Is there any reason why I can't bring a 750ML bottle of Beer as my allowance?

Why can it only be wine or champagne? I understand they don't want hard liquor. For those who like beer (and not wine), there are some high quality beers that range from $10 - $25 for special occasions that are 750ML. ABV is similar to what a wine would be - from 8 - 12%. They often have a cork as well.

Any reason why this wouldn't be permitted?

Allowing a bottle of wine or champagne is a holdover from the past. A lot of guests are celebrating a wedding, anniversary, etc or foodies wanting a specific wine with their dinner. There are too many wines for any ship to stock them all. This rule allows guests to bring a bottle of wine or champagne that is "special" to them (like a specific vintage) and not available on the ship. Of course, the rule is generic enough that you can bring on a bottle that IS available on the ship or something cheap like Two-Buck Chuck, but the original intent was to accommodate guests wanting a specific wine.

Here are some of the 'wines' I looked at today. My buddy suggested Tank 7. I snapped a few pictures to come home to research and narrow it down since they are a little too expensive to try a bunch of them.

My choice would be in the third picture, the second one from the right hand side. NAKED NUN. Gives me chills just thinking about those Immaculate Heart Sisters from grade school. LOL.

It is Carnival' ship and their rules. I am sure the reason they allow wine is because a few people pay the corkage fee to offset the revenue lost. But honestly they do not check the bottles closely, I see folks on every cruise that put booze in their wine bottles.

You can bring 12 packs of beer on so I don't know why you can't bring a bottle???

Saw several people carrying on 12 packs of Bud Light, Coors Light just a few weeks ago at the pier in NY (Splendor)..in plain sight. They were right ahead of me at check in. No one said a word.

There were some others with a case of Snapple, water, and energy drinks.

Because Carnival wants you to buy their beer on board their ship. This is how they make a profit. They don't care about you desiring a specific high quality beer although I'm sure they may offer some specialty beers for purchase. The only reason they still allow wine and champagne as these have been traditional Bon voyage/special occasion gifts and two bottles aren't going to eat into their profits. It's their ships and their rules and most major cruise lines don't consider beer special occasion. Now, you might try to carry on a six-pack and get away with it; but no guarantees.

On our September 6th. cruise on the Freedom I brought three 6 packs of beer on board at two of the ports. One at San Juan & two at St. Thomas. I just put them in my wifes zippered tote bag and nothing was said. I like Bud but it could have been any beer. I did not bring it on necessarily because of the 6.61 cost per bottle on the ship but because I like to sit on my balcony and have a few beers when I feel like it. Incidentally the Fun Times specifically says all LIQUOR will be confiscated if brought on board. Nothing about beer.

the FunTimes might say Liquor but the website says alcohol

Liquor and Beverage Policy

Bringing Alcohol On Board - Embarkation Day:

Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board. However, at the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day, guests (21 years of age and older) may bring on board one bottle (750ml) of wine or champagne, per person, only in their carry-on luggage. A $10 corkage fee per bottle will be charged should you wish to consume this wine in the main dining room; $14 corkage fee per bottle in the steakhouse. Guests may bring a small quantity (package of 12 per person) of non-alcoholic beverages. All prohibited alcohol, excessive quantities of wine/champagne or non-alcoholic beverages will be removed and stored for safekeeping until the end of the voyage. The retained item(s) will be delivered to your stateroom on the last night of the cruise. Unsealed containers with prohibited liquids will be discarded, as well as any unclaimed items left after the voyage, and no compensation will be given in either case.

they might have gotten away with it with some very lax screeners but you CANT bring beer on board. You can try to smuggle it or even walk on in plain view but its still against the rules.

This is interesting. I've read that a standard bottlecap will fit a champagne bottle. In theory, you could fill a champagne bottle with another alcohol, bottle it, and replace the muselet/cork in some way so it doesn't look too suspicious (cut off the cork or something).

I do a little home brewing so I've got the equipment to put on bottle caps. I may have to do a little testing...

I went to Immaculate Heart for elementary school as well though presumably not the same one. Such a thought gives me chills too... But not good chills, more like run screaming chills. And these weren't even knuckle rapping sisters, generally good/kind ladies but also mostly octogenarians...

I really think you either imagined those 12 packs of beer, or there were no screeners awake that day.

Oh no...I saw it and I thought to myself ..."I thought you couldn't take beer on." I never said anything but they were right in front of me when they put it on the belt at check through.

I did see some other people drinking 12 oz Coors Light cans that same day. I know the ship only sells the 16 oz aluminum bottles so I guess there were others that got them on too.

I do drink beer but I travel with a carryon only so I would never haul my own beers on, whether they are allowed or not!

Cheers works for me!!!

Yes I know what the website says about alcohol, however I was just pointing out what Funtimes says. Also this was our 36th cruise and I have always brought beer on in closed bag at port stops and have never had it taken. This includes our last 2 cruises on Carnival along with RCCL, Celebrity, NCL, Holland America, Princess Commodore and Costa. Also I have never tried to bring alcohol or beer on at any time during embarkation at first of cruise. I know there is always a first time that it might be confiscated but so be it.

Okay, I'll see if I can't pursue requesting making this change. I think the policy is a little outdated. It could be because there hasn't been enough demand. I think the demand will only be increasing.

I understand I can't because of "policy" but I want to know the reason why their policy is only for wine or champagne.

Until they start selling those larger bottles of beer on the ships like they do wine, its a shame to have a policy that probably just hasn't been reviewed in recent years now that there are more craft beer options than ever.

I agree. The policy is simply outdated. It was probably drafted to satisfy couples on romantic trips (honeymoon or anniversary). If the cruise line had it's way there wouldn't be any alcohol allowed at all.

  • 2 weeks later...

My Tank 7 just got taken by security in Galveston. They had everyone with wine go to a table to get checked out and they made sure the style of your wine was on their list. I could have hidden it away but I was carrying it in our typical wine carrier. Oh well.

Since it looks enough like wine, you will probably get it on just fine, but even if they take it from you, they will give it back at the end of the cruise since it will be in its original container & unopened. Seems like you have nothing to lose by trying. :)

I've purchased beer in port & had to turn it in, but then again, it was in bottles. Just curious, was yours in cans? However, since I usually drive to port, I don't have to worry about what I am bringing back home. I always bring home a case of beer from Belize & Roatan. Obviously I have to turn that in, but it's great to have it when I get back home. :) I always get looks & comments by envious people when I'm getting back on board.

Wow, I had no idea they had to approve of your wine type. I've never had that happen. Maybe it's because you were leaving from Galveston. Texas has some different laws when it comes to taking beer/wine/alcohol in & out of port.

They were shaking water bottles making sure they weren't booze and checking cans, etc. We just had the wine and the Tank 7. They were being extremely thorough.

They were doing the same at port of Baltimore last time we went through. Even checking the soda and water seal rings.
