-ship mini-suite or Caribe for a mid-ship balcony. If you are ok with just an ocean view you could do Emerald, or even the Window Suites on Deck 6. Don't know which ship you are on for Alaska, but the Grand Princess and Crown Princess - my advice is the same.

Hope you find that seasickness is not an issue for you!

We just did our first Lido deck. I wanted to see how it would work, but I don't think we'll do it again. Motion sickness is not an issue for us. Neither of us has ever been seasick. (Knock on wood. LOL.) The advantages to Lido deck are ready access to pizza, the buffet, the pool. We had a balcony, and I was afraid we might hear the noise from deck, but that was not a problem. It's easy to get an elevator, because so many people are headed to your deck! The biggest disadvantage was the noise in the halls from passengers who had gotten off the forward elevator and found themselves lost. (That one leads into the cabins section of Lido deck.) The lost people made lots of noise hollering from one end of the corridor to another while they tried to figure out where the pool was. There was a lot of that at night when the drunks were on the prowl. There are directions in the halls about which way to go, but I don't think 80% of people read them. This was short cruise, and perhaps on a longer one, people will learn where to go and find no need to shout about it. I probably didn't answer your question :) but you have to decide yourself if the Lido deck will work for you.

I would just pay attention to what is directly above you. While I agree that it is a great location for easy access to most of your daily activities, my mom and I sailed one time right below the pool area. Never, never again. We heard pool chairs being dragged and decks being cleaned very, very, very early in the morning. If you are below something like the spa or buffet you will be just fine.

I too love the Lido deck and have not had an issue with motion.

The only thing we noticed was on our Alaska cruise we did not have a view of the bow or forward view if I recall it was the bridge blocking our view?. For Alaska would have been nicer being down at least one floor.

Love being so close to buffet and pizza/burger grill, pools and MUTS.

Enjoy! Seadeck2

If you are concerned at all about motion sickness, purchase Bonine from any drug store. It is very effective preventing motion sickness. My wife takes one each morning just as a preventative measure and we always book Caribe, mid-ship.

We've taken quite a few first timers with us and I always suggest trying the remedy way ahead of time to see how it affects you. There are various kinds and if one makes you less than fine, try another. You may not need it at all but it's nice to have a fall back position! Enjoy the cruises and don't worry.

Well thank you everyone for so much good advice - things I had never thought of. I will be sure to buy some Bonine before our Disney cruise (August so fingers crossed for no hurricane). I think once I've done that, I'll be in a better position to know how I feel about the motion on board and whether I need to change deck for the January Princess cruise.

Thanks again :)

My wife was susceptible to sea sickness. Unfortunately, sea sick pills made her drowsy. That's a common problem with sea sick meds.

Ginger capsules came to the rescue. The only side effect was ginger breath. She'd start them a couple days before the cruise.

You will find them in most health food stores. Check your local Walgreen, too.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll pack some of those too ..... and hope I don't need either :)

Just as general advice, bring a few days' supply of all the nonprescription medication you think you might need. They will be more expensive on board ship, and if you use more than a few days' worth, it's time to go to the medical center. And almost anything nonprescription in the US is available (often cheaper) at non-US pharmacies. And often your prescribed drug is cheaper and nonprescription in foreign lands.

Consider a lightweight travel mug. Some swear by reusable bottles, I don't like them because you really can't wash something like that very well. I'm one of those who takes a case of water aboard. On a warm weather cruise, you might want to consider it too.

If you have minibar items in your refrigerator, it's OK to ask the cabin attendant to get rid of them, if you have no interest.

I would not have thought to take lightweight travel mugs (I have a good supply of Disney ones :)) so a good tip, as is the case of water. Thanks.

We'll definitely be travelling with all of our prescription medication and since we're Brits, and over 60, it will have been free anyway. Quite happy to pay out for the travel sickness pills though ;)

I just returned from a 49 day on the Lido deck. Suggest cabin number lower than 300 as lots of traffic between elevator and open air deck. Gym noise is an issue but they have posted for users to not walk until after 9am. I heard thumping in the middle of the night. Never discovered who was using equipment at 2 or 3 am. Note all Lido cabins are forward or mid-forward. Suggest mid-forward to minimize gym concerns. Rocking only during rough seas. I do not get sea sick so this never bothered me. I love Lido deck and try to always book on that deck. Enjoy

I agree, always book forward of the elevator. ;)

I agree. In the caribbean, the hallways between the pool deck and

the elevators gets very hot an humid, as the A/C is unable to keep

up with the doors being opened so frequently.

How strange (to me!) - anyone know the reason? These are mugs from the resorts and not Disney cruise line (if they have such a thing).

Just checked, and the cabin I booked is 243 :)

Thanks again to everyone for the input. All the posts have all been very interesting to me.
