glass blowing show

They do give out tickets during the hot glass show for items to be given away - but I've been to shows were there was no give away so they don't always do it. Then there is the auction, usually held the last sea day - items auctioned are selected by the artists. They do not ship the glass so the buyer must be able to carry the piece off. I was lucky to be able to purchase the Breast Cancer piece my last cruise - it is stunning. :D

What a beautiful vase -- I know you'll treasure it forever! At our first Hot Glass show (Solstice '10), a friend of ours won the raffle at one of the night-time shows. My favorite picture from that cruise is of him (holding his prized dish) beside the artisan who made it.

PS -- Our friend was a nervous wreck about how to get his glass home from the ship. Fortunately, his room steward was able to find some bubble-wrap for him. ;)

The vase is so pretty, I was thrilled to purchase it and have the money go for a great cause. When you purchase from the auction - they do bubble wrap your item up very well - but we were extremely cautious with it till home. Sadly I haven't seen much of it (thus the photo) because 3 days after we got home it was packed away and moved to our temporary home while we build a new one. Rather than risk breaking it - we've kept it boxed away till the final move. Opening that box later this year - will seem like Christmas to me - I can't wait to display it! Best cruise souvenir ever.

DH & I consider ourselves official "glass groupies." We love the hot glass show so much we won't book any X ship that doesn't have it. The artists are amazing and their glass art is unbelievable...especially considering the conditions under which they work. There are usually a few "comfy chairs" with padding and backs, but like other posters have said, you have to get there early to grab them.

Give me a hard bench at the hot glass show over a stool at a slot machine any day! The casino may have A/C, but I've never lost a penny at the hot glass show.

I also LOVE the hot glass show and have been to most of them on our last three cruises.

The benches may be hard but I'm so mesmerized by the glass blowing that I don't think about that at all.

And most of the benches are in the shade.

However, unlike constantcruiser, the shows have cost us far more than I've ever spent in the casino! ;) But then, I have 3 lovely pieces to remind me of those wonderful trips. (One was for breast cancer and the other 2 were for the scholarship)

2 of the three below

On our cruise, the explanation given for the lack of raffles at every show - in particular at the end of every show - was that the artists quickly realized that they'd see a small group of regulars at the shows who would leave with nothing because at the end of every show a massive crowd would come by only for the raffle. The artists decided to vary the procedure, not having raffles at some shows and having several during others. They also held the raffles at random times during the shows. That meant that the people who were clearly interested would likely be present for the raffles and be more likely to win a piece than those who would drop by at the end of the shows for the sole purpose of snagging a souvenir.

We were lucky enough to receive a piece by the end of our cruise, but didn't attend expecting that. We came regularly because we enjoyed watching the process.

Because I really enjoy the Hot Glass Show, we went to the Corning Museum on a recent road trip. The glass shows there are significantly shorter, though the museum has lots of stuff to see. If you are ever near Corning, NY, it is worth the trip. You can even sign up to create your own piece, but you do need to sign up in advance if you are visiting during a busy time.

A friend once won one of the pieces - and he gave it to us as a thank you. A treasure - and it made it home.

Ond benefit is if you show a Celebrity sea pass card from a prior sailing, the Corning museums gives you complimentary admission as well. Haven't tried it but read this on the X website.

It's true that if you show your Seapass from a X ship where there is a hot glass show, you will get free admission to the Corning Museum in New York. After seeing the shows on two cruises, DH & I made the trip from Texas to the Finger Lakes region of NY specifically to visit the museum. The glass art displayed there is phenomenal, but I actually enjoyed the shows aboard the ships better than those at the museum. The artists on the ship are very entertaining, as well as informative, and the pieces are unique because they can choose to create whatever they want...not just something the museum thinks it can sell as a souvenir.
