Breeze 8/10-8/16: A death, a lost kid, and a Whole Lotta People....

Recommended Posts

After my son finished high school we decided never to go on a cruise when the kids are out of school. No summer, Christmas or even long weekend cruises for us anymore.

When we went on the Splendor out of NYC is January there were something like 94 children on board. It was such a civilized cruise compared to the others we took. We are going on the Ecstasy in a few weeks, no holiday at all, out of Miami, they offered a senior rate (over 55), I am guessing very few kiddies.

You have a few years before your son gets to maturity but I will suggest doing this when he does. :D

That's just it, it isn't KIDS that bother me, it was THESE KIDS. I sailed Oasis in 2012 during Spring Break, over 2,000 kids on board, not a problem to be found. One year when Royal's Vision was still in LA, we sailed during Thanksgiving week and the ship set a record for most kids EVER on a sailing, no issues. It was THIS group of THESE kids and their rotten parents. I love kids, just not badly behaved, unsupervised ones like these.

And my older son is 18, he has cruised his entire life, he has never acted like this. I actually raise my kids and they know better. In fact, I mentioned to Ana that if my older son pulled a disappearing act like Lil Bobby did, he would have probably taken his chances with the ocean rather than having to face me.;)

That's crazy. Doesn't look like he found the bag afterall. I wonder who he was traveling with and if he thought maybe he would be in hot water if he didn't try and get that bag. Very foolish on his part. I hope he had some money or at least a credit card on him. Then again, maybe all that stuff was in the things he was going to get.

He didn't look like he had anything on him. No backpack, no bag, nothing. Just The Hat.

I'm a light sleeper too and can't go back to sleep once I'm up. I totally would have been irritated by the lost little boy announcements. And probably took on worrying about him to boot. Did you ever find out how old he was? Seriously doubt I would have made a stink about it as the ship had a duty to try and find him no matter the hour. And compensation - well good for you. I wonder if they did that for everyone? Seriously asking because a fellow passenger on our Freedom trip last week made a huge big deal of not being on the ship early since she had FTTF and they wound up giving all of us who had FTTF OBC.

I don't know his exact age, she called him a teen. As for anyone else getting money, I have no idea. I think most people don't bother to ask, or else they get all loud and crazy and get nothing. The key is taking the right approach. Ana HUGGED me as she paid me...The Mouthpiece is Supreme!

So raise your hand if I offended you??:p

You are too funny phoenixdawg. Remind me of one of my closest friends. Were you trying to offend people? Why do you care? It's your review. I can certainly understand why you took issue with the crowd. Sounds rather hideous. I probably would have called them trifling. lol. Less of a stereotypical term. But either way, some of that stuff would have bothered me too. We had 1100 kids on our Freedom cruise two weeks ago. One time a group of them were having a field day at the ice cream machine. My husband said something to them nicely and they ran off. I felt bad for the worker because he had just finished loading the cones and cleaning the entire area. I saw no parents. And these kids were between 8-10 I would say. Matter of fact my 6-year old said she knew one from the night before in her camp. Totally unacceptable. But other than that, no real issues with all those kids onboard! I sure would love to know the age of Mr. Brian who couldn't be found @ 4am!! That's crazy!

I enjoyed your review right up until you berated the GS lady for 45 minutes in order to get a few hundred dollars of OBC. You will say it could never happen to you, an emergency on a cruise ship with your child, but it can. Speaking from personal experience one of the worst things to happen in life is when there is an accident with your child or they were missing for any reason. Again, speaking from first hand experience, it is magnified while you are on vacation on a cruise ship. As a mother yourself I would have hoped that you would show compassion and be great flu for the parents that their child was safe. Congrats on exploiting someone else's nightmare to your gain.

I hear you. I didn't speak up at the boarding issue but I did take issue with a problem in my room and was compensated nicely. Yes always take the right approach. Yelling and screaming isn't unnecessary. Sometimes I feel sorry for the folks working in guest services. :(

I never try to offend people, it tends to happen all by itself, And I don't care, not at all. I just feel like I should come with a warning because I have ZERO filter.:D

I love your reviews..humor..truth....a little sass..but not mean and not unfair requests on handling things as they arise. I want to do the big bell and whistle cruise on latest Carnival and an Oasis and or Allure. Sorry the mix was a mess, but you handled it well. I am considering an off season smaller royal on a longer 12 day as a solo with less overhead for number 2 you pay for as a solo and while I love kids i am and aunt and this is my 55 cruise..the small Royal looks nice too...Sarah

You remind me of myself. My husband says we live in Lori land because strange and wondrous things happen around me. I'm a mouth as well. My boss always has me make the "difficult" calls because I can pretty much talk anybody into anything. Although I do try to use my powers for good rather than evil.

Yeah, I run my mom's law firm now, so my mouth is at professional status. Sounds like we'd get along great. I just don't understand people who DON'T speak up, we all have a mouth and shouldn't be afraid to use it.:)

Our kids are grown and hubby and I just discussed this very thing...no more cruises during school breaks and also opt for longer cruises that mean kids are less likely to be pulled out of school...something I never understood..we NEVER pulled our kids out of school for a vacation, not once, I believe school is their only real responsibility as children and I would never take it so lightly as to make them think more vacation was necessary or should be more important than their educations...yes I expect to be flamed for this one...so sorry in advance....

This is a super review.....I am leery of any ship bigger than the sunshine right now...I felt like anything bigger would be a bit too much for me......

So, after a day of water play, we went to the cabin, got cleaned up, and went searching for dinner. The buffet was an utter disappointment, so we wound up at the sushi place. They hand you a menu and a pencil (it's like The Counter if you have that burger chain near you). You check off what you want. It's priced per item. I think each roll was around $7-10.

I was happily surprised that this is good quality, authentic sushi, not the crap they used to give for free. Like Mexican Food, LA knows its sushi (I just ate some for lunch as we speak). This was pretty darn good, and affordable.:)

I had an Ebi app., and a spicy tuna roll, DH had a shrimp tempura roll, DS California roll. We all had miso soup. And DS had some sake. It came out to under $50 I believe, thank you OBC!!!

Elijah had sake?! Whoa! Can he handle it better than I can? lol

Fun review. We were on the breeze 7/27. My husband commented numerous times about food left on the floor of the elevators. Yuck! My boys ( 15 and 17) commented on how the people seemed "different" on this cruise. They couldn't explain it, they just felt it. Twice security was searching for kids throwing objects down at passengers ( once it was fruit, another time candy). They boys witnessed some fights. When we were in the Thrill Theater waiting area one night there were 3 little girls waiting. And not quite patiently. They couldn't have been more than 6 or 7. No parents. I couldn't imagine letting my kids alone that young!

When you were at Mr. Sanchos was there a lot of dance music? I was just curious if its always like that or just a special thing because apparently the qinceanera group that had been celebrating on our ship decided to take the celebration to Mr. Sanchos. The pool was way too crowded and dance music was blaring. They were having a blast. It was taking place around where you were sitting-just the other side of the pool. But it was nice to have music-and I am pretty good at tuning things like that out anyway when I need to.

I hear you about the kids.

As for Sanchos, just regular music like they would play at the ship pool, not too loud or annoying. I didn't really even think if there was any music until you asked, so it must not have been very loud. It was pretty low key there, I had a nice relaxing day.

I only cruise in the fall. The winter months are too cold (or breezy in the Caribbean) and the other months, there are too many children on board for my taste. I am not kid-friendly, at all. Hence, my cruises tend to be in the fall.

As for the OBC, I thought about it. I don't believe the initial OBC for a price drop. Carnival is pretty inflexible after final payment. That is why they have so many different promotions and so many different rules. If you were a platinium or gold (or whatever the highest level is), maybe (big maybe). But just a random passenger?? Naw buddy. . .try me again.

As for getting $300 because you were awaken by the in-room announcemnts. . . . they DO NOT pay cash for lost of sleep. The entire ship is awaken. That is the whole purpose. You may get an apology and that is it. Not even a cheap bottle of champagne.

I have been on two cruises where there was a need for early early morning in-room announcements. It awakens the entire ship. It is meant to wake everyone up. Once, after the announcement was made a few times, security started to do a cabin by cabin search for a female passenger who had "disappeared" and her husband couldn't find her. (Turns out she got drunk in the casino, went to some other man's cabin and when the announcements were made, since her new bedfellow didn't know her name, he didn't know to wake her up and tell her the entire ship was looking for her.:D:eek:). Anyone who had managed to sleep thru the announcements were awakened by security who proceeded to search each cabin, deck by deck. thoroughly. It happens. Carnival doesn't compensate for that.

Again, Naw buddy. . . tell me another.

Re: Mr. Sancho's: have you ever been to Nachi Cocum? Comparisons? One quieter than the other? Trying to decide which one is right for us next time we are in Cozumel, and have never been to either. TIA

Sorry, never been to Nachi, so I can't compare the two. I really did like Sanchos though.

Thanks for the awesome review! Really enjoyed (definitely one of the most entertaining lol) I FB friend requested you too to see pics! I am now onto read your oasis review. I am getting married next year and I am tempted to go on that for the honeymoon. Have sailed with Disney, Carnival and NCL but never RCCL. Definitely more pricey but looks enticing.

Royal should be cheaper than Disney, unless you are looking at Quantum.
