LiseD Posted August 15, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2014 Thanks for all your help. We are putting a deposit on the Avalon cruise-(see earlier post) Sept 2015 on the Rhine. To be honest it came down to the fact that we only had to put a $250 pp deposit down and balance due next June!! We just paid twins fall college tuitions, so this sounded pretty good to us!!! :) Can't think of a better way to spend our 25th anniversary! You can bet I will be posting a lot more questions!!! Ship's Wake Posted August 15, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 15, 2014 Congratulations! You were faced with a no lose situation - both options were excellent. Glad you're booked and counting down the days already. :)
maxiesgrandma Posted August 15, 2014 #3 Share Posted August 15, 2014 We too did a lot of research for our May 2015 Grand European river cruise, and chose Avalon as well. We loved the configuration of the stateroom - having the bed look straight out the wall of windows was a huge plus for us. Also - the fact that we did not have to pay the full price (just a small deposit) until 3 months before we go was another plus for us. May as well let the travel $$ collect a teeny bit of interest for us! This is our first river cruise and we are so very excited!!:)

Rare Got2Cruise Posted August 15, 2014 #8 Share Posted August 15, 2014 You will be able to taste different types of beers along the Rhine too. A little trivia, the Rhine used to be filthy, so in Cologne, each and every citizen was given 2 Litres of either wine or beer per day to drink because the water was too dirty. Well, all water used to be filthy and to survive, everyone drank beer or wine or other 'prepared' liquid. That's why we have "small beer" - low alcohol breakfast beer & what children (and women:rolleyes:) drank. (there are some fantastic histories of beer out there! My favorite isn't easily available these days - Beer: A History of Suds and Civilization from Mesopotamia to Microbreweries by Gregg Smith) But Prost- the story of German Beer - is fun reading prep for a European river cruise:p
