Why the hate on Sunshine?!

OK guys, I was watching some videos on YouTube of the ship and I NEED TO GO ON. It looks so awesome. I would actually rather go on her than Celebrity! One weird thing is that the buffet seems to be comprised of JiJis , Havana Bar, and Cuicina El Capitano. Is this true or is there an actual buffet?

Well, it's mostly not true, but sort of true also.

So, if you head to the rear of the ship on Lido deck, away from the Lido pool, you'd have Guys Burgers on the left, or starboard side of ship, and Blue Iguana Cantina on the right or port side. As you head back inside, the seating for the Lido Marketplace(the actual buffet) is on the port and starboard sides. Towards the rear of the ship, you get to the Lido Marketplace buffet. Further back is the deli and pizza place. And, fwiw, next to the pizza place and deli is the PYOB spots...Poor Your Own Beer..in case you didn't know.

Continue back between the deli and pizza place, theres an elevator lobby and the "entrance" to JiJi's, Havana Bar, and Cucina del Capitano. During breakfast hours, Cucina and JiJi's have omelet stations and a few other breakfast items. Havana bar serves some cuban themed breakfast items as well. We've viewed this area as like an extension of the Lido buffet. It's a nice area to sit and have breakfast...nice views out the aft windows. The couple of times we've been on Sunshine, the seating area was less crowded early in the cruise...but as folks "learn" about this area, it become more crowded during breakfast..and somewhat for lunch as well.

At lunch, JiJi's "turns into" the Mongolian Wok, and Ciucina does the lunch pasta bar. Havana bar serves cuban lunch items as well. Then at night, JiJi's and Cucina serve their for pay dinner menu items. They'll have music and other "events" at the Havana bar at night. Couple time we've been there, they did salsa dance lessons mid-morning by the Havana bar.

As I mentioned, we've done Sunshine twice, and totally enjoyed those areas of the ship....had dinner multiple times at JiJi's and Cucina....

Hopes this helps....and I didn't say stuff you may have already found out.

That sounds soo good. As I live near Tampa, I love good Cuban food. Do they have Cubans? If they do, I don't think they will be as good as the Colombia restaurant in Ybor City.

Anyways, there almost seems to be too many places to eat! For a specialty resturant dinner, would you suggest JiJis, Cucina, or Fahrenheit?

Yea I think they have Cubans at lunch....I don't think we tried them...too much other stuff to get. As for the specialty restaurants, hard to pick just one of the 3. I'm sure you know JiJi's and Cucina are only like $12.50(maybe went up) and Fahrenheit 555 $35.....but I'd not decide on price...they are

good and of course different...only thing to do is try em all!!

Yikes, we aren't going to pay $35 for a family of five! I think I would try JiJis, I have heard many rave reviews.

Cruzaholic,

We did a B2B on Destiny right in the middle of all of her mechanical problems (October 2009) and she rates up there with our best cruises ever. Sailings before and after ours had mechanical issues, but she ran fine for us albeit we also had the most calm seas for both sailings that I have ever seen; glass smooth water the ENTIRE time!

Granted she was showing her age and the public areas were quite dated, but those issues were addressed with the refurb.

We are booked on her as Sunshine for our SB cruise next year and may book her for next summer as well.

Paul, if you are going to throw facts into bashing rumors then what will we have to talk about here? ;) We will be on the Sunshine in 8/8/15. Let me know when you decide and what week.

As for a personal preference, we still like the Fantasy class ships. We love the open air dining area behind the Lido buffet, and all the other places where you can curl up with a book or people watch. These ships can seem crowded, too, but there seemed to be more areas to just chill.

That open air dining area is one of my most favorite spots on the ship. I spend time there even when I'm not eating.

As for how crowded the ship seems.....the only time I ever felt crowded on the Fantasy was in the hallway around the casino area on Halloween night last year. There was just a lot going on there for a few hours. Not complaining, the activities were fun & the costumes were great, just crowded as would be expected. And yes, I agree that there seems to be a lot of places on board to just chill.

I'm on the Fantasy next summer and I'm a bit scared as she's an older ship. But, I'm just going to go in with a determination to make the most of every second.

Not to worry, a lot of people are hesitant at first of checking out the Fantasy, mostly due to it's size. For many people that are willing to give her a shot, they find that the Fantasy is their favorite ship. I have to say that I was one of these people. I wanted to stay with the newer, bigger ships, but proximity to port & price finally persuaded me to book with her. I don't have a single favorite ship, but the Fantasy is one of the top 2 for me.

Even if she does not end up on your "better ships" list, I'm sure with your attitude, you will have a great time. Enjoy! :)

  • 2 weeks later...
We were on Deck 6 in one of the Premium Vista Balconies. It was wonderful. Hope you have as good of a vacation as we did.

We loved our Premium Vista Balcony! I think maybe we are spoiled now though. Lol.
