Caribbean Princess still in Port

I wonder if the compass adjustment (or lack thereof) was the reason she had to use a tug to get in and out of port. Seems odd that a ship that has backed her way in to Roatan had to use a tug to get into Port Everglades.

Nope. The magnetic compass is about the 4th or 5th level of navigation the ship would use. It is archaic by today's standards, but since it doesn't require power or a satellite, it is the "last line of defense".

Since the CP is a propeller and rudder ship, the most likely reason for the tug escort is that she was experiencing a problem with steering. A ship like this, will have two rudders, each with two steering motors to move them, so there are 4 means of turning the ship, each one capable of doing the job. However, when a ship experiences a problem with any equipment required for the safe navigation of the vessel (steering, propulsion, radar, etc), they must notify the port of arrival before entering port. It is then up to the port state to determine whether the ship will be allowed into port, or whether extra safety measures are required. The USCG almost universally requires a ship with even one steering motor out of service to have a tug escort from sea buoy to sea buoy. Many countries don't care. You will see this for podded ships, when one of the steerable azipods is out of service. Last year, the Carnival ship out of New Orleans had to be escorted all the way up and down the Mississippi River until the pod was repaired.

Seems like a lot of issues for a ship fresh out of dry dock. I hope she's all better before we board in 4 weeks.

The compass adjustment isn't an issue. It is a requirement to have an updated compass card every two years, and it cannot be done without swinging the ship through 360 degrees.

The steering gear could be something simple that may be repaired today, its hard to say. Perhaps they were waiting on a part that came on turn-around day, and will be installed today. Not every piece of equipment is inspected during drydock. Maintenance is a daily, 24 hour a day task for the ship's engineers, and yet things still break.

Very true. Either way, if you're cruising, life is good.

Someone else earlier in the thread mentioned very strong thunderstorms. High winds would have necessitated the use of a tug to get out of port.

I live 20 minutes from Port Everglades and yesterday we had 3.5" of rain and major flooding throughout areas of Broward and Miami Dade County.

A water spout (tornado over water) was spotted off of Ft. Lauderdale Beach, which is close to Port Everglades.

It was a very wet sail away.

Caribbean Princess was late due to thunder storms delaying passenger boarding. The Captain told us we was going to stop the ship shortly after leaving FLL to test the bow thrusters. He performed the test an all is well... Lots of new carpet and paint, understand they added several new interior cabins too - currently under way heading to the Turks, all is wonderful

Sorry for your late departure but soooo relieved that nothing is wrong with CB! Sailing in 4 weeks.:D Last time we were booked on her 2 years ago our sailing was canceled the day before we left for San Juan!! We have been worried that this would be a Deja Vu experience!! Have a wonder cruise and let us know all about it!!!

We are on the same sailing as you. I had a nervous pit in my stomach as I watched her sitting idle off shore. Glad all is well.

She called to tell her that when they boarded - her floor of the cabin was soaking wet - like water coming up into her toes - and then no a/c in the cabins at all - since it was delayed - people were actually leaving the ship - bags in hand -

They were told the delay was due to late planes - but the wet carpets and no a/c concern me more

Does anyone have an update as to which cabin was involved?

Hope everything was resolved and all are having a great cruise. I board next week.
