Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

Hey, there are rude people on both sides and yes there are inconsiderate smokers that blow smoke in someone's face and throw butts off the ship, just as there are rude non-smokers who cough or wave at smoke. BUT WE ALL DON'T FIT INTO THOSE TWO BOXES. There are considerate smokers and there are considerate non-smokers, but you seem to place all the non-smokers into one nice little box....well, we all don't fit in there. But with the latest rhetoric, you might have positioned a lot of non-smokers so that they would fit into the box you want them to be in. Consideration goes both ways, I was always taught you can get more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.

BTW, I don't think there will be any more smoke in the casino, the issue will be that possibly those of us that like to gamble will not be able to find a seat or a machine. Won't bother me, might bother NCL who is paying almost 100% of my 11 day November cruise and probably expects me to be gambling like I normally do, because I can always go to Las Vegas to spend my gambling dollars.

Wait a minute you are saying it is rude for someone who does not smoke to cough when they inhale someone else's smoke? REALLY!

I think she said or meant when a non smoker deliberately walks through a designated smoking area which I have seen happen by the way.

Yes, I think it is rude if someone goes into a smoking section and coughs or waves at the smoke. I don't like the smell of smoke, so I don't walk through the smoking section.

I agree with you. I do not know any smokers who are inconsiderate. They always ask before lighting up. Same with the non-smokers - if the smoke bothers them, they go inside or leave the area. These are personal friends though. Strangers are a different story. You cannot control how someone was raised, or how they act ... and that's the problem! This board proves that!

Now that you have gotten what you want with the banning of smoking on balconies you more than anyone on this thread are already realizing you created a more serious problem of added smoke in the casino and on open decks. Your posts have created more backlash than any others. Hope I am never next to you as I am sure you are one of those balcony peekers.

I know this wasn't directed at me, but since the smoking space outdoors is limited, I don't think it will be an issue. Same with the casino.

I have had people sit next to me in a casino, strangers, and ask if I minded before they smoked. I've also had people sit next to me in a casino totally oblivious to their smoke blowing right in my face  Everyone can't be lumped together!

You are correct. I was basically Switzerland (except for flavored e-cigarettes) on the issue, but because of the rhetoric and nastiness (talking about there being a war, win or lose or getting back at them, or spying, etc.), I think Switzerland will probably pick a side. I don't like the smell of smoke, but when I go to a casino, I understand it is a smoking area and deal with it. If it gets too bad, I simply move to another machine...I don't make a fuss, don't ask them to stop, don't wave or cough, just move. On my NCL cruises, I always have a balcony, I brought a small fan with me so that if someone smoked, I could turn the fan on and they could smoke and I didn't have to smell it...thought that was a good compromise. I guess it doesn't pay to be Switzerland on here, because the way some post your are either on one side or the other...too bad!

If everyone acted like you we would almost be in a perfect world. Good for you. :-)

And don't think I'm being sarcastic because I'm totally not.

I'm a non-smoker. I can't see any smokers on their balconies ever bothering me. I've been on a few cruises and never been bothered by anyone smoking. Not on balconies or anywhere else.

I think there are a lot of folks that just look for things to whine about because they can!

It was only an issue for us once. The people next door to us were chain smokers. It was so bad that even my husband, who isn't bothered by smoke, couldn't sit out there. So - I never discount anyone who says it bothers them. Anyway, after that time, we started booking the aft-facing balcony cabins and never had a problem.

The attitude all these years from smokers was that it was their cruise too so non-smokers would just have to suck it up on balconies or go somewhere else. Now everybody can breathe fresh air on balconies. A win win for ALL.

Maybe you lucked out and didn't have smokers next to you. Ever think of that?

I feel bad for the people who were nice posting here when all of this was being discussed. My friend Che who left, my "fried shrimp" friend who smokes, and the others who are nice, decent people. I do feel for all of those people. The people who threw tantrums, threatened to blow smoke in people's faces, yelled and scream that it would "never" happen, and threatened to smoke more out of spite? I could care less about them! Thankfully, most people are not like those few.

Seriously - the abuse clinic is down the hall - this is the argument clinic

I wish someone could quantitatively state what constitutes dangerous second hand smoke vs what is simply dislike of smell - preception vs reality. I honestly don't know the answer but I do feel that someone 20 feet away <insert personal number> isn't being subjected to second hand smoke from a single cig - just the smell... BIG difference... its all about the parts per billion/million...

You know I won't buy an Ozone air cleaner because I preceive a health issue - too funny... I get the impression that some folks feel their body is their 'vessel' and therefore should never be contaminated by that which is considered 'bad' - ie aspertame, smoke, ozone, preservatives... no judgement - just don't impact me...

For me - mine is more like a crock pot - little bit of this, not too much of that... just as long as I have a smile on my face when it's all said and done...

Okay - carry on- the beatings will continue until moral is improved....

Bingo...You got smoking banned on balconies. The compromise is smoking areas on deck and the casino. Now you are not happy with that compromise you want smoking to be banned there as well so Yeah at this point us smokers feel like we are in a war because the non-smokers won't compromise AT ALL

Compromise in the casino? The casino always was a smoking area

The only change now will be you must be an active Player to smoke there.

And it will be enforced so actually there will be less space indoor for a smoker.

Not a compromise by any means just a cut back on indoor smoking area because it will be more than obvious if you are in the casino just to smoke and not play

Ncl wants you to play ... Not just sit there and pretend to play so you can smoke

I have always said just put up a wall and be done with it but since that doesn't seem to be a thought with new ship builders I think smokers should brace themselves for non smoking casinos just like celebrity.

5 years max.

Thank you.

It is a shame Che left. I hope she tries out a balcony on HAL before they to change over but if not, she'll love her land vacations as well.I do my best to be nice and see both sides of the fence until the kids start going "nanny-nanny boo-boo" and then I just want them to drop and give me 20! :D

I think it is rude when the architects place the casino so every has to walk by or thru it. Elderly and babies alike.

And yes I will put my hand over my face and get thru ASAP

Call me rude but I think it is the greedy company who is rude by placing the casino where they do

The BA being the perfect example. Open and centrally located

Question? If you said it bothered you what did they do? They leave? Or did they still smoke? Or just not smoke?

The real question is if you said it bothered you but what if they still went ahead and lit up?

I know I would be the one to leave at that point but I would say " why did you even bother to ask if you are going to smoke anyway?"

Well, I never told anyone it bothered me. It's just not in my nature to do that, especially when they were so kind to ask in the first place. I would just find another machine to play at if it really bothered me.

So, did we decide it's a good policy or a bad policy?

Just kidding. The enforceable part will be enforced, but the ban on vaping in staterooms and on balconies will be ignored just as the speed limit is ignored on a lonely stretch of highway. NCL's official reason for the ban is that other people will think you have a cigarette. Which I find hilarious because the two people who vape in my office next to me all day - in California, no less - have devices that resemble cell phones with mouthpieces. I had to ask what the heck they were (I was thinking breathalyzers or an app that detected if you had halitosis).
