Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

Yep...Just like smokers and e-cig users don't owe the business one dime of our money. God forbid a compromise could be reached based on current available science of e-cig vapor being harmless when used outdoors

the problem is the 'current available science' is not always the best. The current available science on cigarettes in the 30's said that it was fun and safe and not a problem to smoke.... the the future science happened.

Current science said asbestos was safe at one point in time... current science is not a good thing to always rely on

Just use your ecig in the cabin. Nobody will know.

After reading your statement it reminded me of a funny situation we had in our cabin on the Gem back in March. There were 6 of us playing cards and our friend was using his e-cig. It's so normal for him to use it, that none of us realized it till the alarm went off...then it became reality! First the phone call stating that security was on its way and then the door bell rang. They truly wanted to make sure there wasn't a real fire. Since this my my cabin I was concerned. They arrived and our friend apologized repeatedly and said he made an honest mistake. Security was awesome. They explained that the steam from bathroom showers can set off the alarm also. He called it in and explained that it was the shower, smiled, and let us continue playing cards. BTW...a great cruise.

I do not want to seem sarcastic or combative, but I have to ask: would you have this same attitude if we were talking about something unrelated to cigarettes?

Current science is all we have. If we say we will not do or recognize something because future science may show that current science is wrong, then how can we do ANYTHING?

It seems to me that some of you are exhibiting exceptionally fear based thinking; kind of like looking at a bowl of soup, smelling it and stirring it around, checking up on the chef and the kitchen, but still refusing to eat because there still just might be some bacteria in there - I mean until there is a complete GCMS test of the soup's ingredients, how can you be sure?

This sounds like a good way to get Sheehan to update his "spamblocker list" !!
Or to fill his mailbox so full that the opposite side can't send emails.

BTW, I think once is enough, it gets your point across. More than one, makes one question your motives.

Seriously folks, the current science regarding vapor devices is pretty clear - the only thing scientists are reluctant to talk about is long term effects, mostly because there has yet to be a long term to study.

Thank you for making this very clear, because this is what people are concerned with. Edited by NLH Arizona

This thread absolutely intrigues me. Here in Aus we always think the US are so ahead, but here with the smoking issue you are so behind. Smoking has been banned in public places, casinos for ages. No business has been lost because the majority of non smokers returned and guess what- the smokers who were not going to come anymore, did come back. Businesses worried, but no revenue was lost. As a country we had to address the issue do to a worker with lung cancer suing an employee. So it is also a health and safety issue. Employees have to work in smoke free environments. Cruise ships haven't had smoking on balconies since at least 2009, unsure of beginning date, but I did do a cruise around then and that was the norm. Nobody worries about whether people will follow the law/rule or not we just do it. It is accepted. After all why allow for the minority with an addiction that impinges on the majority. E cigs are not allowed here as they have not been proven safe. And coming from a region that does not have them I can definitely smell them when I've travelled in Europe. So I wouldn't be balcony snooping, my nose would have sussed them out. So I guess with the smoking issue we are ahead! I do feel sorry for smokers though because in so many ways your addiction impacts on your lifestyle and it can't be easy to give up something you've done for so long. I know I would not get to travel so extensively if I smoked as long flights would be so hard.

It's because our gov't makes money from the tax on cigs. It will never be banned 100%.

This is kinda tough to argue with! I know many smokers feel like they are being picked on; I know I did for the decades that I smoked. But the facts do have to be faced, smoking causes a multitude of diseases first hand and second hand (third hand is also being explored) with no upside or benefit of any kind.

And there in lies the difference. The Australians tax their residents in so many other ways that they don't really need the tax from smokes. Can't wait to try a $10 Big Mac or pay $8 a gallon for gas when I visit in 2016. :(

One correction, some Aussies still smoke and their cigarettes go for about $20 a pack so I guess they still do rely some on the few smokers that are left!

Ferris Buller... ya'll still here??? Go Home...LOL - I'm in Atlanta - I really wonder what folks on this thread would say about the Ebola patient just flown in... that to me is worth at least 5 mins of honest debate in a different forum - e-cigs safety on a balcony - not so much... just saying

I'm very happy to report that hubby is okay w/ the new parodym (sic) on only e-cigs on the balcony... it was touch and go as he had the typical knee-jerk reaction... we'll see what comes but I just can't believe that folks spending 10-15k on a suite would spend time to 'peek' over to see what we are doing (no flavor/smell assumed)... seriously I hope folks have better things to do on a cruise than worry about what we are doing... and if NCL has an issue because of a busy body - well... that would be our cue to move on.. I'm hoping not though - they have such a well balanced product - we will take our chances... and accept how it goes...

We actually have friends bugging us to go back to Princess right now for an April cruise... we dearly love them and it will be interesting to see how New Year's Eve goes - we are fun people - truly whatever 'side' you are on - wish us luck - I'd love to debate something less contentious about NCL in the future with anyone of you - :p

I don't normally post and am not really interested in getting into this silly debate, but have read it with amusement and interest.

But this information is not completely correct. There have been a lot of small businesses close because of Canada's smoking rules and a lot of businesses hurt by them.

BTW in all of these pages of debate, I really haven't seen one poster who has been swayed to think differently that what they did prior to reading an alternate point of view.

Carry on

You said it all in one line......why allow the minority with an addiction to impinge on the majority!!!!
