gazza48 Posted July 26, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 26, 2014 Hi all...we are staying in private airbnb in Rome near the Termini and just wondering the best transport option to get to our cruise ship. There are trains we know but reading up, it seems a bit chaotic but certainly cheap option. Any one done it??? Private vehicle is 130euro... Need the same thing on the reverse as we are heading to Venice from Rome after the cruise.. thanks Gail

Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted July 27, 2014 #3 Share Posted July 27, 2014 (edited) Italian trains are fine as long as you don't have too much luggage as you have to take your luggage into the carriage with you. Travel First Class if you can. The trains are very comfortable and quick. However beware of gypsies working the train - make sure your luggage is near where you are sitting and keep a close eye on it. We travelled Paris-Venice, Venice-Florence, Florence-Pisa, Arezzo-Naples, Naples -Rome, and Rome-Zurich via Milan all by train with two roller suitcases, two overnight bags which fitted on top of the rollers and hand luggage. gazza48 Posted July 27, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted July 27, 2014 thank you....we are travelling with back packs and have a wrap around that cannot be tampered with! We have noticed a lot of warnings about travel in Italy.. Gail:)
Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted July 27, 2014 #5 Share Posted July 27, 2014 You should be fine. Just be aware of who is around you at the stations and of people walking through the carriages or standing in the entrance area of carriages. We didn't have any problems but heard first-hand stories of people who did. We found the trains were a very efficent way of getting around Italy. Not quite as much fun as driving at 140kph on the Autostrada but a lot safer ;)

maryann ns Posted July 27, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 27, 2014 The train is really straightforward and easy as long as you can carry your luggage. The money saved will buy a great meal or two somewhere. Allow plenty of time in Rome to get to the right track area but be aware they do not post the exact track until close to boarding time. Check out a site called ron in rome and also go to youtube where you should find videos which make it all clear.
N&PJ Posted July 27, 2014 #8 Share Posted July 27, 2014 The train is a great option, especially if you pre-book an Intercity express from Roma Termini to Civitaveccia. You can book on line at the Trenitalia web-site and for a couple extra Euros you can travel 1st Class with guaranteed seats and plenty of space for you and your luggage. We did the journey one month ago and the price for two was 22 Euros.
138east Posted July 27, 2014 #9 Share Posted July 27, 2014 The train from Rome to Civitavecchia is a great option, but you really have to be able to manage your luggage. I did it by myself in November. Allow plenty of time. Buy your tickets ahead if you can. As soon as they post the track number, head for the gate, which is a long long walk. Don't forget to validate your ticket. If you do some research, you can find out the general track numbers that the train will leave from and get yourselves out to that area ahead of time so you get your pick of seats. I did unreserved on the cheapest train and paid 5-6€ to go around 10:30 am. Ignore anyone who tries to help with your luggage - these are the gypsies. At Civitavecchia you will have to carry your luggage down a flight of stairs to cross under the tracks and go up a flight of stairs on the other side. The port entrance for the shuttle bus is walkable. It was a nice leisurely stroll along the seafront promenade to the shuttle bus out to the ship. Nebr.cruiser Posted July 27, 2014 #10 Share Posted July 27, 2014 We've done the opposite, Citivecchia to Rome on the train. We had 24" suitcases and a small tote each, walked from the port to the station and then from Termini to our B&B. We were 65 and had no major problems, except, of course, it would have been nice to have smaller luggage. You do have to have good mobility and enough strength to haul your luggage around. There are a couple of flights of stairs. Be sure to validate the tickets. Our train was extremely crowded and we had to stand with our luggage in the area between cars for a while until seats opened up. We'd do it again if we get back to Rome. Eileen G Posted July 27, 2014 #11 Share Posted July 27, 2014 We have done this several times. As long as you take a local train that ends in Civi you will have no trouble. These are commuter trains that are crowded during rush hour but not late morning to early afternoon. Usually the train will be waiting when you get there. Walk to the end of the train and you will have plenty of room for you and your luggage. The nice thing about taking a train that ends in Civi is you know where to get off and have plenty of time. Also you may not have to go down the stairs to go under the tracks. We take the train that leaves around 12:30 and give ourselves plenty of time. The train station is very interesting so try to stop by the day before you are leaving to have a look around and buy your ticket. it's a lot easier to find your way around without luggage so you know where you are going. FTLcruisers Posted July 27, 2014 #12 Share Posted July 27, 2014 Join the roll call for your cruise and contact people staying near you in Rome - if you share a 6 or 8 person van, you will have an easy, comfortable and reasonably priced transfer. We used RomeCabs and the van for 6 of us was 190 euros - I made the arrangements and got 4 others from the roll call to join us. There was no extra charge for picking the 3 couples up from different hotels. Marianne
