newtocruisin' Posted July 2, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 2, 2014 Any thoughts on how Arthur will impact cruises going out of NY on Saturday? We are leaving on the Gem and wondering if it will be very rocky? Do I stock up on Dramamine??

We are leaving on the Gem and wondering if it will be very rocky? Do I stock up on Dramamine?? If you are prone to seasickness you probably want to take precautions. Keep an eye on NCL.com . They are quite good about providing updates to guests on cruises that may be affected by weather.

Rare mking8288 Posted July 2, 2014 #5 Share Posted July 2, 2014 For now, I don't think there's reasons to be overly concerned - stayed tuned & informed, check weather forecast closely - IF you are driving early into NYC to board the Gem from nearby. Use common sense as this is the start of a holiday weekend for many with the 4th coming up. It is not expected to be a major storm for the NY area. The NHC issues storm updates every 6 to 8 hours, and more often if necessary - bookmark weather.com and acuweather mobile sites with mobile smartphones. Storm track & forecast toward NYC and impacts will become much more accurate & focused at T-48 hours, although at T-72 hours, it's generally spot on. It seemed by Saturday afternoon, NYC will be on the back side of the storm on its way up to New England and/or further out toward the Atlantic ocean - so expect a bit of choppy seas & wind sailing out of NY going southbound on the Gem. For the few that are flying into NY early - check with your airlines about your flight as you might want to change your travel plan - take advantage of fee waivers currently in force by Delta and JetBlue (nothing posted yet by AA or United) for the Northeast US airports. It's a busy travel period and planes are flying full these days - flight delays and cancellations will make it more difficult to rebook and/or reconfirm for a different flight, once the disruptions take hold & ripple across the airline's major hubs. The latest NHC projection showing the eye of the storm being the closest to NYC around Friday evening, off the coast of MD/NJ heading east out to sea and away from land. The tail will spin around - wind & rough surf ?? By Saturday, it will be cloudy and most of the rain/shower gone and drying up. Pack a raincoat and/or wet weather gear if planning to sightsee & tour NYC over the next 3 days - and, have indoor plans. Enjoy the cruise, relax & have a great time. Monkeymom1010 Posted July 2, 2014 #6 Share Posted July 2, 2014 I'm traveling also and I'm very concerned as well. I am hoping Arthur just moves quickly so it's out of our path! Hoping by Saturday we will be dealing with minimal rocking (a girl can only hope). As for sea sickness, I like Bonine less drowsy and love wearing sea bands. I find both help great! Ginger products help as well. Happy Sailing to us!!!

Irene7 Posted July 2, 2014 #9 Share Posted July 2, 2014 Any thoughts on how Arthur will impact cruises going out of NY on Saturday? We are leaving on the Gem and wondering if it will be very rocky? Do I stock up on Dramamine?? I wouldn't worry about the storm itself at this point. As the other posters have said, just watch the NCL website. However, I would take precautions in case of seasickness. I would expect the sea to be pretty choppy at the least.
untailored bostonian Posted July 3, 2014 #10 Share Posted July 3, 2014 (edited) The only impact it might have is when the ship gets back into port to get ready for you. By Saturday PM Arthur will be in Canada, and the seas will be calming down. Edited July 3, 2014 by untailored bostonian
spidybabe Posted July 3, 2014 #11 Share Posted July 3, 2014 NCL gives out generic Bonine at guest services for sea sickness. Works great. Also try green apples and anything pretzels. You will see alot of pretzel rolls around the ship.... they are there for a reason (not only cuz they taste great) Safe saling
PDIDDYwife Posted July 3, 2014 #12 Share Posted July 3, 2014 I have a friend on a Carnival leaving right now- she put a Facebook post up that they are not going to Canada, they will be heading to Bermuda instead. Expecting rough waters in New England over the weekend- if this helps you any! PDW

Gershep Posted July 3, 2014 #14 Share Posted July 3, 2014 Nauzene is good for nausea. It is sold over the counter in stores for about five dollars. They make one for sea sickness but that one is harder to fine. Prescription Bonine works even better than over the counter. I agree Bonine is better than Dramamine. Rare mking8288 Posted July 4, 2014 #16 Share Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) Checking the NYC area weather forecast, rain is expected shortly & more thunderstorms this afternoon, and urban flash flood warning still in effect. Otherwise, the Macy's firework display tonight is ON - best viewed along the East River. Okay, the GEM is safe and almost home - tracked by NY Harbor Webcam's Marine Traffic link - perhaps 20 miles off the shore of Toms River, NJ (north of Atlantic City) doing about 10 knots, it's raining & sea is a bit choppy. It's cloudy & misty/foggy so they probably cannot see land in the distance, but with "Arthur" being downgraded and moving further out & north to New England - the ride shouldn't be too bad. Great navigation in outsmarting the storm, again. Air travel up and down the East Coast including NYC has been impacted, and airlines are operating fewer scheduled flights today due to the holiday - cancelled & delayed flights aren't as bad this morning but thousands of flyers were stranded yesterday to/from/transiting via local area airports. (A # of ships sailing from NY are heading to Bermuda instead, i.e. the Carnival Splendor for a 1 day visit as it was scheduled for Canada when it left NY yesterday) Happy C r u i s i n g :) :D Edited July 4, 2014 by mking8288

Rare mking8288 Posted July 4, 2014 #19 Share Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) Robin/meatballs - don't forget those "Bermuda" shorts while clearing out Macy's ... LOL. From Oceanweather's marine forecast on waves & conditions, your sailing to BDA will be just fine - good weather ahead from AccuWeather, Weather Channel & no more tropical storm or hurricane in the forecast. Temp's in the 70's next week & partly cloudy. Right now, it's showing 30 ft. waves in the middle of the Arthur out in the Atlantic but pretty sure ships are steering clear & keep their distance. Raining for the GEM (on live webcam) and sea is choppy, moderate & some white wavelets across the bow. Nothing major to be worried about for those accustomed to sailing the Altantic coast - and, the Breakaway will "plow" right thru. Checking on the Gem's location, she's passed Asbury Park, NJ toward Long Branch at 10 knots, and on course to be passing Sea Bright / Sandy Hook for Lower Bay at late afternoon ??? - and even closer to shore than 2 hours ago. Wondering if she's just hugging the coast b/c it's the best & safest area to be in and doing circles overnight, or, would she come in to MCT and dock at the pier this evening - curious mind wanted to know :D :p I don't see bringing her into port early - keep the casino open, serve dinner & maybe get a spot to watch tonight's fireworks from the ship, at a distance - that would be cool. Besides, I cannot imagine the terminal being staffed today for porters and CBP officers to clear the ship and allow optional early disembarkation. Update - Gem just changed her 350 degree heading to 262 degree, turning portside, bow toward land - not heading into NY harbor, and slowed down to 8.7 knots. Rare shof515 Posted July 4, 2014 #20 Share Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) Here is the Gem from the AIS Map: It does show that turn she is making. I think parts of the NY Harbor might be closed due to the fireworks tonight. And she is too far to see the fireworks at night. I think they might just circles around the coast of NJ before until the Harbor is reopen early tomorrow morning.
