I've just been watching a vid over on YouTube and they stopped off in Warnemünde, they then hopped on a train over to Berlin.

 

I'm just wondering, is there much to do in the port town or is it more of a point to head off to the capital?

Its a 5-6 hours round trip to Berlin. Considering you typically only get 8-9 hours ashore it doesn't give you long to see anything in the Capital.

The first time we went we got the train to Rostok which we found a bit disappointing. On returning to Wernemunde we were surprised to find that it was a pleasant little town so next time we spent the whole day there. We had a walking tour for a couple of hours and spent the rest of the day wandering around the shops, cafes and beach.

We have not been to Berlin but have heard that it is a very tiring day and as our main priority is to relax we decided that it was not for us.

Thanks for the replies. I was just curious if it was one of those "port towns" where its best to travel elsewhere, sounds like its fine in its own right.

We caught a train to Rostock, then a train to Bad Doberan. There is a narrow guage steam railway that goes through the towns main street en route to the coast.

 

We were back in Warnemunde by 13.30hrs.

My son visited Warnemunde on a recent cruise; absolutely loved it. Was happy not to take the longish round trip to Berlin. However, hubby and I took a 5 day trip to Berlin last July, and would thoroughly recommend it. From the minute we got off the plane, everyone was so helpful and pleasant, very welcoming. Received a beaming smile at Passport Control (when does that ever happen?).

 

We took 2 guided tours with Fat Tire Bikes which were fab. The guides are extremely well-informed; our first guide was a history and politics graduate from Canada with a special interest in Cold War politics; the second was a batty Australian girl who had lived and breathed all things Berlin for almost a decade. We kept the bikes for a further two days to continue our sight-seeing. It's a great way to get around the city. Berlin is fairly flat and very bike-friendly (not a piece of lycra in sight). Cycling is not considered a pursuit sport - very refreshing indeed. Great sign-posting, great wine (yes, really!), fabulous hospitality. Everything runs like clockwork, as you would expect. Our impression is that Berlin is respectful of its recent history, but will not dwell on it. It is looking to the future. Well worth a visit.

Warnemunde is a lovely seaside town with nice shops, restaurants and a lovely beach if weather is good easy to spend your time there and if you want close enough to go back to the ship for lunch then go out agian if you prefer.

We have stopped at Warnemunde three times in the last 2 years & we agree that it is a beautiful little town. The first time we did an excursion to Lubeck which was a big disappointment - UNESCO Heritage Site as it is a medieval town on an island in a river but for every medieval building there was a 1960s concrete monstrosity housing MacDonalds, C & A, etc. The second time we did an excursion to Rostock which was ok - the best bit was the trip around the Stasi Prison Museum. The third time we stayed in Warnemunde & realised what we had been missing! Beautiful clean wide beach, long promenade, great shops, bars & restaurants, all situated on the river & a 10 minute walk from the ship.

That sounds good. I did that in Cartagena this year. Less fuss than trying to find somewhere that not only looks decent to eat and then to make sure that everyone is accommodated. ;)

The cruise lines tend to list Warnemunde as ( Berlin) but it is such a trek. The US lines seem to have more time in port but its still a long time on a bus. We went to Rostock which is ok but Warnemunde is very pleasant and on a sunny day has a good beach.
