Does upgrade fairy only call...

No. We booked through a TA and was upgraded from the Empress deck to the Panorama deck. Upsells may be another thing but upgrade was done for us. It has nothing to do with whom you book through. It has to do with where your cabin is and if they want to move you up to a higher priced cabin so that they can sell the lower priced one again. Again, that's an upsell, not an upgrade.

Generally speaking, if you book through a TA, Carnival will not contact you directly. You have to work through the TA. It sounds like what Dick is referring to are the free upgrades that Carnival offers as past guest promotions at time of booking. The upsell call is what you are talking about where Carnival calls you after booking and close to sail date to offer you an upgrade for a certain amount of money.

I guess anything is possible, but I don't remember anyone posting here that Carnival called them with an upsell offer when they booked through a TA.

I have received the upsell call many times, but I always book through Carnival.

This will be our 19th cruise with CCL, and still waiting on our 1st ever upsell and/or upgrade call.:(

Oh well, we book a room in an area we like, so all is still well.

This is our 15 Cruise coming up and we have never gotten a call.

I can say that since ES has come out we have never gotten a price drop either.

Guess I'm just booking great prices the first time

Does upgrade fairy only call if you booked with Carnival directly?

Not necessarily. I always book with carnival and I've been on 16 cruises and I've never gotten a call from the upgrade fairy but I have gotten the price drops with early saver. And sometimes I've been able to upgrade to a balcony for little or no money from an ocean view just because of the price drop.

For our 2014 B2B we received the "upsell" call for each one. However, we wanted to keep the same cabin for both cruises and the 1st upsell was for only the 1st leg. We did receive an email a week later with the offer for the 2nd week. Happy with cabin we chose so we didn't take it.

We've received one complimentary upgrade call--and it was for the first leg of our b2b last summer. We directly booked with CCL and moved from 1As and 4As to balconies in the aft and forward. We had to move cabins for the second leg anyway, so it wasn't a big deal and we were happy to take the cabins off CCL's hands. We were told we got the upgrades for "loyalty" (Mom and I were both Platinum and had done several CCL cruises that year).

Here's what happened. In 2003, we booked six balcony cabins on the Empress deck of the Conquest out of NOLA through our TA. About a month after we booked, I was looking at our booking on-line and saw that they had us on the Panorama Deck. I called our TA to see what was going on.

She called back after calling Carnival and was told that one of our cabins booked had three in it. For some reason, they no longer were allowing three in that cabin so they called the first alphabetically in our group and ask if it was OK to upgrade all six of our cabins to the Panorama Deck. They agreed so they just did it for all of us without contacting any more of us. It was an upgrade, not an upsell or any promotion offers.

While you didn't state it, just to ensure you know, you will never get a call about price drops. You have to go look for them yourself. I have gotten many price drops with the ES rate but I have to do the leg work myself.

Thank You for the advise,

I do know that we have to check. I just have been good at getting good deals.

I'm ES on our next cruise and it has gone up in price.

I do walk the gray area when I say I never get a price drop. I tend to wait till a big price drop occurs then book ES and switch to the price category I want all in the same phone call.

Most of the time it is a casino rate.

Congrats on the upgrade, but I really don't think "loyalty" has anything to do with it. As I stated earlier, our cruise this Saturday will be #19 with CCL, and have never received an upgrade and/or upsell call.

Just reporting what this mysterious creature (:)) told me on the phone. She also said it helps that we were driving and answered the phone--we were literally on our way to the port. We got them because of last-minute cancellations (all of the literature in our cabins had different names on them).
