cruzinfamilyof4 Posted April 20, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 20, 2014 So DD asked me the other day how late into the night it is light and if anyone has had a problem with it. On that note how early does it get light? I have never seen any questions about this. We are planning on cruising the end of August. Any insight? Thanks! Budget Queen Posted April 20, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 20, 2014 What many people forget to add in with the "daylight" times is the extended twilight. I have sailed many time in the August timeframe.
Northern Aurora Posted April 22, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 22, 2014 In Fairbanks in mid-June into early July folks can read newspapers without any artificial light at midnight. One of our summer solstice events is the Midnight Sun Baseball game in which our local Gold Panners play a visiting team -- the game is played without any artificial light and starts at 10:30 PM. The game pauses at midnight as we all stand and sing our state anthem. It is a little unclear how long this game has been played but the tradition seems to have been started around 1910 or so as a Solstice event between local teams. utahtea Posted April 22, 2014 #5 Share Posted April 22, 2014 Holy Cow i am amazed.. am i reading this properly.. on the cruise the sun will rise at 4am ish? and stay light till 10pm ish ? this is the info i received from sunrise sunset dot com 26 Sunrise: 3:44am Sunset: 10:24pm Day length: 18h 39m New moon27 Sunrise: 3:45am Sunset: 10:24pm New Moon: 12:10am Day length: 18h 39m 28 Sunrise: 3:46am Sunset: 10:23pm Day length: 18h 37m Yes you are reading that correctly. The farther north you go in the summer, the longer the daylight hours too. So daylight will be longer in Juneau than in Ketichan on the same day. If you have a window or balcony bring clothespins to keep the drapes shut tight! :D One summer years ago we drove to Alaska with our family and our dog. The dog had the hardest time getting use to such long daylight hours...LOL! Utahtea
thecruisers723 Posted April 23, 2014 #6 Share Posted April 23, 2014 We just did the Alaska cruise last September 10th-17th and it was dark by around 8:00. We've also been the end of June before and it didn't get dark until after 11:00.
utahtea Posted April 23, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 23, 2014 We just did the Alaska cruise last September 10th-17th and it was dark by around 8:00. We've also been the end of June before and it didn't get dark until after 11:00. June 21, 2014 is the summer equinox. From now until June 21st, daylight will get longer. Then on June 21st the days will start to get shorter again. Utahtea
