Onboard Credit

I just booked the Caribbean Princess and received a $100 per person onboard credit. Can someone please tell me what this credit can be used for, i.e. gratuities? purchases in gift shops?

Yes, it can be used for anything that would go on your onboard spending account--the automatic gratuities, anything purchased in the shops, alcoholic and other beverages that they charge for, specialty restaurants, spa treatments, shore excursions, etc. We had enough on our cruise to cover all of our spending, which was the gratuities, a coffee card, and a few drinks.

 

Make sure it shows on your Cruise Personalizer. Print out a copy just in case it doesn't show up on your account on the cruise. It should be there from the beginning. Some ships have kiosks where you can swipe your cruise card to get a printout of your spending. The credit will be on there. If you're on a ship that doesn't have those kiosks, you can get a printout at passenger services.

It is a credit to your onboard account, so it can be used for pretty much anything you purchase on board, gratuities, etc... At the end of your cruise they will give you a breakdown of your charges, per person, and you will see a $100 reduction in the overall charges, which is due to your OBC.

In the unlikely event some OBC is remaining at the end of the cruise you can get the remainder in cash.

If you are asking about casino OBC, you get a card in your cabin you bring to the cashier in the casino and they will give you the cash.

 

You can then go to the Purser's Desk and put it to your onboard account where it will offset some of the charges on the account.

What I am referring to are cruise line-awarded OBC's, shareholder OBC's and veteran OBC's. If I download casino credits to my cruise card, will they be subtracted from the previously-mentioned OBC's?

Shareholder OBC cannot be used for gratuities or casino charges, and cannot be cashed out. But I'm guessing it doesn't apply to the OP.

My shareholder OBC is always used for gratuities. It all goes into a big pool and is used for any charges against my account. They don't put it in a separate pot.

I figured as much, but they do have it specifically mentioned on the CCL shareholder benefit 2014 description: "This benefit is not transferable, cannot be exchanged for cash and, cannot be used for casino credits/charges and gratuities charged to your onboard account." So if they ever decide to enforce that...technically they could :)

Yes, you are 100% correct. It is clearly noted on both the shareholder benefit request form and the military benefit request form. I just noticed that. Wow, I guess we'll have to drink a LOT of wine on board. We'll just have to suffer through it:D.

The wording is somewhat ambiguous, but I don't think they mean the hotel charges, as I know for a fact that I use those very OBC's for those gratuities on every cruise.

Is it possible that the the gratuities referred to are tips a person would give to casino staff and other casino charges?

The onboard account system is not sophisticated enough to separate different on board charges to different types of OBC.

 

All the OBC just gets put into your on board account and it is used up when any type charges are put onto the account.

 

For example, if you "pre-pay" the auto-tip charge, it is not dedicated to the daily hotel gratuity charge. If fact, it might get all used up by Princess shore excursions you reserved which are charged to your account the first day. But the effect is the same, at the end of the cruise you will not owe any money for the daily gratuity charge.

If you go to a slot machine and download $$$ from your onboard account to your cruise card, it simply is a charge put on your onboard account. If there is any OBC (from any source) still on the account, then what you download will be subtracted from that OBC credit.

 

Example:

o Total of $300 of OBC on account from any source(s)

o First day $100 charged for a shore excursion. Remaining balance of $200 credit.

o First night daily hotel charge of $11.50 charged to your account. Remaining balance of $188.50.

o Next day put $250 on your cruise card at a slot machine. The remaining $188.50 will offset part of it. And now your on board account will show you will owe $61.50 as all the OBC has been used up for the various reasons listed in this example.

The onboard credit shows up on your account as a negative amount as items get charged the amount goes down.

 

I have use my obc for casino, and tips, and well pretty much everything.

 

One time I had $20 left and I thought oh well it was a write off but no when I went to bing out off the ship it went BONG and i had to go to the Purer's desk where they gave me $20 in cash.
